With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility [and a Learning Curve]

NetSuite ERP

We use NetSuite mainly for managing and reporting on leads, prospects and customers through the lifecycle. Integrated with marketing automation it is the record of truth for our inbound/outbound marketing activities. Also use it for purchase orders and sales transactions as well as pipeline tracking and forecasting. Also used for task and case management in parts of the organization.
  • High degree of customization ability (fields, forms, etc.)
  • Powerful [saved] search capabilities once past learning curve
  • SuiteFlow provides graphical workflows to add functionality
Cons
  • While I like the customization and workflow capabilities, part of that is because we needed them to make NetSuite work well in our environment.
  • Help system is extensive, but not very easy to glean practical advice from which means much trial and error to get the needed results.
  • Not many third-party software providers (for marketing automation, quotes, etc.) integrate well with NetSuite.
  • When things don't work as expected, it can be very difficult and time-consuming to troubleshoot and fix.
If you need/want to be able to customize your CRM quite a bit, NetSuite can be a powerful tool as long as you invest the time and/or the resources into outside help to get over the learning curve. While it has internal marketing automation capabilities, they are not the most intuitive, easy nor WYSIWYG so using an external Marketing Automation (MA) tool is recommended. Caveat is that many external providers do not integrate well/at all with NetSuite which limits options.

NetSuite in a small e-commerce company

We use NetSuite in several capacities across our entire organization, specifically for our ERP system, our CRM and also for our e-commerce website which is hosted on an older e-commerce tool called Site Builder. NetSuite is used by virtually everyone in our organization. We are a distributor of products, primarily drop shipped from manufacturers to the customer, but we also maintain some inventory. So, NetSuite handles e-commerce, order processing, inventory management, accounting and some marketing.
  • The fully integrated aspect of NetSuite is really what makes it an effective tool for us.
  • Having the entire order process accessible by everyone has equipped us to be able to help customers in a way that differentiates us from our competitors. Anyone on our sales or customer service team has the entire customer record available to them, enabling them to address customer issues quickly.
  • NetSuite's high level of customization is it's best strength as well as it's biggest hurdle. We've significantly customized NetSuite with workflows and automation around customer communication and supply chain management.
Cons
  • We are using an older version of the e-commerce platform and it is not particularly user friendly. However, the pricing model & implementation process for NetSuite can be cost prohibitive for small businesses to upgrade.
  • The high level of customization requires a lot of maintenance and a very specific skillset, so it has been difficult for us to find developers that can help us with maintenance and improvement on a cost effective basis. NetSuite customization is not for the faint of heart, but it's super powerful.
  • The overall pricing model can be cost prohibitive, especially for smaller organizations that don't have an exceptionally sophisticated business model.
  • Support is cumbersome and not particularly user friendly for non-technical business people.
For manufacturing and distribution business, NetSuite is a very capable and robust system. For e-commerce, I think that the ideal customer is some company with substantial volume from multiple vendors/sources. For a company to effectively use NetSuite, there needs to be an element of size and complexity to make the investment, customization and learning curve worthwhile. For a sophisticated business though, NetSuite can be a fully integrated solution for the entire business so you don't need separate accounting, operations, HR and marketing applications. It can pretty much handle everything.

New to NetSuite. Still learning

Finance team uses as accounting system and also use the fixed asset management and will be using the inventory module soon
  • Prepaids
  • Controls
Cons
  • Connections with banks - Goldman sachs
  • saves reports
  • searching for transactions
Its an upgrade overall from our old system since it has controls in place but it is also more tedious and a little less efficient when it comes to posting entries in general

NetSuite ERP

Fionic is a financial services company and uses NetSuite as its financial book of records. It is used for financial reporting and cash collections.
  • Flexibility of financial reporting process.
  • Vast infrastructure to support various needs.
  • Able to scale to a much larger organization dealing with multiple jurisdictions.
Cons
  • Learning curve to start functioning efficiently.
  • Ability to easily connect with Canadian banks and the application of cash to a large number of customer receivables.
  • Support for multi-currency reporting/implementation.
NetSuite is an investment into the finance/accounting department. When the company is large and the finance/accounting department, there is additional room for efficiencies, which can be had with the deployment of NetSuite. The implementation process and learning curve are also an investment, and it takes time to understand the best way to develop processes.
