We selected New Relic since it was very dynamic and versatile to use. It works well in all aspects of monitoring, and observability and would allow having a focus on collaboration with different repeatable processes. Also, New Relic has a good focus on working well with CLI, UI, and API types of work.

We used Datadog for a few years, then moved to Splunk for a few more years, and now [we've been with] New Relic for the past year or so. Our main incentive to switch to New Relic was Splunk's increase of stability/unavailability issues + the increase of the monthly/yearly pricing model.

We use other products within the organization but New Relic gives a broader coverage of the full stack. While all have their niche advantages over each other. New Relic has the broadest capability set that is more accessible, not only to engineers but to other non-technical teams and it is with that that it has a true competitive advantage.

New Relic is easier to login and use as it's user friendly, its full-stack capacity lets us to monitor the whole system across all the tiers. However compared to Dynatrace its deep-dive analysis capacity needs to be improved, compared to Splunk its log analysis and reporting capacity needs to be improved.

Our organisation uses PaperTrail for logging purposes. New Relic captures system logs or errors but it's not great [at] capturing an end to end cycle of an operation. PT works great in those types of cases.

For front-end applications we compared New Relic with Sentry, the most pro of [New Relic] is the capability the merge data from back-end applications, having a clear view of all the context. Another way, the Sentry is focused only on front-end applications and is not able to have this big picture of the context.

New Relic is great

New Relic feels like the gold-plated version of many of the other monitoring tools. It has such a wide array of features, and falls into the category of extremely reliable, making it a solid choice. One pitfall of many tools that are swiss army knives is that they usually are not great at everything. With New Relic that argument falls dead. New Relic seems to do everything very well and the ease of it all being in one platform makes for smooth sailing.

Sometimes I feel that the New Relic comprises all the features from the tools which I mentioned above like monitoring infra, logs, and setting alarms and alerts.

All the tools mentioned above are pretty much the same in terms of their capabilities for monitoring, reporting, and alerting. Uniqueness in New relic comes from its out-of-the-box functionality to provide visibility into every aspect of application performance and time to build it. Also, the pricing is not less than SolarWinds but much better than other products.

New Relic is competing neck to neck with other APM products in terms of capability, ease of doing business, implementation and configuration, prices, integrations, and future developments. No doubt New Relic is providing out of the box solution for business services monitoring but more importantly enablement of the end-user customers and support is also much better.

All of these apps have pros and cons. AppDynamics is very powerful and provides excellent reporting and deep dives on performance. Tableau Desktop's setup can be a bit tedious, but once it is done, it is a great tool to provide visual performance reports. However, the lack of alerting puts it below New Relic.

My background before using NR was with Java enterprise systems. Cloudwatch has recently been mentioned by OPs to be a tool to consider.
