New Relic can be the one-stop solution when trying to monitor apps that have been migrated from on-premises to the cloud. The broad range of Rest API options will help to create alert policies for the monitors that can now be discovered or connected via their OOTB cloud integrations. Cost is usually based on the amount of data consumed which can be easily tracked from the Usage page.

Because the organization that uses New Relic never had an on-prem installation, I can't comment on this particular question outside of the cost aspect. New Relic's APM seems to be very competitively priced and utilizing it has freed up engineering and product management resources to take on other tasks because identifying issues is very easy.

New Relic helped in linking our applications with Kubernetes and to get Kubernetes metadata and bring it with distributed traces. These issues helped in identifying performance issues that tie into billing and helped us be more efficient around reduced cost. We can work with the deployment of this in New Relic via editing a YAML file and updating our configuration after.

Our product is already in the cloud, so I can't say that New Relic accelerated cloud adoption. It can surely help when this is the case though. Regarding the cost or ROI - I can't really tell since I'm only a "regular user" of the app and wasn't involved in the budget aspect of it. I can definitely say we invest a lot of time in customizing our logs and New Relic in order for it to work smoothly.

New Relic has helped reduce migration risk by being able to capture and compare before and after behaviors and performance to migrated systems. Historical data provided over time with New Relic allows benchmarking for migration and allows migration risks to be addressed before go-live. New Relic reduces revenue risk and downtime, real-time data post releases combined with historical benchmarking allows for issue identification before it becomes revenue limiting.

On a daily basis, we can track different KPIs about our web application and its architecture. We use it on our different testing platforms, and the earlier we detect performance issues, the more time we save to fix them (and therefore money).

New Relic experience

We do not have any migration experience from on-prem to the cloud, but we do have the experience of New Relic helping us to accelerate the implementation of our newly multi-cloud system. We do not need to learn or create a new monitoring system in the newly integrated cloud platform, but we are just using the New Relic as the way to go.

Moving fully to the cloud actually made us less reliant on New Relic, as a lot of out-of-the-box support usually comes when adopting a cloud-native approach. Also, to gain the most value, you'd need to run New Relic in all your layers, ranging from load balancers to databases and in-between.

In terms of reducing the risk of migration we can say that the basic charts of [New Relic] can say a lot if the migration went well, we recently migrated all our apps from EC2 to ECS structure, and [New Relic] was the keystone to insure that every still working fine. Talking about cost reduction, with NR we can clearly see when some app could be downscale.

Instrumentation is simple for New Relic. Many important metrics come out of the box so our engineers spend minimum effort in doing so. This means it free us the resources needed so we can allocate more effort to pursue other projects. We also monitor the metric that New Relic captures when we migrate from on-prem to the cloud environment or migrate the system between different hosts. This helps us to identify any anomaly after migration quickly

With the New Relic alert feature, we are able to catch any performance and quality issues and solve them quickly from the metrics, so the time we spend on troubleshooting and service downtime is definitely reduced at least 20%. We feel confident when we see various metrics looking good/healthy in New Relic, so we are able to deploy to Production.

The department of the company that I work in has always been cloud so there has been no migration for us but it has definitely helped to reduce costs when you talk about business costs and brand trust. New Relic gives us visibility and responsiveness so that we can respond to incidents quickly and before problems escalate into greater problems.

We use New Relic for both our on-prem and cloud environments for monitoring and creating alerts. I don't see a big difference in the costs. But, monitoring helps us to avoid migration risk by comparing stats and metrics against on-prem.

This is the benefit of every SAAS-based tool, not just New Relic that they help organizations to focus on application development rather than spending time in fixing the application supporting infrastructures such as servers, storage, databases, and application scaling. Similarly, with the use of New Relic in our organization we focus on application performance improvement with no worry of New Relic scalability.

New Relic dependency mapping of the application component is it Servers (Physical, Virtual, or containerized) allows us to visualize what could be the impact on the application if the respective individual components fail this capability makes migration planning and execution easier from on-premises to the cloud. Another benefit of using the new Relic is visibility into cloud services' health and scalability.

New Relic keeps us confident in our releases and gives us the ability to quickly catch a regression and act on it. New Relic is definitely a big help regarding cloud adoption since you can test and compare performance before and after a migration.
