K2 was not my decision, but it was more robust than the other solutions. It just required a much higher learning curve to use it effectively. I liked the ease of use of Infowise and Nintex, but it was lacking some things K2 had. SP Designer is the easiest and most familiar to me, so I'm most comfortable with using it.

What previously stood K2 apart from Nintex was purely the ability to have workflows executed outside of SharePoint. Nintex are due to release a product that resides in Azure that provides this feature as well. K2 should really look into redesigning the development GUIs they are not good at all, and perhaps look at providing a cloud solution to mitigate the risk of clients having to maintain hardware as well as their workflow solutions.

When we brought K2 Blackpearl into the organization 5/6 years ago, it was brought in for a larger, enterprise build. Because of the scale of the program (3-4 year investment initially in 2010), it was important to invest in a product that not only met the needs of a specific business segment, it was important to understand a longer term strategy of the product's use within the organization. Given we have multiple BPM products within the organization providing different solutions to similar problems, the other products are used in specific business segments. The intent of K2 Blackpearl was to become a candidate product for use via our BPM Center of Excellence committee. Since 2010, it still stands up against various candidates such as Lombardi and IBM BPM and is the only Microsoft-based BPMS we have. I think, if you have a staff of .NET gurus and a business partner mature enough to understand the benefits of a BPM product, I would definitely chose K2 Blackpearl again.

SharePoint workflow is very tightly integrated with SharePoint platform and does not allow external system interfaces easily. The activity library provided by SharePoint workflow (Windows workflow) is not abstracted to high level scenarios such as (upload document, create AD user etc) so the developer has to program from ground up. SharePoint based workflow and WF does not provide robust error management (such as retry, redirect to error queue, resume) and lacks solid versioning ability.
Nintex Workflow also is very tightly integrated with SharePoint and lacks integration ability to external LOB in the enterprise.

Nintex was pitched to us as not really doing much more than InfoPath. Probably a bad selling day for Nintex but we were left with a less than desirable taste in our mouths. We knew we liked K2 more anyway because of the independence from SharePoint as well as already being familiar with it.

More robust but more complex than Nintex, which installs directly on the SharePoint servers. At the time we were looking, Nintex was not a viable player. Another advantage of K2 is that there are books and a good user community. We initially tried SharePoint workflow but it was very clear that it was too primitive and inflexible a tool to do what we needed.

K2 came to the top after very thorough evaluation. We evaluated for the ease of use, business friendliness, technical feature set, vendor viability and prior track records with similar customers, innovativeness, analyst rankings, implementation costs including licensing, labor and training, historical alignment with market trends, and the sentiment of existing customers. Features like advanced reporting and the ease to modify applications by our business were highly sought.

We had a department dedicated to process improvement, but no platform to enforce process regularity or accurately monitor process execution. K2 blackpearl was chosen because it provided the tools to execute, monitor, measure, and improve processes.

We found SharePoint's built-in process tools clumsy, hard to re-use, and not very powerful or flexible.

K2 blackpearl's ability to integrate with SAP, Salesforce, SharePoint, and other platforms that were already in use around the company was another strong point.

K2 delivers much more efficient enterprise level solutions to our organization. The K2 workflow engine and forms tools are superior to Nintex in what they can deliver. Nintex however, was much easier to learn and the team got up and running much more quickly using Nintex. Heave use of Nintex eventually slowed down out SharePoint farm due to resiging and running on the web front end servers. This caused us to migrate to K2 where we could develop more robust workflows that did not have a negative impact on our SharePoint farm.

1) Nintex Worklows for SharePoint: This product is integrates with SharePoint really well. Also it is less expensive. Developers/Power users doesn't have to leave SharePoint to develop the workflows.
2) SharePoint workflows : Most of the cases we are able to address the business requirements using SharePoint workflows.
