Cloud storage helps you and your team keep your sanity in a modern working environment. Even if your company is 100% in-office, cloud storage can provide backup and recovery options as well. You can also benefit from being able to access your projects or documents while traveling.

One cloud storage solution that is especially well suited for the office is Microsoft Office OneDrive. OneDrive is a cloud storage service that has fantastic functionality and ease of use for sharing. Here is a tutorial for Microsoft OneDrive and it’s features.

How much is OneDrive?

OneDrive can be accessed for offline online storage using a Windows, Apple, or Linux operating system (OS). If you need to work offline you can and then when you’re back online your files sync automatically. You can also store private key files on your device by using the on-demand feature. You can use OneDrive to share files with their mobile app with any mobile device including Android, or iPhone.

OneDrive allows you to secure important files, upload large file sizes, and use their famously powerful office apps in some plans. We briefly go over both OneDrive for home and OneDrive for business subscriptions.

The plans can benefit your company in different ways. OneDrive Family plan comes with added protections like the Personal Vault and Ransomware detection and recovery to protect a family’s personal finances.

The business subscription users need to pay for Personal Vault separately, but instead have encryption, backup, and data retention. If you’re a small startup or have personal documents you need to protect, look at OneDrive’s personal options.

OneDrive offers one month free for the Microsoft 365 Family,Microsoft 365 business Basic, and Microsoft 365 Business Standard business subscriptions. Not all plans will have a month to month option without an annual commitment, which is noted on the tables below.

Microsoft 365 refers to a suite of Microsoft Office Apps. Any plan in home or business that says Microsoft 365 will come with Microsoft apps like Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Word. Only the Microsoft 365 business plans include Sharepoint, Exchange, and Teams.

The kind of features personal OneDrive plans come with include: files on demand, file sharing, real-time collaboration, offline files, and anywhere editing. This plan is ideal for families and individuals that may have a lot of pictures, family documents (like ancestry searches), financial documents, and personal projects.

The home plans aren’t reserved for non commercial use, you can use them for your side business or startup. You should know it might be better for future growth to switch to a business plan.

If you only need OneDrive itself, then OneDrive standalone in home subscriptions is a better deal than in business. The difference is that the OneDrive Standalone plan is 100GB while business is a whopping 1 TB. If you don’t need a whole terabyte or don’t have a team of employees, go with the home plan.

The OneDrive business plan comes with the ability to upload 100 GB file sizes, and 1 TB in storage, or unlimited storage for OneDrive Business Plan 2, and built in productively and collaboration tools. This set of subscriptions is made to be affordable to small, midsize, and large enterprises with multiple authorized users.

The big assumption behind these plans is that you need them to collaborate and share with other employees or users. The personal use plans might be better for businesses run by a lone wolf that doesn’t need collaboration or Microsoft 365.

You may feel like these prices or storage features just aren’t enough. There is one great storage provider that’s very similar to Microsoft, but does have larger storage capabilities.

Alternatives

One of the biggest competitors for OneDrive has to be Google Drive (or G Drive). When you compare them it's like apples and oranges, one is not innately better than the other. They each have similar capabilities and bundles with office applications.

In terms of cost, their business plans only differ by one or two dollars, with Google actually being more expensive. The reason their plans are a few dollars more is they offer more storage per user. OneDrive does offer an unlimited storage plan for $10 as the perfect budget options for small businesses. It is important to note however, that Google offers an extensive free version of G drive.

Personal G drives have 30 GB of storage space and access to almost all of Google’s apps like Google Slides, Google Calendar, etc, whereas the personal free plan for OneDrive only has 5 GB. This free plan for G drive works if you are fine with separate google drive accounts for each member.
