I've been using OneDrive for nearly 5 years now in a personal capacity, back when it was called SkyDrive and had a pretty limited mindshare and marketshare.

I value OneDrive for its fantastic photo sharing and photo viewing platform which in my mind, rivals the utility of Flickr by sharing in-depth image information (EXIF), as well as using deep-learning network technologies to automatically tag the images with metadata tags indicating what the image contains.

Furthermore, OneDrive has really excellent granular privacy controls for sharing directories and files both. Using these tools, you can easily keep track of who can see what files, and who has what permissions on the files you've shared.

This enables me to share files widely with people across the internet without worrying about them having undue access to my other files stored on my OneDrive.

In addition, OneDrive is integrated into Windows 7/8/10 on the desktop, as well as being heavily integrated into Windows Phone/Windows 10 Mobile. This synergy allows me easy access to my documents, photographs, and files on the go and has proven invaluable as a means for me to share information and work on the fly without the need for portable storage.
  • EXIF Data
  • Granular privacy controls
  • Integrated across Windows/Windows Phone/Windows 10 Mobile
  • Integration with Office Suite
  • Free storage space is sufficient
  • Automatic photo metadata tagging
  • Reduction of free storage due to bad users
  • Not easily mountable as Network drive
  • Lack of Linux-native tools for mounting/management of OneDrive
  • Removal of proxy files/placeholders!
In all of my use cases, OneDrive has held up fantastically. I dislike Microsoft's recent decision to reduce the free storage (one of its great selling points) due to bad users who were over-using the "unlimited" tier.

I love using OneDrive because I am an Office 365 user and with this, 15GB of storage is allowed to be used within the subscription I have. The reason is because this is my place for using storage. I do not use Dropbox since I believe OneDrive is a much easier place to store all my documents in and it is clean and efficient and flows easily. What I mean by flow, is it can seamlessly coordinate between multiple devices such as my laptop, my phone and my tablet. It is a great way for the business because when I was a counselor at camp, we wanted all employees to be able to integrate their documents when it came to suggesting events, planning, and schedules.
  • 15GB of storage is allowed to be used if you have a subscription. This is a lot of storage for documents and is just as much as Dropbox has to offer.
  • It can seamlessly coordinate between multiple devices. This is great for when people only have a phone or a tablet and no computer nearby.
  • The ability to start a document on one computer, save it to onedrive and then pick up right where you left off on another.
  • The service itself can be better in terms of uploading the documents and photos because it can be slow at times.
  • Currently, Microsoft is removing the 15GB of storage and only bringing it down to 5GB. This should not happen.
  • File syncing is not as great as it should be and files can get overwritten when two people work on a document which can screw the format sometimes.
It is very well suited for any business or home environment because any work organization can have a use for it. Also it can be great for those at college since classes love online documents and being able to transfer the work among computers is a great use of seamlessly working on files when using OneDrive.

I use OneDrive to keep a unified storage solution across my computers. I can keep a backup of everything on my phone, and share documents between my computers flawlessly. It also helps a lot to be able to access files from my computer that are outside of the OneDrive folder in case I accidentally forget to back it up.
  • Cross-device sharing. It quickly syncs and is very useful if you use multiple devices.
  • Backing up phones. It automatically backs up every picture I take and makes it accessible on my computers.
  • Syncing. It would be useful to have a force-sync button for when you quickly need access to a file you just uploaded.
Large file storage. OneDrive requires a paid plan for large files, whereas Google Drive gives a lot more space for the free plan. Especially for students, where Google Drive gives unlimited storage, OneDrive falls behind. However, OneDrive's "entire computer access" is what caused me to like it more than Google Drive.

I use OneDrive for a nonprofit organization that is completely volunteer-based. There were 7 main people the last time I checked, plus 20 partnerships, that are mainly spread out all over the East Coast and the South.

OneDrive was a great investment for us so that we were able to share documents and information that anyone could add to or use for their presentations and cases. My role in this is promotion on social media and facilitating communication, and OneDrive was amazing so that if there was an event being hosted or an online conference, fellow head volunteers could upload summaries and pictures for me to then organize and post almost immediately.

This also cut out many communication barriers, as the majority of us are deaf or hard-of-hearing with different communication preferences (speaking, ASL, tactile ASL, etc) or other full-time jobs on top of our responsibilities that made meetings nearly impossible.
  • Real-Time Collaboration
  • Accessible anywhere with internet access
  • Password Protected
  • Great for those who learn via reading/writing things down
  • Does not translate well for our people that use screen readers.
  • Also does not translate well to Braille, or back into text. We've had issues where words would be jumbled up into gibberish.
  • Will sometimes freeze, or lag behind if more than 3 people are viewing/editing a document at once.
OneDrive is very much suited for situations where information needs to be shared and constantly updated, but access is also limited to in certain cases (such as information about cases we are working on, or future events that are being planned).

It is not that appropriate for workers who do not understand boundaries, or how to filter necessary information. We have had to remind people also how to sign out, because they would save pictures and files not related to the organization.

I personally use OneDrive for storing my research data and other data that I find to be important so that even if my hard drive fails, I won't lose the content in it. For this purpose, I have logged in to my OneDrive account from My RIT Office computer and also the laptop that I own. This way, I'm able to work at my office in the desktop as long as I want, and then I can come home and continue working on it without any extra effort. Another use I have for OneDrive is that I put files in it that I want to share. I get the link for that particular folder and send it to whoever I want to share it with.
  • Mobility: I can add and edit files any time and these get updated in the cloud instantly. This way, I don't need to remember to sync the data. I can do my job in any computer and then log off from it and continue my job in the other connected system without any effort.
  • Backup: I keep all my important files in there so that I don't have to worry about hardware failures.
  • Ease of use: Since Onedrive can be accessed similar to how local folders in computers are accessed, it is very easy to use. Once an account has been logged in to, I do not need to login again, or even open the browser.
  • Windows 7 support - The office system that I have is Windows 7 and when I use it, sometimes it doesn't sync. I don't know whether this is because it's Windows 7 or if it is a RIT network problem.
  • There should be an option to select one folder and manually sync in case the automatic sync isn't working. Once I worked on something and somehow the synchronization did not happen, so I had to create a dummy folder and delete it for the software to detect changes being made.
  • Better integration with Office 360: I have an Office 360 account and I feel that OneDrive and Office can be better integrated to make sharing and editing files easier and faster.
Some offices have Windows XP, Vista etc., installed, which might make it little but more harder to use OneDrive. Another situation is when a person has more than one account. I haven't seen any options to integrate two different accounts in the same computer. In an office space where sharing and collaborating is important, OneDrive works best in saving time.

A few users are currently using OneDrive as a way to quickly and securely access business documents that are edited both in office, at home and on the road.
  • Easily integrated into Windows
  • Provides a convenient way to access documents among PCs
  • Give ability to share documents with others
  • Great multi-platform support
  • Better previews
  • More space for cost
  • Better backup abilities
Best use is when access to documents may be needed across multiple devices whenever needed.

We currently use OneDrive, previously SharePoint across the business for both individual access to prove business documentation and also for shared documentation such as contracts, orders, proposals and meeting notes.
  • Massive amount of space, both for personal files and for our shared environment.
  • Quick and instant synchronicity.
  • Ability to access and update files from multiple devices including smartphones and tablets.
  • It took a long time to release the business 'Office 365' version and we really struggled with SharePoint, however that is in the past now.
  • Ability to play media files within the browser similar to the functionality in Dropbox.
  • I would like to see some kind of document version control; especially for marketing where by a document that is work in progress can be accessed by multiple users at the same time and have the ability to recall previous versions.
Hard to say at the moment as whilst we were waiting for SharePoint to be replaced by OneDrive we used Dropbox. We are gradually making the transition to OneDrive and so far we have not experienced any limitations.

I currently use OneDrive for multiple applications. As a photographer and designer I use OneDrive to sync projects across multiple devices. I am currently using a desktop, laptop, and Surface. To be able to work on a desktop and then immediately take my project on the road is definitely a big plus. I also work as an independent contractor teaching Epic EHR software. OneDrive allows me to work on developing curriculum while I am traveling as well as make it available for group editing. This is an invaluable tool in both positions and the syncing is flawless.
  • Device Syncing: Not only does it do a great job of syncing between Windows devices, but it does a great job between Android and iOS. The OneDrive app is built very well and even allows me to sync some of my photography projects.
  • Space Saving: Being able to choose what is actually stored on the local drive of each machine is a huge benefit. Some of the devices I use have smaller local drives. With over a TB available to me on OneDrive, it is not possible to sync completely to some of my devices.
  • Collaboration: As a photographer, collaboration is sometimes the difference between a successful project and a failure. OneDrive in combination with Office products makes a huge difference in communication and development of a project. As a curriculum developer this plays a huge role in helping my team create timely and effective products.
  • Fetching: OneDrive has gone back and forth on the ability to fetch a file from another computer. I believe that when it is implemented properly this has been a great benefit. However, in its current implementation it has been taken out.
  • Place Holders: So based on the implementation sometimes Microsoft will use place holders on your local drive so that you can see what is there in the actual folder and then download the file if you need it. This is my preferred method. In its current version this also has been removed.
I believe OneDrive is the perfect solution for collaborating on Office documents. It is very fluid and happens in real time. I am also able to see who is currently working on the document. One area that becomes difficult is sharing Adobe files. I use Photoshop quite a bit. I would love to see the same type of real time collaboration capable across the board. I know its a long shot but it would definitely be nice.

Even though our company uses Office 360, there is no company wide policy for using of OneDrive as default file sharing and storage system. Every user has access to their own OneDrive directory. Most people use it to share files with other employees. I use it mostly to share files between many devices. I like to have my documentation accessible whenever I need it. Usually when I have ideas about some documentation I need to write, I start writing it at that moment. It can be in train on my way to work. Then I can open the same document on my office machine and continue working on it. I can imagine more people doing the same.
I also use OneDrive with OneNote - taking notes on my phone or Surface, and open them on desktop to review and organize them.
  • Integration with office, especially with Office 360.
  • Integration with OneNote.
  • It works on every platform and device.
  • Sometimes the files get corrupted, I had a situation on my home desktop PC (Windows 10), where I was not able to sync for a long time. I needed to remove one drive and install clean copy.
  • Synchronization speed and frequency sometimes is low.
OneDrive is well suited if you work with Microsoft Office on multiple machines. You can start your document on your phone during your commute to work and continue when you get to work. It is also well suited if you have a Surface or other tablet (or phone) that you like to take notes on during meetings, and then want to access these notes on your laptop or desktop machine.

OneDrive is being used primarily by our social media and reporting teams. It is used to store and send reports, artwork, and other assets to members across the team and to the client.
  • OneDrive has the capacity to hold a lot of files.
  • The search function is pretty easy to use.
  • You can store and view metadata on assets.
  • It can handle multiple people logged into the same account at the same time.
  • You can easily create links to share work with other people.
  • I am unable to upload folders to OneDrive (I use a Mac), so I have to go folder by folder to upload content.
I think OneDrive is great if you're sharing an account with multiple people on a team, but it can be a bit cumbersome to use if you have multiple folders to upload from a Mac.

I am an IT consultant. I used one drive to hold my data related to clients whether it is training material, documentation, etc. The data needed to be available all the time no matter where I went. Not only was it synced on my laptop, but it was also available at anytime through my browser. It works well and most client do not block OneDrive, which gives it some advantages since many file sync applications and services are blocked by corporate security.
  • One word - Microsoft - Most companies are heavily integrated with Microsoft, so it make sense to use OneDrive which easily integrates with other applications and office.
  • No Backups - I don't have to constantly worry about my data being backed up. It syncs in the background to the cloud. Even videos, music, and pictures.
  • Remove Computer Access - I can connect a computer to OneDrive. And then I can access the data on that computer through a browser, which is especially useful when traveling or if I have a lab setup.
  • Sometimes when the OneDrive app tries to sync and an Office application tries to sync, it might cause a sync conflict which you have to resolve manually. It's not a huge problem, but it is an annoyance.
  • Metadata - When you begin using OneDrive for everything and have a large number of files, sometimes you need more information about those files to properly filter and sort. This is a very easy thing to accomplish it, and I would like to see more column (metadata) options.
  • Video/music streaming - OneDrive allows you to store media files, therefore it should let you play them as well.
For Office work, documents, sharing, backup, and cloud storage, it works great. When you begin to move towards media, it is simply not built for that. I don't know what it would take, but if OneDrive added a streaming service, they would corner the market.

We currently use onedrive as an extra storage location for some files we would like to have an extra back up for. We also use if for our photographers to be able to upload and view files and multiple devices and also share files with clients. Overall great product.
  • Sharing across multiple devices.
  • Reliable, I have never had a problem accessing Onedrive
  • They have promotions to add more storage all the time.
  • I would like to see Onedrive being able to be access by all micrsoft devices (Xbox)
  • They recently cut storage, so there's that
  • I would love to see a OneDrive app for OSX
OneDrive is perfect for anyone, mac or pc, who uses multiple devices. Their UI is fairly easy to use and transfer times are quick making it great for anyone on the move. The sharing feature is also very clean and presentable when showing work to potential or current clients.

I was introduced to OneDrive for personal use via a free 200gb space offer through my Samsung device. Like DropBox, I am able to share files and folders with whomever I choose. I can also sync a specific folder on my hard drive with my Onedrive account. What attracted me to OneDrive a little over two years ago over DropBox, was OneDrive's pricing flexibility. I pay for plans that are closer to my needs and budget. But once I moved our MS Exchange email services to the cloud, my team pretty much had all the space they needed. For me, however, the greatest selling point is its integration with the Microsoft Office Suite. I don't have to sync OneDrive to my devices (especially when I have 1TB of information in the cloud) but I can still have easy access to view and edit documents online without having to download them.
  • Integration with Office Products
  • Great way to display photos and video
  • Sharing capabilities (for personal OneDrive accounts)
  • Easy control over which folders are downloaded to the computer (for personal OneDrive accounts)
  • I'd like there to be easier ways to allow access to OneDrive Business folders (like the implementations used in OneDrive Personal). I understand many organizations aim for security, but for small organizations, having to admins needed to allow external users access to folders is a pain.
  • I'd like it if OneDrive Business wasn't so integrated with Sharepoint. While Sharepoint offers many great features, it's too cumbersome to take the time out to learn at this point.
If you are looking for a perfect fit for your Microsoft Office products and Windows 10 system, I'd definitely recommend OneDrive. I write a lot of production scripts, and being able to collaborate on documents on OneDrive straight lessens the back and forth steps in our workflow. I'm also an avid Surface user and being able to work on the Surface while on the road and have my docs automatically sync with my desktop computer is huge convenience to me.
