AppRiver is a versatile solution that addresses various needs for companies and organizations. One key use case is its ability to provide company-wide inbound email filtering, effectively quarantining suspicious emails. This feature ensures that employees and users are protected from potential email threats and allows for a safer email environment. Another important use case is the filtering of email for both the company and its Managed Services Clients through AppRiver SecureTide. This effectively stops the majority of spam and summarizes questionable emails for review by end users, reducing the risk of malicious content reaching the recipient's inbox.

For businesses looking to resell Office 365 and encrypted email services, AppRiver is an ideal choice. It simplifies license management for Microsoft products, ensuring that licenses are assigned and removed appropriately without any hassle. Additionally, AppRiver serves as a cloud-based solution across multiple locations, providing a reseller with collective experience and support.

AppRiver proves to be valuable beyond just email filtering and Microsoft products. Users appreciate its intuitive interface that simplifies management, reducing the amount of basic user support required. Its support team is highly regarded, offering thorough guidance during implementation and assisting with various tasks. Moreover, AppRiver enables users to enhance their offerings by deploying and managing Microsoft Office products and other cloud and email solutions. Overall, AppRiver is a trusted solution that solves a range of problems such as spam filtering, email encryption, license management, secure file sharing, archiving, and more.

Useful Daily Quarantine List: The daily quarantine list emailed to users has proven to be a valuable tool for staying organized and ensuring the validity of suspicious emails, according to many reviewers. This feature helps users efficiently manage their email flow by providing a centralized location for reviewing and releasing potentially harmful messages. By allowing users to proactively verify the legitimacy of quarantined emails before release, it adds an extra layer of security to their communication workflow.

Multiple Email Filtering Options: Users appreciate the ability to filter emails in various ways, including by domain, email address, or text. This versatile filtering functionality enables users to easily sort and prioritize their incoming messages based on specific criteria. Whether they need to focus on certain senders or search for specific content within their inbox, this feature allows for efficient email management and quick access to relevant information.

Effective Link Protection: Users highly praise the inclusion of link protection as one of the newest options in AppRiver's services. With increasing concerns about phishing attacks and malicious links, this feature provides peace of mind by safeguarding users against potential threats. By scanning and analyzing URLs embedded in emails, it actively prevents users from accessing harmful websites that could compromise their security or privacy. This additional layer of protection is considered invaluable by reviewers who rely on AppRiver's services for secure communication.

Difficult Mail Rule Setup: Setting up mail rules in the software has been challenging for users due to the absence of operators to filter emails based on multiple criteria. Some users have expressed a need for the ability to filter emails based on both subject and header information.

Inconvenient Billing Process: The billing process is found to be inconvenient by several users as it is not integrated into their PSA tool, ConnectWise. They suggest that integrating billing into the PSA tool would make it easier to manage and track billing for Office 365 clients.

Complicated Microsoft 365 Tenant Setup: Users have mentioned that the setup of a Microsoft 365 Tenant in an automated manner lacks streamlining and room for improvement. They suggest that making the user interface more user-friendly would simplify the process.

Based on the user reviews, there are three common recommendations for the product:

  1. Consider AppRiver for simplicity and ease of use. Users highly recommend AppRiver for its user-friendly interface and straightforward implementation process. It is praised for offering an easy-to-use solution for antispam and antimalware needs.

  2. Look elsewhere as the product is just okay. Some users express that the product is average and suggest exploring alternative options. The product's performance might not meet the expectations of these users, prompting them to seek alternatives.

  3. Explore more expensive options with additional features. Some users mention that there are pricier alternatives available that offer a wider range of features. These users believe that investing in a more feature-rich solution could provide better protection against malicious actors.

Overall, while many users highly recommend AppRiver for its simplicity and ease of use, there are also suggestions to look elsewhere due to average performance or consider more advanced options.

We reseller exchange email services from Microsoft through AppRiver. This includes domain emails, exchange, and 365 apps.
  • You can see all the customers when you login
  • The have a chat bot
  • You can pay with a check
  • They are extremely difficult to get a hold of for support
  • The product list is confusing, you have to know exactly what you are looking for
  • The sales department is not always available
Recently: a new customer needed 15 addresses, including 365 and Exchange lite. I called Appriver to go over pricing - no response. I did chat with technical support who explained how to set up things but referred me to sales first. I've been waiting for sales to get back to me for over 2 weeks.
Since they changed to Zix, support is not as good as it once was, there are a lot of "we will get back to you" statements. But I always get an email to rate the technician, not the company.

We use AppRiver to support all employee user email accounts. I am the admin and manage all accounts through AppRiver. I typically use it weekly to add new users, remove users, update licenses, and most recently, to add a new line of business so we added another server/domain within our existing appriver package. The support team was extremely thorough and helpful - from step by step on appriver to Office 365. They walked me through the process and helped me implement new users in our new company as well as for distribution groups, members on lists, adding secondary email accounts to current profiles for my teams.
  • Customer support - very quick response times, very helpful, patient support team
  • Response follow-ups - they will walk through any support needs and follow up with a guide on how to that you can share for your teams to reference
  • User interface can be simplified and more user friendly.
  • When making updates, adding user licenses, making changes it can take a bit for them to work and can be glitchy.
  • Managing user email accounts, new, existing, removing
  • Adding or updating user licenses for Office 365
  • Support for Office 365 apps, install guides
  • Support guides for company teams to be able to work remotely and still reference the guide to implement new accounts, update their apps, etc.

We currently use AppRiver across our whole company as well as a dozen other brands we own and operate. We use it primarily for Office365 (Now Microsoft365) with our domains for hosted email, MS Teams, etc. Using AppRiver as our Microsoft365 provider has dramatically simplified management and love that fact that they offer support for all users. This has helped us to offload the amount of basic user support we have to offer to users of the applications.
  • User provisioning
  • End-user support
  • Simplified billing
  • Better technical support for Office365.
  • Having agents able to assist with Azure AD.
  • An automated way to sign up for and setup a Microsoft365 Tenant.
AppRiver is great for both small and large organizations. Small businesses are unlikely to have much if any technical support staff available to them, for which AppRiver would be a great help. Likewise for large companies, having AppRiver can save your tech support team from dealing with basic, common, and repetitive application support, and allowing them to better focus on more important tasks at hand.

We use AppRiver as our company email and Office 365 host and service provider. All management users at our company who have a corporate email address use AppRiver. AppRiver also provides unified and easy-to-administer email services for our company, such as Outlook, spam and malware filtering, and user administration functions.
  • User administration.
  • Email filtering.
  • Email support and reliability.
  • Office 365.
  • More dynamic and effective spam and malware filtering.
AppRiver is a great, functional email service platform for our small business.

We are an outsourced IT company and we are currently using AppRiver as the Office365 provider for a couple of our clients. Here are a few of the reasons we prefer AppRiver over other O365 providers:
  • Great Support!!
  • I always get through to support very quickly (within a few mins).
  • English speaking techs that are easy to understand.
  • Knowledgeable techs that can answer or assist me with my issues or can quickly escalate to someone who can.
  • My end users can call them directly, meaning faster resolutions for them, and fewer support calls to me.
  • Always have the right number of Licenses! If configured, when licenses are unassigned, AppRiver automatically removes them so that you're not paying for licenses you're not using.
  • Fast response to support calls.
  • Knowledgeable, easy to understand English speaking techs.
  • Automatic removal of unused licenses so that you never pay for unused licenses.
  • We had an issue with bills coming to us instead of going directly to the client that took a little longer to fix than we would have preferred.
  • It would be nice if the bills included the domain name. When I was receiving my client's bill, it was difficult to tell which domains the bill was for.
  • Cost a little more than from Microsoft directly.
Their support is head and shoulders above most companies in the industry!

We use AppRiver for company wide inbound email filtering. AppRiver was recommended to me after the solution we used for a couple of years dissolved. We have been very pleased with its performance and ability to quarantine emails that are suspicious.
  • Very useful daily quarantine list emailed to users.
  • Suspicious emails can be viewed online in their sandbox to check validity before releasing from quarantine.
  • Multiple ways to filter emails (domain, email address, text, etc)
  • Link protection is one of the newest options available and we absolutely love it!!
  • When setting up a mail rule, you cannot use operators. For example, you cannot filter an email where the subject contains "bad word" and the header contains "header info" . You can only filter on one or the other, not together.
  • Perhaps make it a little easier to see why an email was quarantined.
I would highly recommend AppRiver for inbound email filtering. We have been very pleased with the performance and the ease of use. The occasional email does get through, but I have had that happen on any email filtering we have used in the past. Great product and great support as well.

Weak Spam Filtering

We were using it to cut down on the amount of spam we were receiving. It helped us to minimize these malicious emails that cost our company time and money.
  • There are a lot of options for filtering. You can do so by domain, email, and even countries.
  • It didn't block spam well enough. We constantly had spam and spoofed emails come through that many people thought were legitimate. Became a bit of a problem for us.
AppRiver is supposed to be good for blocking spam, but it let a lot through that it should have caught.

We use AppRiver as our email filter for inbound and outbound emails. We use smart hosting to make sure that our emails are clean as they are delivered to our recipients.

We also only allow email delivery from their approved list of email delivery servers and have that as a rule on our firewall to keep all other connections from the internet from hitting port 25.

We also use their email encryption service that is difficult to use and manage as it's on a per-user basis and not at the domain level which makes it more difficult to work with. Also, my recipients of encrypted emails have to log in to a separate service to make this work and it is difficult to convince people to click on any links to get to our encrypted messages.
  • They have a great service and support team.
  • They have great simplified tools to manage our email flow and delivery.
  • They are affordable and I feel like I get a good amount of service for what we are paying.
  • They do not support DMARC and DKIM at this time and I don't know when or if they ever will.
  • Their SPF record is not great and can possibly cause issues, at least that is what my support company has told me.
  • Scanning of links in emails seems super limited and or non-existent. THings get through with completely bad malicious all the time and I assume they are not scanning them or they don't have a proper AV on their end.
  • Once a domain is whitelisted any bad emails that may be spoofing that email domain are let through and no other filters apply to the emails. It's frustrating to have to white list 20+ individual email addresses from a company and not be able to white list just the domain and not feel secure doing that.
I think AppRiver is suited for a small business looking for some basics for securing their email flow. Simple easy to use tools and the web GUI is great. The as-a-service feature is great as a small business doesn't have to set up or maintain scanning hardware or software on-premise. They also have a feature that caches emails if unable to be delivered, unfortunately, unlike other vendors they do not have an emergency inbox available online at this time.

I think larger businesses that need to ensure delivery of emails with DKIM and DMARC are going to find that this service is lacking and not able to handle some of the new norms of email security.

We use AppRiver SecureTide to filter email for our own company, and we use it to protect our Managed Services Clients as well. We include AppRiver Email filtering for all of our managed clients. Utilizing AppRiver (after hosting our own spam filtering solution for many clients) made protecting our clients and ourselves so much better. We stop the vast majority of spam outright, and what is questionable is summarized for review by the end users. We've evalutaed a number of other solutions over the years and have never had a reason to change from AppRiver.

We also resell Office 365 and encrypted email services via AppRiver.

  • Ease of management for a MSP. Even though there is no integration w/ PSA tools currently, I don't see this as a negative. The management is multi-tenant and simple to navigate.
  • Support via chat is fast and very competent. Only downside is they are just available during extended business hours, not 24x7 on the chat.
  • Reselling Office 365 is very simple and gives us an advantage over our competitors. Includes pre sales support and post sale support.
  • Encrypted email services act much like others, it works very well and includes and Outlook Plug in to make it obvious you intend to send messaged encrypted.
  • Email continuity. Email queuing is included, so if your onsite server goes down, mail queues at the spam filter until service is restored. You can step it up w/ their email continuity service which give you access to your mail at the spam filter in cases where your mail server is down for an extended period of time.
  • It would be nice if the billing was integrated into our PSA tool (ConnectWise) for ease of billing. Since we've been doing this for so long, we just wrapped the cost of spam filtering into the base price of our services. As we add more Office 365 clients, this feature would help us keep up with billing better.
  • There is still a separate portal for provisioning. I'd like to see this all on one place.
If you want a great spam filter product, AppRiver is an easy choice. You can filter on premises mail servers, Office 365, most all pop3 providers, etc... About the only use case where we don't use AppRiver is for banking and medical clients that need to use encrypted email. Since these two industries have standardized on ZIX email encryption, it is a better answer for them to use ZIX encryption rather than AppRiver.
