Optimizely - It's Good

Dead simple to do the basic set-up.

For more advanced targeting and segmenting capabilities, there are additional customizations you may want or need to consider that leverage Optimizely APIs and / or custom cookies and javascript flagging set-up. These aren't hard, but you will need a developer.

Optimizely offers configuration options for different website setups - be sure to use a snippet that is consistent with your website design. For example, the Optimizely snippet can include full or trimmed copies of the jQuery Javascript library (which it needs to function), but this doesn't need to be enabled if you already have jQuery on your website.

The implementation through the tag management system took a bit of trial and error at first, mostly due to the asynchronous nature of the TMS. We had to manipulate the implementation to assure that the Optimizely code was written to the page at the right time to allow the experiment content load in the browser without showing any of the original content first. We also needed to make some adjustments to the TMS code to get the integration with Site Catalyst timed appropriately.

Ensure that your Optimizely JS script is loaded in the header of the page. The reason for this is that the DOM loads the page, and if you are changing elements on the page in your variation, Optimizely needs to know this before the page loads so that it can make those changes for your variation.

We use a third-party tagging tool that allows business users to insert JavaScript into pages. I don't holistically recommend this because it can slow page loads. It's best to implement directly on the page.

Also, it can be difficult to carry the reporting variables over to Google Analytics and Crazy Egg.

In retrospect:

- I think I should have stressed more demo's / workshopping with the Optimizely team at the start. I felt too confident during demo stages, and when came time to actually start, I was a bit lost. (The answer is likely I should have had them on-hand for our first install.. they offered but I thought I was OK.)

- Really getting an understanding / asking them prior to install of how to make it really work for checkout pages / one that uses dynamic content or user interaction to determine what the UI does. Could have saved some time by addressing this at the beginning, as some things we needed to create on our site for Optimizely to "use" as a trigger for the variation test.

- Having a number of planned/hoped-for tests already in-hand before working with Optimizely team. Sharing those thoughts with them would likely have started conversations on additional things we needed to do to make them work (rather than figuring that out during the actual builds). Since I had development time available, I could have added more things to the baseline installation since my developers were already "looking under the hood" of the site.

Optimizely, not so much

The implementation process has been a major chore within our company. Developers have pushed back on placing the code snippet on any non-purchase transaction pages since it may cause load issues (therefore it is not on our site currently). For the purchase transaction pages, we have had issues with giving Optimizely access since we have a secure server blocking the iFrame from loading our site. Developers do not want to grant access since this may cause breaches in security.
