Eloqua Review - B2B

Eloqua is very well suited for global organizations where data refinement and automation programs play a big role. It helps teams manage data health and hygiene by utilizing the various tools and programs. For smaller companies that are only interested in basic email marketing - the steep learning curve makes Eloqua less suited.

It's the best product out there for any company with multiple brands, product lines, or a more complex business structure. Marketo and other competitors just aren't that flexible. But, what comes with that flexibility to "make it your own" also comes with a little complexity in setting it up. Highly recommend to hire the people that can support the tool (before implementation), start transforming your processes to support a "modern marketing" strategy, and then go with the tools that can help you execute that. If you don't do an implementation in that order, you will have problems. Definitely not a tool to implement if you are still in "batch & blast" mode at your firm, but it'll help you get there.

Enterprise operations is where it fits best, and in the hand of people with a bit of online knowledge. Since it is so stacked with features teammembers without a bit of online knowledge may simply get lost in the options that are at hand. Plus all of the dynamic settings simply take time to set up.

Oracle Responsys is perfect for any marketer looking to take their marketing to the next level. For the novice marketer there is plenty of opportunity to grow with the platform, and leverage the strategic minds at Oracle. For the advanced marketer, the tool is very powerful and can drive campaigns forward.

As with all testing software, you need a fair bit of traffic to get significant results, but Maxymiser would work well for any online business. The main consideration would be fully self serve vs managed, although I'd recommend a hybrid of the two to get the most benefit.

Are you looking to build a very robust B2B marketing program including lead prospecting, automation, optimization and various types of campaigns? Do you or your team have the time and the know-how to explore the service and teach yourself how to use it? If so, Eloqua is a great service to help you execute your marketing plan and improve ROI.

  • How many campaigns will you have? (You need to use Eloqua often to justify the price.)
  • What kind of campaign will you execute? Will you use emails and landing pages? Will you have sophisticated campaigns in which you take into consideration actions of the contacts (opens/clicks/form submits/website visits)? (For pure push email campaigns can you go for a cheaper product)
  • Will you also leverage a tracking function?
  • How many contacts will you import into Eloqua?
  • Which CRM are you using?
  • How many users will you have? How often will they be in the system?

It would make it easier if one understands their business and requirements before zeroing on a platform. Eloqua is great with on boarding and has an amazing support system. Also, make sure you are active on the Topliners community, which is a one-stop resource shop for Eloqua.
I would definitely recommend Eloqua to fellow Modern Marketers. I have used it at 2 companies for almost 3 years now. It is getting better with every release. I get excited when they have their release announcements. Definitely a market leader in the Marketing Automation Space.

The key here is to determine what their use of the product is. Someone with smaller needs likely does not need Eloqua. Depending on how they use Eloqua would change what I would recommend. I would be more than happy to recommend Eloqua to someone with the exact right needs.

Overall a great platform and in my opinion the leader in the industry. However, in order to achieve the benefits from any marketing automation platform, a marketing organization needs to take on the hard work themselves to learn these complex tools, and have the sound strategy behind how to fully leverage. Executives can get trapped in the promise of marketing automation vendors: that the tool will magically create more and better qualified leads for sales and revenues will start to increase; the tools themselves do not do this. It is the hard work of marketers developing the right strategy to use the tool that will eventually accomplish this. Also, understand ramp time is typically longer than expected since the data collection in the system takes time to build, and thus full leverage of such data. This is a complex undertaking!

The team edition or "standard edition" can be enough for a company that is an enterprise company, but not quite there yet with their automation strategy. Meaning, you don't necessarily have to buy the Enterprise edition just because you are an enterprise-level company. There is an affordable trim for smaller companies, as well, but there are a lot of competitor options for these smaller businesses, as well.

Eloqua is a great tool for a marketing department that has a need for advanced campaigns. It is a very powerful tool that can provide tremendous capability to experienced marketers. If you are new to using MAPs or are a smaller company with only basic e-mail needs it might be overkill.

If you have complicated use cases (multiple products, multiple sales teams), really dive into those use cases when you are evaluating tools. This goes for all of them. The "obvious" stuff Eloqua can handle, it's when you get into more complicated programs and requirements that you won't to be able to compare system to system. While I haven't used E10, based on conversations I had with people that went through the upgrade process, they lost some power that was available through E9. I'd also challenge them on the way Engage works for sales. We had problems where we couldn't fence off visibility for various types of emails and programs--and at the point we stopped using it, Sales could not create their own templates easily (it had to be done in the backend of Eloqua by a marketing user).

I would recommend Eloqua to any organization that is looking to automate their marketing efforts and better align with Sales. If an organization relies on emails to generate a significant amount of their leads, these email deployments should be automated. And the leads created should be scored so that only sales ready leads are assigned to Sales.

For large implementations and databases I still believe Eloqua is the best marketing automation tool out there. However, the marketing automation space is becoming much more competitive. Far more innovative startups (that are easier to use) are capturing market share quickly. If you are small or midsize company consider HubSpot, Yesware or Marketo. Key questions to ask Eloqua: - What are you doing to out-innovate companies such as Lattice, HubSpot and Yesware? - How is Oracle investing in Eloqua since the acquisition? What is the product roadmap?

For all our users I am already providing training to ensure that they are well informed before they use the platform. Training is so important, as is having a structure and defined processes to follow with things like consistent naming conventions. Without the basic building blocks and solid foundations then you always run the risk of making things difficult when you have had any CRM platform running for a few years so this is really vital to get right

I would recommend that you get informed about:

  • CRM Integration - We have a custom system which will limit some functionality.
  • Limitation in Eloqua's Data model - perhaps your business has a different data model which might be hard to capture in Eloqua.
  • User Interface - Can you see your users working with Eloqua?
  • Creation of assets like Landing Pages, Emails and Forms.
