Companies can't remove reviews or game the system. Here's why

If you have a simple, low volume product site, then a more basic optimisation tool would meet your needs. Tools that focus on WYSYWIG editors, that don't need technical expertise, are great for simple changes to user journeys or tweaks/copy changes to landing pages.

However as we operate a large scale and complex ecommerce site, simple WYSWIG tools can't meet all our needs. That is why a hybrid provider like Maxymiser meets those needs perfectly. We have the flexibility to make the changes we can with their Visual Campaign Builder (WYSWIG editor), but we also have the support and technical expertise to create tests that we are confident work across browsers and devices.

I have used optimisation tools at both ends of the spectrum (simple to very complex). Maxymiser for me has been the perfect blend between the two, which means we can get more tests onto the site and more benefit for our business.

It's only well-suited for departments who can invest A LOT of time into it in order to take advantage of everything it can do. For the cost and learning curve it takes, it really has to be fully integrated into the marketing team's every day. There's so much functionality that I don't think we even know every thing we're capable of doing at times. We have an employee who specializes in Eloqua, which really is a necessity.

Don't use Maxymiser for two totally different page designs. You could, but it'd be better to just talk to some users. Don't use Maxymiser if you don't have your own goals well defined. Maxymiser can measure, but then you don't know what to do with the data in that case. Keep in mind that "more clicks" does NOT necessarily make a winning design. Again, know your goal first, then engage.

Maxymiser is an extremely powerful tool. The people you get to work with are very helpful and knowledgeable, and the things you can learn from testing in general can help your company be more profitable. But, if you don't have the internal buy-in or the resources to implement winning tests in a timely manner then it's not going to do you any good. It's a two-way partnership and all interested parties need to be ready for it.

I am a big believer in continuous optimization and there's always room for improvement on any website in any industry. Continually running A/B and MVT tests on a website is not only helpful to the bottom line of the business, but also ensures you provide your end user with the best online experience possible.

For data I would highly recommend them compared to most data providers, they actually sell most of their data to other partners so most segments in DLX or Exelate actually come from BK. For their DMP it definitely depends on the client but their DMP has the same capabilities as all the major DMPs.

Update April 6th, 2014: Updating this from an 8/10 overall to a 6/10 overall. I'm no longer at a company that uses Eloqua (we use Marketo and chose Marketo as our best option moving forward in 2014). My concern about the Oracle acquisition has been highlighted by the fact that there has been a mass exodus of the most key Eloqua employees (CEO Joe Payne, CMO Heidi Melin, CTO Steve Woods, SVP of Product Paul Teshima, VP of Sales Jill Rowley, VP of Content Joe Chernov, Director of Customer Heather Foeh, and many many others who were absolutely critical to the company). Nearly anyone who had any relevance prior the acquisition 15 months ago is now gone. That doesn't bode well at all.

This tool is in reality more robust than we need it to be. I don't think that we will ever be able to use Responsys to its full potential. We cast a large net and post significant revenue across 14 ecom sites, however this tool may be better suited for organizations with one ecommerce site that is within the top 500 and has vast email lists and lots of data on their customers.

I absolutely recommend Eloqua! (That being said - as with any new technology purchase - I also recommend following due diligence best practices starting with a thorough requirements review). I've seen organizations run Eloqua successfully with a single person - our company requires a larger Power User model based on our needs. Eloqua provides amazing knowledge and experience to help clients get up and running and then extends that through the customer's journey via Eloqua University and the Topliners Community.

It can be difficult sometimes to apply B2B resources and strategies to B2C - although that's starting to change. From a technical perspective, the email as the only unique identifier has some challenges as well.

I think it's a really incredibly product, and again I can't stress enough how awesome their resources are for both the day-to-day user as well as the executive level to use to maximize their investment. I absolutely recommend the product.

Defining sales usage of leads so as to identify key data to send to CRM along with appropriate status
Simple approach to parameterization sometimes leads to poor process or to complicated ones. The key point is to well manage process before setup in Eloqua.

Implementing Eloqua is a part of change management for many organizations - it's a new way of doing business. Making sure you have a great team of e-marketing experts and strong support from your IT organizations is key. In addition, training for all marketing staff who will engage with the software is vital to your success.

How tightly - and how customized - do you plan to integrate Eloqua with your CRM? Do you need to ability to work with data in another environment? If so - I would caution the buyer to make an informed decision and to speak with companies (not agencies) who have completed the process. If the buyer is looking for an effective and easy-to-use E-Marketing tool with robust support I heartily endorse Eloqua.

Best suited for a mid-to-large (enterprise) organization, although I could see it working just fine with smaller organizations who need to integrate to a salesforce automation tool. Invest in training for internal folks. The initial set up may feel overwhelming; leverage professional service experts. But once you're accustomed to working with the software, it will become more second-nature to use.

Eloqua works very well in mid-to large-sized businesses. It takes a large team of IT and marketing experts to manage, making it difficult to reign for small businesses. There are better alternatives like HubSpot and ExactTarget that I would recommend for small businesses. And while I stated earlier that the e10 interface allows everyday marketers to build automated programs, the infrastructure is built to support elaborate programs from an IT team. So if you want to get the most out of it - have the business to support it.

Whilst Eloqua is and incredibly powerful platform, you will get out of it what you put in so preparation is the key to success. It also has a rather complex integration process so make sure plenty of time and resources are put aside to ensure this is carried out properly to avoid problems post-implementation.
