We currently use all of the above database technologies in different applications, but where the application is mission-critical we use Oracle. Microsoft SQL Server is good for canned applications such as back-office or HR. MySQL does not have the same level of logging or debugging that's available in Oracle Database 12c.

MySQL does not provide anywhere near the user interface or features that Oracle Database 12c provides. Building REST endpoints on MySQL is a much more challenging process and integrating it with a web app is much more complicated than building an ORDS endpoint within the Oracle Database 12c. MySQL is great for a small company who is not looking to spend a ton of money on Oracle Database 12c

The USDA has a lot of data and requires an efficient database platform to manage it. Oracle was selected based on the performance and effectiveness of manipulating data across different platforms. Even though it is a little bit costly but it is still a desirable database platform for future development and data management due to increasing sizes of our data.

Oracle 12c is able to support daily operations that might be required. Of course, Exadata is a powerful machine that is definitely fit for big scale but requires high demand of both CPU, IO, and memory processing. Also the one engineered system saves lots of time to build the infrastructure.

We use Oracle Database because the application we use requires Oracle and it stacks equally with SQL Server. However, SQL Server is a lot cheaper and offers few more functions than Oracle. It would be nice if Oracle tried to create some of the functions and simplicity of SQL Server.

We used SQL Server mainly because customers have some legacy applications that can only run on that environment, but SQL Server is good as well. It is easiest to manage users privileges, set up maintenance plans or create a new database from scratch by just using a backup file. If we had to choose, one Exadata appliance would be the reason to choose Oracle.

The others don't stack up to the Oracle Database - even SQLServer does not add up. Teradata may be close but their cost is greater than Oracle.

Oracle supports multiple platforms and is more reliable than Microsoft SQL. Oracle provides integrated hardware and software solutions. Microsoft will depend on their LDAP, which is not a recommended practice for our customers. Oracle has a future roadmap for Oracle Database to move to a cloud environment that can help all the customers shift to Oracle Cloud Datacenter without any issues.
