There are a lot of databases in the market like MongoDB, SQL Server etc. It all comes down to the business requirement. MongoDB and SQL Server are good for small scale applications. Whereas Oracle DB is an industry leader in enterprise applications.

Oracle is, I believe, the most expensive, but also the most feature-rich of the group. For in-house development, it stands apart from the pack.

Oracle Database is as good as any of the other relational databases I've used. The main reason why I would personally choose to use MySQL or Postgres over Oracle is that those options are free, and provide the same functionality. Today there are so many options that make it easy to setup and manage a DB (ie: Amazon RDS), so getting a lower costing DB makes a lot of sense to me.

It has been many, many years since I've used Microsoft Access. That being said, it was really my first introduction to databases. I was intrigued by the potential and how simple it can be to create your own forms, databases, etc. Oracle is like Microsoft on steroids. It is far more powerful than Access ever was. Granted, you may need to combine several Oracle products to achieve the types of results that Access had bundled into a single package, but the possibilities with Oracle are far greater.

We compared Oracle Database with Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle Database seemed to have the following advantages:
1. Better data security
2. Advanced analytic platform
3. Better integration with third-party tools
4. Better performance

Oracle completed solution and support is of cause better than open source solutions, we also choose other NoSQL database and Graph database, to address some very particular business use cases

Oracle Database 12c is far superior to Microsoft SQL Server (or any other database in fact). For starters, Oracle 12c offers much better performance and higher reliability. That itself should make the difference. Oracle 12c is also superior in terms of features.
On a high level, SQL Server is meant for simpler syntaxes, whereas Oracle databases expect much more efficient implementations and have the ability to deal with complex syntaxes well. Oracle 12c can run on pretty much any setup, while SQL Server has limited compatibility as it can only be setup on Windows. Lastly, SQL Server lacks any form of query optimisation.

1. The commercial application required an Oracle database running at the back end
2. Existing Oracle expertise makes it easy to manage an Oracle database
3. Confidence in Oracle databases: No need to worry about performance, scalability.

For some implementations in my company, Oracle Database was selected because all the support, experience, features, continuing development, etc that the product and Oracle's company has been providing so far, but also, it was selected by the system's company that my organization is using for all the manufacturing plants we have implemented achieve all the features that both have developed for our full use.

Microsoft SQL Server is our most commonly used DBMS because most vendors support it. The user interface for SQL Server Management studio is also very easy to use. For this reason, we usually prefer SQL Server over Oracle. However, we also support Oracle because it is a commonly supported database and not all vendors support SQL Server. Oracle has better documentation and support over SQL Server, and Oracle has more robust high availability and security options. SQL Server integrates well with Active Directory and has a cheaper cost model.

Oracle 12c is superior to SQL Server for large mission critical databases and applications. We also used DB2 in the past. We migrated many of our SAP applications from DB2 to Oracle 11.2 several years ago. These applications are now on Oracle 12c.

The reason why my team and organization chose to go with Oracle Database 12c with it stacked up against IBM's DB2, or Microsoft's SQL server, as when using other Oracle products, it has been much easier in the past to work along side with other Oracle products, which by the way Oracle will fully support, but if you go with other databases, Oracle will not help all that much.
