  • Oracle has cost us more money than SQL Server because of its limited flexibility with virtual technology. We mostly use VMware and because we don't have a large number of Oracle databases, it's not practical for us to license an entire VMware cluster.
  • While we don't have any specific numbers, we have benefited greatly by using Oracle Data Guard for high availability. Our outage management system utilizes this technology. As an energy company, it is critical for us to have this system available at all times in order to provide our customers with quick responses to power outages.

  • Stablility: Oracle 12c stability (besides some ORA-600 errrors) has been great. The ORA-600 required us to reorg some tables.
  • Easy upgrade: The upgrade process to Oracle 12c using DBUA has worked flawlessly.
  • OEM: Integration of our Oracle 12c databases with OEM has been great. No issues or patches needed with OEM 13.2.
  • We performed a hardware refresh in conjunction with our Oracle 12c upgrades. We upgraded to Redhat Linux 7, consolidated to less (but more powerful hardware), and upgraded to Oracle 12c. We also moved to new flash storage in the process.

  • I started my career with Oracle more than a decade back. I still use it. I don't see anything replacing it for our purpose.
  • Business relies on us for various system integrations. We use Oracle as a middle storage before we load data.
  • I do not see any negative impact. However, we wish there was a nice editor to group data and write complex queries.

Oracle 12C

  • There isn't much that I dislike with Oracle. It would have been great to have the GUI on the Oracle similar to SQL Server management studio to manage the databases much efficiently and automate lots of stuff more efficiently and faster. Re-inventing the wheel kind of scenarios are some of the examples that we could have eliminated if we would have had a comfortable GUI tool to run on.
  • With more automation or artificial intelligence as they named it, there is obvious overhead. To make things easy, evaluate what your application really need and disabled things you don't need. The license model is very complicated, you really need an expert in your organization to work on it.
  • Technically I do not like the price of the 12c other than Price feature. Oracle is one of the biggest and most stable databases, but it's kind of hard to learn how to use it and administrate it. It becomes involved with many libraries and files on the operating systems so you will have to know a good knowledge of Oracle and the OS.

  • Oracle 12c is appropriate for large-scale enterprise applications where data availability, integrity, disaster recovery and efficiency is important. It is not well suited to smaller organizations with small data sets and less need for immediate disaster cutover. The license cost for an Oracle 12c database installation makes it not relevant for small installations or smaller applications, while the support of Oracle and data archival and maintenance make a large installation well worth it.

  • Oracle has had a positive ROI as it made the return on Investment within the first two years of deployment.
  • With our clients aware that we are using Oracle, they have more confidence with us and are willing to engage in larger partnerships.

  • Oracle 12c provide great support and features that are efficient in terms of memory management as well as performance making it one of the best database tools in the market to manage our data. This adds to our overall ROI by making it maintainable.
  • It is also a great tool for enterprise level applications and integrates easily with other Oracle products like PeopleSoft that we primarily use making it the best viable solution in the market for our needs.
  • Give enhanced abilities to DBAs as well as Developers to manage data, but also adds an overhead by having to keep a closer eye. Needing more resources and adding to the overall cost of maintaining and upgrading to 12c.
