  • Some customers are using the Oracle Database standard version. In the standard version, some features are limited, but it is still working well. So from a license/cost perspective, even if we use a version with limited features, it is very robust and consistent.
  • Totally worth the investment. Oracle Database is the best database.

  • Multiple applications can use the same database and still get high performance
  • Licensing cost is still a concern compared to the other options available in the market that are very very inexpensive
  • Almost a maintenance free database

  • Negative ROI - It's extremely expensive to purchase
  • High cost of ownership due to platforms complexity and high cost of Oracle DBAs.
  • While it's expensive it does get the job done, it's stable and scaleable.

  • Positive Impact - I have been serving as a DBA to a Aviation Industry customer since 2009. Aviation Industry User community believes that Oracle database product is best product in the world. The reason would be it has been in the market for many years, more reliable product and the customer has more confidence in Oracle than others, has good market reputation, so many oracle expertise easily available whenever and where ever needed in affordable cost.
  • Positive Impact - Oracle12c with - ODA, Exadata, Big data appliance, Super cluster, and Oracle12c cloud offering are becoming popular day by day.
  • Negative Impact - Oracle licensing cost has been one of the most debatable topics in business user community every year.

  • Reduced Oracle licensing costs adapting to multi-tenant.
  • Reduce hardware foot print.
  • DB Performance was not stable with upgrade unless the optimizer was switched back to past version even after upgrade.

  • I am not 100% certain, but I heard that Oracle's licensing model is based on client metrics.
  • These days Oracle is seen by many as an outgoing database provider, especially if the Cloud use is intended, this is despite Oracle offers its own cloud, which remains nearly the least used in the World.
  • For decades, Oracle was a go-to solution in the corporate world as it advanced its database offerings very much and it remains very competitive

  • Positive impact on the business's compliance and security standards with better auditing due to use of Oracle Database.
  • Reduced need for upfront database license and hence larger ROI through ability to expand database instances in the Cloud when needed.

  • We wasted lots of money (Oracle is crazy expensive), time and effort on the project and were highly relieved when we found a different approach to supporting our aging ERP app that did not include Oracle.
  • Because of the difficulty of using Oracle, we spent a lot of money on consultants to help us over the conversion hump. Also wasted. And it was interesting to see them struggle with the software. Upgrades never went well always requiring multiple site visits, for example.

  • Initially, we purchased oracle for our website because it had a much lower licensing cost than Sybase (our dominant DB) for such tasks.
  • Over time, the level of effort required to keep it up, keep replication working, training and the like turned into a far greater expense than simply paying Sybase the extra licensing.
  • For us, the Oracle database was a financial disaster.

  • Oracle Database is sometimes complex and DBA intensive (you DO need one in your company), but the benefits outweigh the costs.
  • Virtualized databases - Multi-Tenant is a flagship feature of 12c that pays all the effort.
