PeopleSoft - Just Okay..

Oracle PeopleSoft is probably best suited for employee self-service functions such as benefits enrollment, payroll tax preferences, and other similar HR related features. The financial features and the applicant tracking system are behind other competing business systems. The UI of the system as a whole is not very modern, and not being mobile friendly is a factor here. At the same time, this system is still very comprehensive and best suited for a 1000+ employee organization both due to cost and services. While there have been hiccups over the years of utilizing PeopleSoft our developers and Oracle support have always been available to assist.

As mentioned, PeopleSoft specializes and is great for both Human Resources and for Finance reporting. I use it strictly for Human Resources, but have heard from colleagues that the financial side is also quite intuitive. The reporting tools within PeopleSoft make it simple to export lots of data that can then be put into Excel, Access or other programs to further analyze.

Peoplesoft HCM Review

Oracle PeopleSoft HCM is well suited for Payroll Processing where all the required legislation are catered to and country-specific business requirements are taken into account. Features delivered can be made configurable where businesses can decide based on their requirements and avoid customization.

Oracle PeopleSoft is well suited to multi-department / business group organisations, especially where multiple position management is part of the organisational design and where a single source of person data can drive a multitude of functions without the need to re-enter of duplicate data. It is unlikely to be suited to small organisations with fewer than 1,000 FTE.

Oracle Peoplesoft HCM is widely used across organization. It is well suited in most of the HCM activities like compensation, benefits, time reporting, training, leave application, resignation process etc. Any organizations which are planning to have HCM implemented should use this software, understand the functionalities and see if their requirements can be mapped. 9 out of 10 times, the requirements can be mapped easily.

  • Well suited for companies where HR environment is stable, no competition for talent and with capital budget constraints. Also for companies that customized the environment so much, that moving to a new platform requires significant investments.
  • Not perfect for companies in fast-moving industries fighting for talent and companies that need very good analytics regarding the workforce.

PeopleSoft HCM is very well suited for a medium-sized organization (1000+ employees) or larger that has particular needs, such as employee tracking with special account and job code flags along with special payroll rules. PeopleSoft HCM does a great job of making multinational tracking and languages fit with all of the modules, and that is a great benefit. Where PeopleSoft HCM falls down is with smaller organizations due to the higher licensing cost and more of a standard set of employment rules.

The product really does well with a human resource department in a small to medium employee base. It offers a fairly solid set of reporting tools that help track transactions or employee changes. The product also provides a fairly concise and clean flow of information with a one-stop portal type page. It can also help reduce paper usage with employee records.

A Vision into PeopleSoft

When trying to find specific data, whether current or historic, the Oracle PeopleSoft makes data management rather easy and effective. By utilizing the system better, paper files can be eliminated, and the quality of reproductions increases dramatically as any reproductions are made from the original. Additionally, locating information and attachments couldn't be more intuitive or easier.

It is not appropriate for small companies on a limited budget (unless perhaps you can get it as a "hosted" package - vanilla and you use it "as is" and is maintained by others). Otherwise, it is a powerful, integrated solution for HR, Payroll and Benefits. There is a need for experienced users and technical support, but if you have that, you can really leverage the software to perform functions across the organization - self service functions, complex payroll, automated benefits, etc.

I highly recommend HCM for global organizations as it will have all the fields that you need for each country. It will help you ensure you are compliant in every country.
The security settings are sometimes hard to configure, but once they are set, it is smooth sailing. I would recommend having a super user who can assist other employees as some functions are not intuitive if they try to teach themselves.

Oracle PeopleSoft HCM is well suited for human capital management (HCM) - HR, payroll, benefits for mid size and large organizations. It is very robust and functional in use. It is easy to maintain with multiple support across platforms to suit various client needs. Cons are - you need to integrate with various systems for other modules such as timekeeping, data warehouse, learning management systems. It would be nice to have Oracle developed modules for these which can provide a stiff competition to other third party vendors.

I think Oracle PeopleSoft HCM is best suited to a mid-size to large business with a traditional office staff who work from the same location. Smaller businesses will likely find the cost structure and less than stellar mobility support less attractive.

If you're not completely sold on the SaaS model, PeopleSoft should be at the top of your shortlist for selection. If you'd like to do a SaaS architecture, there are plenty of 3rd party vendors that are operating PeopleSoft in this manner.

PeopleSoft tends to be used in a lot of industries. In that respect, seeking out talent for support of PeopleSoft in an organization's enterprise is good. Also, many stakeholders have to be onboard with PeopleSoft, or any ERP in order for an implementation to be successful. Buy-in is extremely important.

I really enjoyed using PeopleSoft on a daily basis. It is always consistent and was perfect for administrative tasks that were often repetitive. I would highly recommend PeopleSoft in any office/administrative setting. Not only was it simple to use, it was also very easy to learn. I had never used this program before, and it did not take long to become comfortable using it.

I would say it is very well suited for what I use it for which is support Taleo in their recruiting environment. It is also good for managing department information, position information and new hires. It allows new hires to complete new hire paperwork online as well, which I think is a big plus. It is not only good for pre-employment but also for employment purposes.

Be sure to have a clear understanding of which modules are needed by the company and how those modules integrate with others in the enterprise (i.e. finance). Also, companies should make sure they clearly understand the cost implications of choosing to add or not add a module. The scope of implementation ideally should be done in conjunction with other business modules. Also, the company should have a clear understanding of how much customization they are willing to pay for versus using the product "out of the box".
