Oracle SQL Developer is well-suited for all companies that are using Oracle SQL Databases. First and foremost, it is absolutely free, and there are many free in-depth tutorials and documentation online to answer all of your questions. No matter the amount of experience, I am sure all database administrators will be able to work much more productively with their organization's databases through this IDE.

Oracle SQL developer is well suited to run quick reports or to extract quick info and create or change objects, but I would think is less appropriate when using it everyday to report when another tool should be used.

SQL Developer is well-suited for low to medium volume select, update, insert, and delete queries where the number of records touched is <1,000,000 records. SQL Developer is less suited for real PL/SQL development. Our software engineers use other tools to write and compile larger PL/SQL packages. It isn't a bad thing but it's something that could be looked into.

Oracle SQL Developer allows one pane of glass to make it valuable, and saves times while working on various other products of Oracle and other software. Oracle SQL Developer is good for any type of company, big or small, that needs it for development. The catch is, the way people are using it needs to be monitored. This is because it is a single product that connects to production and non-production, it is easy to make a mistake and push to the wrong instance.

SQL Developer is well suited for day to day work with data updates. This could be for updating large amounts of data or small fixes. It is also good for new hires or new programmers who may not be used to SQL since it's fairly easy to pick up. For ETL processing or data scientist work I think SQL Developer is less appropriate as it doesn't provide as many features as those users need or like.

It is fairly simple to use for new users or beginners in their SQL knowledge. It is easy to install and use to connect quickly to an Oracle Database. Great options for formatting your SQL code. I appreciate the reserved words being in a different color. It is hard to dig into your data with sorts and filters easily without having to rerun the SQL query. Sometimes this is painful when you have a long running query that you want to sort or filter and it then reruns the long-running query to make that happen

SQL developer is very well suited for developers and anyone who has a basic understanding of the SQL language to interact with a database. Even with very limited knowledge, you can benefit from this product since it can help you along if needed. There are even some built-in reports which can be run for common tasks or to be used as a template for new queries you may need to create.
On the flip side, I would not recommend this tool for business users with no experience with SQL. SQL Developer is much more user-friendly and powerful than the old-school SQL*Plus, but you still need to have some basic understanding of how to work with databases.

SQL Developer is well-suited for querying large data sets. Its performance is very good and it limits the returned result-sets to prevent the return of massive datasets in an interactive environment.

SQL Developer is less appropriate for end users querying database tables. The interface is designed more towards developers and less towards end users.

SQL Developer is a recommended software in cases like getting track of database objects and designing queries during the process of software development in any platform. For example, we use it when we implement a new Java app and need to be sure that objects and business logic are in line with our database structure.

I think it's a great tool for me as a software developer. However, as a DBA I think it would not be the only software I depend on to perform some data processes, although it can be really useful too.

A nice client tool

Many developers who are not familiar with dictionary views find SQL Developer a nice GUI to access DB objects. In addition to DBConsole and command lines, DBAs now have one more interface to manage jobs, reports, configurations. SQL Developer is free, which is a great benefit comparing with some other client tools. I use command line most of the time, which I am used to, and it gives nice display of execution plans.

Oracle SQL Developer is best suited while using Oracle Databases, may it be any versions or any Oracle Databases. But if you try using it with any other databases such as MariaDB or MySQL, it does not work very well, in fact it is quite useless. But I have to say, it is quite easy to use, and install.

Developing and testing database queries implemented in reports used by end users. Also well suited for debugging queries, though it could be better at identifying specific errors. It's interface is definitely designed more for developers than end users.

I think it is well suited when you want to work with many databases from a single interface. I usually set up connections to Dev, Test and Prod databases. It is useful when we need to browse database objects. The environment is also suitable for doing PL/SQL applications development. The tool just simplifies development and management of Oracle databases. Less appropriate for databases other than Oracle.

In case your company's database is not performance-critical, SQL developer is a reasonable choice. It is freely-downloadable from Oracle website, many data developers and analysts are familiar with, well documented. It was good in my organization since our end-users were domain-specific analysts who have a background in clinical fields but have skills of SQL additionally. In addition, we used the tool for "read-only" mostly to analyze clinical data, so poor code management of SQL developer wasn't a limitation.
