PagerDuty is a key monitoring and alerting component that we use org wide for Engineering Teams. The specific business problems that we address by using PagerDuty are
1. Org Wide alerting for critical components like error handling, out-of-memory detections etc
2. Infra based alerts to identify areas where load is a lot, for example if there are excessive arguments on an sidekiq queue
3. Low priority alerting of components as well
  • Alerting when Infra load becomes a lot eg, Sidekiq Arguments exceeding, Chewy Imports error
  • Manually Setup triggers for excessively running jobs
  • Error Based Handling based on team for appropriate routing and paging
  • Setup of teams, schedules, escalation policies with clear paths of instructions
Cons
  • More capabilities in the Mobile App
  • Search capabilities on incidents based on team and user-defined properties
I would highly recommend using PagerDuty because it is extremely useful in priority based alerting that can be configured to catch, mitigate and triage bottleneck reducing loads on server as well as other crucial key components. It helps in seggregating and defining the alerts based on specific paging keys giving external integrations a chance to utilize them is the best possible way to reduce the time spent in idle state. For me, PagerDuty is like a protective wrapper.

Want to keep your Application's / Website's Infra Up all time..? Use PagerDuty to keep your Infra monitored and engage people as required

In our org, only the Operation team (my team) uses PagerDuty, as it is an incident notification and escalation management tool. As an on-call schedule, PagerDuty will send email, SMS, and a call on mobile for on-Call agents depending on their shift timezones for critical/P1 issues, which helps to mitigate the issues within SLAs.
  • Sends email, SMS & call to the on-shift agent w.r.t their working time zones configured
  • If the on-call person, for some reason, can't make the request, he has the option to escalate that incident to the next level engineer
  • Incident history to make incident reports with timestamps
Cons
  • PagerDuty alerts website dashboard has room for improvement, it is extra colorful than needed
  • The alert details on the website are too much detailed, there should be some compact version to view incidents easily
  • The same goes for PagerDuty email alerts, it gives a detailed message which is good, but there should be a compact version too
Honestly, PagerDuty has almost all positives:
1) Prompt Call, Mail, SMS, and PagerDuty App notification (if installed in mobile) for critical incidents to be acknowledged and mitigated
2) Incident history to make incident reports
3) Very well suited options to On-Schedule changes
4) Easy to configure alerts

To be improved:
1) Compact website dashboard for Alerts
2) Compact version for emails

A feature-rich tool that exceeds the capability of similar tools

PagerDuty is being used company-wide to reduce MTTR and allow cross-functional teams to have an easy way to escalate to each other.
  • Scheduling
  • Escalation
  • Integrations
Cons
  • Permissions are flexible if implemented correctly, but can be cumbersome to set up for large groups of people.
PagerDuty is great for escalating to the people that need to fix an issue. It is a little pricey for users that just need to receive an FYI when there is an issue.

PagerDuty is an incredibly tool for managing response and incidents and I find it very effective and efficient. To people who are non technical skilled it is very friendly and easy to use since it has dashboard that is easy to understand and straightforward. When it comes to observation the app top notch like one can set alerts with notifications in way that when something goes wrong there is a fast action. It is crucial to have product that will aid in monitoring your program development architecture so as to detect, diagnose and resolve any incidents which may have adverse effects on your final products.
  • Managing incidents and responses effectively
  • Track investigation of problem for quick resolution
  • Customised alerts notifications system
Cons
  • Enhanced user interface
  • Quicken the learning curve for new users
  • Reduce TAT for customer support queries
PagerDuty has a well organised architecture which makes it effortless for one to use it. It employs the latest AI technologies like machine learning to help automatically monitor the product development cycle so as to pin point any incidents in the process and remedy them before they affect the performance of the product. With PagerDuty, it's not only figuring out the incidents but also evaluating their root causes so as to take measures of preventing their future occurrences. With the runbook automation feature, it makes it fast to assess incidents and resolve any identified issues.

We are using PD for our escalation process once a server has been triggered by Newrelic/Nagios or via emails by our partners.
  • Light weight integrations with monitoring tools.
  • Easy to handle crises
Cons
  • Scheduling part: the first phase when it automatically assigns team members, I need to override each one separately. I would like to be able to create my own schedule from scratch.
Crisis management is easy to handle via PD with the ability to send back resolved commands from mobile.
