Users of Panopto have found the software to be incredibly versatile for a wide range of use cases. From recording events, presentations, and demonstrations to capturing impromptu meetings, Panopto offers flexibility and convenience for content creation. Faculty and students have embraced the platform as a tool to provide anytime-anywhere access to educational content, aligning with the growing popularity of the flipped classroom paradigm. With Panopto's recording capabilities, students can control their individual progress by pausing, replaying, and adjusting playback speed, enhancing their learning experience. The software's availability for all users at UMBC, including faculty, staff, and students, further demonstrates its broad appeal in various academic settings.

Panopto's features extend beyond traditional lecture capture, serving as a versatile screencasting platform that enables users to record lectures, tutorials, how-to videos, and more. The software has been used extensively to archive webinars and organize/distribute training content. Its quick and easy media content capture and distribution capabilities cater to users with varying internet speeds and environments. Notably, Panopto has been adopted by an increasing number of staff members for recording lectures and creating short videos for students. Furthermore, dispersed student groups across different campuses have greatly benefited from the accessibility of Panopto, particularly when it comes to accessing assignment information and grappling with challenging teaching concepts. Overall, Panopto has transformed teaching and learning experiences across institutions by increasing engagement with students through searchable video recordings that greatly enhance their learning journey.

Users commonly recommend using Panopto for educational or lecture-based settings. They suggest considering it as an affordable solution for storing Zoom recordings. Additionally, they recommend taking advantage of Panopto's features, such as the notes feature for taking notes at specific times in a video, and its ability to share live streams and organize lectures with supporting materials. It is also advised to evaluate other tools before choosing Panopto, as some users have experienced performance issues on OSX. Users also recommend upgrading the support package for more end-user support and following Panopto's hardware recommendations for better compatibility. Furthermore, users praise Panopto's support, feature set, and ease of use. They suggest exploring its features through a trial and taking advantage of customer service. • I'm not at the level where I could provide information on ROI, but as a professor, I can unequivocally state that students were more prepared after we started using Panopto than prior to using it. I attribute that largely to information access unencumbered by time (of day), pace (recordings can be adjusted for speed), or space constraints. That made my task much easier as I could have them view materials that were previously recorded instead of inefficiently using time during class to answer questions that were asked and answered previously.
  • Almost all of my students were initially either ambivalent or a bit worried about submitting presentations on video but once they did, they noticed that their presentation skills improved, as they were able to practice, review, and re-record if needed. In my opinion that prepared them better for their careers.
  • A culture of cooperation grew as we increased the use of Panopto for recordings, as I would contact individuals from various departments across campus to work on interdisciplinary projects. The ability to have snippets (short recordings) from experts in their respective areas, addressing aspects of materials covered in our program enhanced the perception (and I would argue, the reality) of quality of our program.

  • Panopto integrates with our LMS, D2L quite well. It makes the process very simple for our instructors and students to record and watch videos.
  • It does not require any plugins or software to watch videos, as they load up in a web browser.
  • The videos work on mobile and embed easily in courses or on websites.
  • We also enjoy the easy sharing of videos and simplified management in the web portal.

  • During the pandemic, Panopto allows our faculty to quickly stage up lectures that were normally delivered in person, and these recordings reached thousands of students who could not come to campus for class.
  • Both faculty and student report high satisfaction with the flexibility and convenience of having Panopto video content available in a course to watch and rewatch for learner reinforcement.
  • Panopto's adaptable media distribution reduced impact on student technology and internet speeds when they might not have access to broadband connections, allowing them to continue to access essential course materials.
  • Speech to text capabilities. increase accessibility compliance of media content.
  • Archiving training materials in Panopto allows faculty, staff, TAs, and students to easily find recordings for reference.

  • Panopto has helped students better comprehend class material.
  • Panopto has given faculty the ability to use previously recorded lectures in the event they are unable to teach (illness, travel etc).
  • Panopto has allowed the administration to monitor class lectures without being visibly present in the class.

  • With some of our more tech-savvy faculty, it has freed up instructional design and multimedia staff as they are able to create a video on their own without a supervisor or tech support.
  • The provisioning aspect of integrating each section in our LMS is very cumbersome and a labor drain.
  • The mobile app has allowed end users to capture video at a time or place our normal film crews would not be able to get to.

  • It has helped make video content in Canvas Accessibility compliant without having to hire/pay transcribers to make the closed captioning for the video.
  • It is a more advanced screen capture program than we previously used, which has more editing ability and additional features.
  • The main negative is everyone wants to learn how to use it now, and the training we need to provide! Not really a negative to be honest, it's just more people are interested in the program because of all its features. :-)
