PeopleSoft Financials is being used across our entire organization in many facets. It is used to solve numerous problems and facilitate most of our processes in some regard and to some degree. We use PeopleSoft for HR, Financials, CRM, Contracts & Grants, Capitalized Asset Management - you name it - PeopleSoft plays a role in every process and procedure. The biggest problem the system solves is bringing all of our locations together on a single chart of accounts and platform, therefore tearing down silos that exist previously, and standardizing all data entry and sharing of information.

You really need a big enterprise to take advantage of PeopleSoft. It is not entirely user-friendly, and it often requires massive amounts of customization to make it work for layers if you will. Business experts can figure it out, but if you are expecting someone to easily learn how to use the timekeeping modules without heavy customization, it's really not for you. You need to know going in, that this is not for a small business at all, and not even a medium-sized enterprise. It's geared to massive organizations that need to integrate business processes over geographic areas and multiple departments.

We selected PeopleSoft Financials because it addresses every business need of our very large entity with separate offices over a relatively large geographical area. Most alternatives (with the exception of Oracle Cloud ERP and SAP) did not allow us to easily integrate and validate data sharing from our homegrown systems, of which we have a lot, and that was a huge factor as well. The most difficult part of transitioning to any ERP includes the cost of implementation and customization. If there is any downside to ERPs, it's the insane price tag on creating customized modules (and this is especially costly for PeopleSoft, SAP, and Oracle). Depending on the customization, this is usually in the 1+ million dollar range for a large enterprise. PeopleSoft can be customized to accomplish just about every single business need we've ever had, and that was a huge factor in the decision to use it. For smaller entities, there are many ERP solutions that you could use which will save you money and headaches in the long run. PeopleSoft is expensive, and it requires a lot of skill to implement, but when it is stable and customized to your process, there is nothing better out there for large to extra-large enterprises! Bottom line: If you have a big enterprise with a lot of moving parts, PeopleSoft could definitely be the right ERP for you. It's tried and true and has been since it appeared on the market.

You really need technical people to help you with PeopleSoft. Our group of talented functional and technical analysts is there to help when something goes wrong, and things do go wrong. It helps that our team is focused and rooted deeply in great customer service.

PeopleSoft is tried and true in our industry. We considered Oracle Financials, but PeopleSoft took the edge over it because it's been offering our industry the best solutions for decades. The ability to integrate all of our systems in one place, customize to our needs, and grow for the future sealed the deal.

Change management was a major issue with the implementation
As I mentioned before, PeopleSoft is not intuitive. People have a hard time learning how to properly enter data and use the system throughout almost all facets of the implementation. Change management is always a huge ordeal with PeopleSoft, and I have been a part of the CM team on more than 10 implementations in my career. If I have to say lessons learned, it is to train early and often. Do roadshows to help people understand the differences, and show them the product. You cannot, and I repeat - cannot - just throw people into PeopleSoft and expect them to succeed.

I recommend that everyone pay special attention to developing a solid testing and training plan if you are even thinking of implementing PeopleSoft. Be ready to obtain good trainers and developers, otherwise, your journey can be unnecessarily painful and much more expensive. Try to stay with an implementation partner who really has your needs at heart, and actually takes the time to understand your organization!
We have an in-house group of PeopleSoft experts we carefully curated and recruited, so we do not subscribe to any premium support through Oracle.
I can't give them a perfect rating because it does often take a long time and usually more [expensive] to resolve trying issues that cannot be solved by our in-house team. PeopleSoft is complicated, and the mix and match of user-created and stock modules cause problems very often. If you are looking for exceptional support, then Oracle products are not for you. Oracle is profit-driven, and most things end up requiring more expenditures. Unfortunately, in 25+ years of experience working with Oracle Financials and PeopleSoft, I cannot ever recall receiving exceptional support for any issue. I truly wish this was not the case but has always been my biggest sticking point with Oracle products other than the extremely high cost of ownership and operation.

Yes, but I don't use it
PeopleSoft is HARD to use, period. Everything except for the most rudimentary functionality requires a massive amount of training and ongoing support. There is nothing intuitive about it, and that is where it leaves a lot to be desired. However, due to the way it integrates so many things, there is little in the marketplace to challenge it when it comes to large enterprises.

PeopleSoft eProcurement is used at the department level across the organization for all purchasing needs outside of materials managed through our supply chain. This can include miscellaneous office supplies to order catering on advanced notice. The organization outgrew the ability to efficiently expense or justify monthly P-Cards, and automating the payment through ePro with the thousands of cost centers, restricted fund, and grant accounts eased burden on all end users. Although a delay between a department request and actually ordering will now occur, the overall benefit to stream line the financial management piece significantly outweighs any increase in timing. This review and all other details provided are my opinion alone, and not of my employer utilizing the system.
  • System allows for quick ordering from preferred vendors or past orders. This can expedite the process for frequent users.
  • PeopleSoft communicates with our finance department so allows for quick lookup and linking to the thousands of accounts that can be used fro purchasing. This reduces error in entering incorrect numbers that do not exist.
  • Streamline flow to the direct supervisor or account control to approve the ePro request. Triggers a direct email with link to the request, and the review/approval is less than a few clicks.
  • Once the initial approval is granted the current system is not setup to send any follow-up notification around additional approvals or order completion. This creates somewhat of a surprise effect on when an order will actually be made or delivered.
  • Due to the volume of accounts that can be entered, there are limited restrictions for someone to entered an incorrect cost center or even one they do not own.
  • Is not mobile friendly and must be logged into the organization's network to access the internal PeopleSoft platform.
Large organizations can benefit much more than smaller businesses. This is especially true with a centralized finance/purchasing department for a multi-location, statewide, or nationwide company as it streamlines the process to order and deliver where the request originated from. Requesting purchase on the fly or as needed make ePro and excellent choice both for management or front line staff. Having preferred vendors and vendor codes established in your organization make using eProcurement much easier for record keeping.
  • Positive is the centralized means to order and request purchases throughout the organization.
  • Negative is the ordering department typically has less control over delivery, and unless requested does not have a means to track shipment or learn of potential delays.
  • When ordering through eProcurement you are at the mercy for processing speed of a the purchasing or controlling department. Some 24 hours sales or discount codes often go to waste due to the time the request is submitted and goes to purchase.
PeopleSoft is a straight forward system that allows greater customization and communicates better with the rest of the organization's business tools. Concur is a "newer" system with a better user interface, but has proven to provide an even slower processing speed due to the numerous hierarchical approval settings. For this reason, Concur is only used for travel and expense purposes rather than invoicing or purchasing.

Many of our other systems were PeopleSoft and Oracle based, so the decision was to streamline our business tools to increase efficiency. The ability to centralize our procurement efforts at a large organization benefits both the department level as well as the organization as a whole. Continuing the use of the system was essential to our growing state wide presence.
I am aware of better systems, but this is what the employer I work for has to offer. Overall, there are fewer negatives than positives so I would support the usability. New staff members can quickly obtain access and go through a 5-10 minute training video that we build in house. The speed at which someone can become a proficient user speaks to the usability of ePro.
  • Submitting procurement requests for individual items can be done in a matter of minutes.
  • The approval process is quite easy for leadership and approving their team's requests can be done in a couple clicks once the email notification arrives.
  • Accessing details on the request to verify amount, price, and paying cost center or fund account is simple.
  • If a request has dozens of unique items this request completion process can get pretty lengthy as it required a lot of repetitive entry.
  • Depending how complex your accounting department is - the ability to correctly list the account to billed and where it should be sent do can be tricky.

PeopleSoft Financials is a good program. I use it to balance my budget, purchase items and follow up on items ordered. This program is very useful in tracking orders and items ordered.

I like the program, if a company wanted to use this program I would feel good recommending. Most employees could learn the program in a short period of time.

Because when I have a problem, our staff is well trained and they can answer most of my questions on the first call.

We are now using oracle for travel expences. I was having trouble entering in travel the first time. The staff took time to help me figure out the process and gave me a step by step guide.
  • Running the reports is pretty easy. It is user-friendly, easy to understand.
  • Easy to explain to others how to run reports. Can view purchases and see when items have been delivered.
  • Can order from Staples using PeopleSoft, orders from Staples come really fast using this system.
  • Putting in travel, but once you have done it a couple of times it becomes easier.
PeopleSoft financial is user friendly and once you get the hang of it is very useful in everyday accounting.
