What is Pixate (discontinued)?

Pixate was a design tool and service that aimed to transform the process of prototyping and designing mobile apps. According to the vendor, it offered a user-friendly platform for designers, mobile app developers, product managers, startups, and design agencies to easily create interactive prototypes. Pixate was suitable for companies of all sizes and was primarily used by UI/UX designers and graphic designers, but also found utility in the mobile app development, product management, startup, and design agency industries.

Key Features

Pixate Studio: A user-friendly design tool for creating interactive prototypes of mobile apps. It provided a drag-and-drop interface and allowed customization of app elements like buttons, menus, and animations.

Pixate Cloud: A cloud-based platform for storing and sharing prototypes. It facilitated collaboration among team members, allowing them to work together on projects, share prototypes with stakeholders, and gather feedback. The platform also offered version control for tracking changes and reverting to previous versions.

Interactive Prototyping: The ability to create interactive and animated prototypes, supporting gestures, transitions, and animations. Users could simulate interactions and test app functionality, with the option to preview prototypes on actual mobile devices for a realistic experience.

Design Customization: Extensive customization options for app elements, including typography, colors, spacing, and alignment. Users could import custom fonts and graphics to enhance the design and apply styles and themes to maintain consistency throughout the app.

Device Compatibility: Compatibility with both iOS and Android devices, allowing users to preview and test prototypes on various screen sizes and resolutions. This ensured a seamless user experience across different devices, with the ability to optimize designs for specific platforms and operating systems.

Collaboration and Sharing: Users could invite team members to collaborate on projects, assign roles and permissions, and gather feedback and comments from stakeholders. Pixate facilitated easy sharing of prototypes with clients, developers, and other stakeholders.

I use pixate to prototype user interfaces for research. I also use it to show user interface designs in a more final stage to my clients.
  • You can create quick prototypes without having too much knowledge in coding.
  • It shows changes in real time, which is super helpful.
  • I can send prototypes with a link to my clients.
  • I am missing some features that allow me to for example, to implement the camera of my phone, or the tilt of the phone.
Pixate is well suited for creating quick prototypes without too much knowledge in coding.
  • This program is one of the reasons I get recommended for other jobs.
Right now I am using sketch to create the assets and then I am importing them to pixate.
Before that I simply used video editing software to create a video of the interface, but I was never able to create a working prototype.
