What is Postmark?

Postmark is a transactional email platform for software teams.

According to the vendor, Postmark focuses not only on delivery, but incredibly fast delivery. Buy focusing on transactional email and not allowing sending of bulk promotional email, Postmark maintains a pristine reputation for delivery with ISPs.

The vendor doesn't ask customers to pay extra for "improved delivery" by upgrading to a dedicated IP. They stand by their pool of shared IPs just as strongly as their dedicated IP addresses because they manually approve every account and don't allow any bulk promotional email on our IPs.

I use Postmark currently and have used it since November 2020. I use it as an SMTP for transactional email on a bunch of websites (25+). It has been as close to perfect as I've experienced with most any SaaS I've used in the last decade, and I've used a lot of SaaS. I used to use website servers for transactional email (terrible, opaque experience), then eventually moved over to sendgrid (issues with spam and not great reporting), and finally settled on Postmark.

I love how I get a weekly email for each website with a summary of the total emails sent through Postmark, and bounces (if any). Usually, if there are bounces it's because someone put in the wrong email (occasionally because someone sent a prior email to spam). This has been useful to tell e-commerce clients when one of their customers didn't receive the confirmation email due to entering the wrong email during purchase.

Everything about Postmark is great - support, setup, product, visibility into what's going on. I wasn't sure what to expect when ActiveCampaign bought it, but so far, no change. A+, highly recommend for transactional email.
  • Great, helpful customer support (rarely needed)
  • Reliable product
  • Well thought out interface, easy setup
  • Great ongoing visibility into status of emails sent through Postmark
  • Honestly, there is no real place I would expect them to improve.
Postmark is great if you need a reliable SMTP provider.

We send primarily transactional email - notifications for verifying user email addresses, for new messages received, and alerts based upon user preferences. We also send occasional, more generic broadcast emails to subsets of the user base. Postmark has been the most effective email provider in ensuring that emails end up in user inboxes. This is especially critical for us, considering we require email verification to begin using our services.
  • Email deliverability
  • Uptime and stability
  • Delivery and open tracking
  • I wish the DMARC monitoring service was built-in
  • I wish they kept historical records longer, or had an option to
  • I wish they helped set up BIMI
  • I wish they had a feature to validate/verify an email address
If email deliverability is important, then Postmark is king. I've used all sorts of providers, with dedicated IPs and without. Postmark has always had the best deliverability and has resulted in the least amount of customer service time wasted dealing with users who simply did not receive an important email from us. It is pricier than other options, but it's well worth it if deliverability is at all important to you.

I use Postmark to send all transactional emails for a web-based baseball simulation game that I created called Pennant Wars.

Some examples of transactional emails are for new user sign-up, order confirmation, password reset, and emails dynamically alerting users about in-game occurrences (end of a season, monthly team report, etc.).
  • Easy to integrate with
  • Very good delivery rates
  • Open tracking
  • Supports bootstrapped businesses
  • Postmark meets all of my needs, and there's nothing missing that I wish it had.
Postmark is really well suited for my use case. Another thing to mention is the fact that it allows you to trigger webhooks on events like email bounce or spam complaints.

I can't speak to how well-suited Postmark would be for other use cases or at a much larger scale. For what I need, it's perfect, and it has been one of, if not the most, stable pieces of my entire stack.

We've used Postmark for many of the email delivery services of our app. Due to the nature of what Postmark accomplishes, it's primarily used in the development process and deployment of app features that require an email to be sent and tracked. So I guess you could say it's used by our Research and Development team in its execution.
  • Reliability is a must, and we see this with Postmark.
  • Implementation was easy enough.
  • Not many cons since it's pretty straightforward, and if email delivery service was often impacted, we'd most likely find a new provider.
Postmark is suited for those who need a simple and diverse solution for fast email delivery. This could be anything from the actual basic need to execute email, to the robust tracking capabilities of emails opened, click tracking and link tracking. This is super important when your customer is making demands on your support team and not receiving password reset emails. You don't want to be in that situation.

Postmark is extremely helpful in our company. The program not only helps us locate emails but also gives us the ability to verify that messages have been processed and delivered successfully. Additionally, we are able to confirm the contents of emails that have been sent out, providing proof to our clients of our communications to them.
  • User Interface: easy to read
  • Delivery confirmation
  • Re-enabling blocked addresses
  • Navigation
  • Training tools
When we receive reports that a client has not received an email, Postmark allows us to review the handshake and whether the message was successfully processed and delivered. If the email was bounced for any reason, Postmark allows us to reenable the account to open the communication channel once again.

Postmark is used as our primary production email service. We also utilize it for our client support team to track transmission and receipt of various emails sent to our direct and indirect customers. We have been utilizing their service for years, and I don't anticipate us making a change anytime soon.
  • Excellent real time tracking of production server.
  • Automated reporting is very nice. Great to not have to pull reports manually.
  • User management is very easy.
  • Cost effective.
  • Latency can be an issue.
  • Postmark utilizes a status page, which is very helpful however the last incident we experienced with Postmark was not documented on the page.
  • API was simple to write to.
We are a software company that utilizes Postmark for our production emails. We have sent just over 3 million emails in the last 30 days, and have had no issues within that time period.

Postmark support can be slow to respond when an issue arises, however they always resolve issues within a timely manner.

Generally our emails are not time sensitive, so it is not an issue for us but if you need emails delivered immediately-you might want to weigh options.

Postmark is the email platform our software uses to send and receive emails. It is used by our product team and support team predominantly. However, Postmark is the email foundation of the software we sell, so technically our whole company is using it when sending messages from our software.
  • Email tracking: we often get questions from customers about if a certain message was delivered and we are able to quickly search by email address to pull the message in question up and view the status.
  • Proactive System Status Updates: if Postmark ever experiences an issue a banner is posted across the top of their webpage with the current status. You can click into the banner to be redirected to their status page to gain more insight.
  • Filtering: we can filter messages by tags which makes it helpful when looking to view a certain type of message (i.e 'DailyDigest').
  • We have run into some glitches in their system that have causes messages to not get delivered or for delivery to be delayed. I'm not sure what causes this on Postmark's end but it makes for some very angry customers on our end.
If you are looking for an email platform to send and receive messages through, Postmark is a great solution. You are able to pull reports based on tracking and spam alerts to gain further insight.

We are using Postmark to send all transactional emails. It has increased our deliverability and ensured smooth and fast email delivery. The email templates have also allowed for efficient API calls between our platform and Postmark. Postmark support is great as well and was easy to implement.
  • Transactional Emails.
  • Great user interface. Easy to manage templates and see activity.
  • High deliverability rates. Seen much better deliverability scores then when we had our own dedicated IP.
  • Email history limited to 45 days. Longer would be helpful.
  • The ability to re-deliver messages from the website directly when they fail.
  • Don't have much else. Very solid service.
It is well suited for transactional emails and emails that you need to ensure reach your user quickly. It is not well suited to emails that are marketing based or for newsletters etc. The emails must be transactional since the domain reputation is one of their highest priorities.

We use Postmark to send transactional emails from our own website. This includes e-commerce sales/receipts and support requests/messaging. We also use Postmark to handle inbound messaging and routing.
  • Deliverability is far better than any other ESP I've used
  • Customer support is quick, friendly and passionate
  • You can tell this is a small company which cares about their services
  • Nice UI with a clear 45-day history of messages/events
  • The new Rebound API is awesome for catching users who enter the wrong email address during an order/signup request
  • I wish there was an annual payment option. Currently, you can only pay monthly.
Postmark is essential if you need your emails to reach customer inboxes. It's more expensive than other providers, however, I see this as a bonus as it will help to reduce exploitation and "bad actors" from damaging the shared IP reputation.

We are using Postmark to manage all transactional email messages for clients. It was selected because it offers some unique features that help us use it quickly during the development process. Also, it offers both outbound and inbound services that help us address problems related to a client's access to websites - and email is the only way to communicate with our systems.
  • Excellent deliverability
  • Ease of go-live since SMTP is also available (apart from API)
  • Inbound email handling
  • I would love to see more search capabilities
  • More improvements on the templating language
  • More permissions for users
Postmark can be used to handle all communications for all transactional messages for a website. Also, it can be used for handling incoming messages that can trigger POST requests for external services.
It is not the correct solution for handling email marketing since it does not offer reporting capabilities and other main features found in email marketing platforms.
