What is Schoology Learning?

Schoology, now a PowerSchool Unified Classroom product, is a learning management system (LMS). Schoology’s platform is built specifically for the needs of K-12 students, teachers, and administrators. Schoology aims to combine as many parts of the learning process as possible into a single platform. By doing this they aim to simplify the learning experience for students, parents, and teachers.

The Basic Package is free for instructors and includes features such as an Academic Activity Dashboard, Instructional Tools, and a Native Document Grader. The Enterprise Package includes the Basic Package and additional features such as Systemwide Administration, User Management, and Workload Planning.

PowerSchool acquired Schoology in late 2019.

Overview of Schoology Features

Schoology focuses on student mastery of learning objectives by offering a proficiency model of grading and traditional numeric grades. Through their online platform, it is simple to deliver assessments to students regardless of their location. Assessments are flexible and can be quick quizzes, locally-created benchmarks, or district-wide assessments.

Through Schoology’s built-in data and analytics, educators can determine what is working and what is not at several different levels. The reports generated give information at both the class and school level and can be used by teachers to determine how their students are doing, as well as administrators to ensure that all students school-wide are on track. Reports can be shared via a secure URL, and access is filtered based on staff permissions

Schoology aims to ensure effective communication between parents and educators. Teachers can send weekly digests about classroom activities. Parents can instantly access their students' grades to get an idea of their child’s full learning experience.

Per the vendor, Schoology is easy to use in combination with other learning tools and comes with over 200 native integrations. Educators can use said tools to quickly create assignments. Courses can be built from scratch, or educators can use Schoology’s content library that contains over 300 applications. Courses can be easily shared with other teachers or can be re-used across multiple academic years.

Collaboration is encouraged between teachers through the Public Groups pages on Schoology. These are community pages where educators can share ideas, ask questions and learn from each other.

Tailored Education Solutions

Schoology aims to create a highly tailored educational experience for students that ensures that they meet learning objectives in the way that works best for them. By offering personalized pacing, students can work through the material at the speed that suits their individual needs.

Educators also have the option of creating lessons that give students a choice in how they learn the material. Students can select the tasks that suit their learning style, and a grade for that lesson appears in the grade book, regardless of which task was selected.

Schoology also emphasizes the importance of collaboration between students, even in a remote learning environment. The Groups feature allows students to communicate and store resources about sports, clubs, etc. outside of their course modules.

My district purchased the Enterprise version of Schoology and we are in the process of training all our teachers how to use it. What our secondary teachers love about it is that it syncs to Powerschool so what they assign and grade seamlessly goes into their Powerschool grade book. What they also love is that they can import tests from Examview. Those two features are the way to draw teachers in, but frankly the use of threaded discussions that can be graded, and the ability to use rich media in assignments, discussions and tests are the best feature. Not only can teachers add video and images to their assignments/discussions/tests, but students can turn those things in as well. This allows teachers to collect and grade a variety of digital assignments without filling their inbox. Schoology organizes the process for handing out and collecting all sorts of student work. Also, because everything is organized it saves teachers a lot of time.
  • Schoology saves teachers time because student work is organized by assignment so it is easy to grade and assign work.
  • Schoology allows students to be creative because they can submit all sorts of digital work (video, images, youtube videos, audio, notability)
  • Schoology connects teachers both within your district and in the world by creating a place for teachers to share content
  • I would love to be able to export my class list inside the badges function
  • I would love to be able to have flexible categories for syncing grade books between Schoology and Powerschool
  • I would love to be able to assign badges from completion folders
Schoology is great for all areas, but I highly recommend it for middle and high school because of the grade book feature.

San Juan Unified School District is using Schoology throughout our district. Teachers, administrators, district office personal, and counselors utilize Schoology in a variety of ways. Teachers use it as a virtual classroom and a collaborative learning environment, a repository where they can store and share resources, and communication tool for parents, teachers, and peers. Teachers post assignments, create quizzes, and have online classroom discussions. They post announcements and events. They use the Schoology Gradebook to track mastery of standards and, in turn, differentiate assignments for students. Schoology is being used for blended online professional development for teachers and other staff.
  • Schoology is the perfect environment for the blended learning classroom. Teachers can post assignments, tests, discussions, and events all within the "virtual" classroom.
  • Schoology's mastery tracking allows teachers to easily track standards and specific learning criteria.
  • Schoology is a repository for all resources. These resources can be shared and accessed anywhere, anytime, as long as you have an internet connection.
  • It is difficult to find anything bad to say about Schoology. One thing I would like to see changed is "groups." I would like to see groups have more features available, more like the "courses." For example, I would like to be able to display "inline" within a group, like I can in a course.
Schoology is well suited for any educational environment. Many teachers have websites, but Schoology is a better option and is much more comprehensive. You can use as little or as much as you want - from a simple resource repository to a comprehensive virtual classroom.

Schoology is currently being used by teachers to deliver content to students. I have used it since 2013 and I know other teachers in my district are volunteering to join as well. We do not have a district mandated learning management system we must use, Schoology is the one we are choosing to use. The primary gap Schoology fills is how to deliver online content to students reliably and in a user-friendly environment. Schoology is a system that is easy to use by both teachers and students so there is buy-in by both primary users. The other gap, content delivery, is done remarkably well by Schoology. I can take my content, digitize it, deliver it, and have students interact with it seamlessly. I can also extend my class by including videos and external links. I can also increase student engagement with gamified badges and set up my class to focus on student mastery. All of this is not just challenging to do without Schoology, some of it would be impossible.
  • The first thing Schoology does well is manage the class. The beginning of the course is one of the most stressful because I am introducing both new technology and content to students. However, with Schoology, students can be on-boarded within minutes and my content is ready as fast as I am.
  • The second thing Schoology does well is content delivery. I can set up my course to deliver the content in the most efficient and engaging ways. I can set deadlines for individual assignments or group them into larger folders that would represent larger units.
  • Lastly, Schoology allows me to better engage my students. I have a classroom set of Chromebooks and to keep student engagement, there has to be little down-time. Schoology helps me to organize my content to quickly switch topics/lessons. There is no down-time of collecting or passing out papers. Nor is there down time where students are waiting around for the next instruction. I can put all of my content online and students can individually move through it at their own pace.
  • A con is their grading. I use Google Apps and specifically Google Docs for my student's writing assignments. The Schoology annotation feature for submissions is not the greatest and Google Docs provides a better feedback environment. Unfortunately, Google Docs can't be embedded so I need to have students submit their document links and then I need to go into Google Docs to give feedback. It adds more steps than I think it should take to give quick student feedback.
  • The Schoology grading/scoring interface can be very "click" heavy, whereby I need to click on multiple items before I finish grading each assignment. This slows down the process more than it should.
I have tested Schoology both when teaching in class and online. In both environments it has excelled. Schoology is a very robust LMS and works very well for instructors who are comfortable online and are not afraid of exploring new technology. It might be a little intimidating to new instructors at first but after a few days of interacting with Schoology should clear up any fears. Also, younger students might find the different folders and clickable areas a bit too much. I am thinking K-4th Grade. Schoology could be a platform for an individual instructor to sell their courses but it doesn't have a payment gateway. It is really meant for enterprise solutions rather than individual instructors.

In our district Schoology is being used throughout our system from early childhood through high school with students, staff, and parents. There are many benefits that Schoology has brought our organization but the two that have been the most effective have been communication and access to information and learning. Through the use of Schoology we have broken down the silos of isolated communication threads, through course discussions and updates students and staff are more connected to one another and are able to support the thinking and workflow of courses. Parents are also able to view messages and posts from their child or teacher(s) which has created an easier pathway of communication between home and school. One of the other key opportunities that Schoology has brought forward for our users has been access to learning. Through courses and groups teachers are able to design learning online that mirrors the experiences that students are having in the classroom, this is beneficial so that students can access teaching points, flipped content videos, enrichment links, discussion threads, and much more to extend their learning beyond the walls of the classroom.
  • The discussion board feature that Schoology has designed has been an effective medium for students and staff of all learning levels to design, share, collaborate, and connect learning together. With the option for users to upload links, videos, images, or text this has been a game changer in how our learners are able to demonstrate their understanding and mastery of content.
  • Authentic feedback is a highly valuable component that Schoology has thoughtfully crafted into multiple feature areas. One of these is through the quiz feedback option. Through this feature instructors are able to proactively insert in a link, document, image, or video to a learner that either validates their learning is accurate and on track or it provides immediate reteaching opportunities for students through any of the above mentioned options. The other feature that Schoology has designed an effective path for authentic feedback is through the assignment component. Being able to share a 'grade comment' or a feedback comment allows our learners the opportunity to view feedback in a more immediate fashion but also allows the student to have a private dialogue with their teacher about an assignment to gain deeper clarification or possible to expand on the original assignment as it was written.
  • Making our learning visible through the use of Schoology media albums has supported our youngest learners all the way up to our on-going professional adult learners. Media albums have brought forward fantastic opportunities for students to reimagine how they connect to their learning through images and video. Our learners have demonstrated to us that the power in learning is when you can not only visualize your thinking but also articulate it in words. Through the use of the comment box in a media album our learners get the best of both learning styles.
  • Currently one area that our users would like Schoology to improve on is with their portfolio feature. Schoology has a portfolio option but it currently doesn't work through their mobile app. and this has been limiting for some of our users. It currently is also limiting in the content that a learner can add to it. We need it to have the same versatile supporting learning. In a strong 1-1 district having a digital portfolio option for mobile and online users is critical to showcasing our learning.
  • Slide Deck
Schoology is well suited for teachers to share access and equity of learning experiences and resources with students. It is also a perfect place for students to share their learning with teachers, engage in discussions with peers, and make their learning visible with others.

Schoology is being used district wide in our K-12 school district. Schoology is used throughout the entire High School that I service as an Instructional Technology Coordinator. Many of the departments use it within a unique way. Teachers from physical education to our teachers of special needs have discovered and continue to discover ways in which to use Schoology to enhance their content, make their course more interactive, and monitor and track the progress of their students, just to name a few ways they are using it.
  • Track the progress of Student Learner Objectives.
  • Provides a platform where teachers can begin to create a blended learning environments for their students.
  • Allows students the ability to submit assignments electronically and in a variety of formats, including with audio and video.
  • Allows students to participate in online moderated discussions.
  • I would like to see the ability to see a full size rubric on the iPad when scoring student work.
  • Teachers have requested the ability to give a student a wholistic score on a rubric instead of a total score to reflect standards based grading practices.
  • I would like to see how the LTI functionality works with the support of grade pass back from Schoology when an assignment has been created using an LTI.
  • The audio/video recording feature still seems to have some glitches with it that are causing some teachers some frustration. Students try to submit an audio directly into Schoology and it freezes. Teachers try to record a question in a Schoology test and it doesn't record properly or it attaches to another question not meant to be attached to.
Schoology could be used in K-12 schools, post secondary schools, business organizations, you name it, there could be a use for it.

Schoology is an all encompassing learning management system (LMS) that allows teachers to expand the walls of the classroom beyond the school day. Students can easily log into their Schoology account and access class materials, watch embedded videos, practice skills, or respond to class discussions. Schoology is used in our entire school building.
  • Teachers can organize and create folders and build an entire course throughout the year.
  • Restrictions can easily be enabled to ensure that student's post before they see other responses.
  • Students can easily add their Google Drive App and submit assignments from Google Drive directly to Schoology.
  • Teachers have an easy toggle feature that allows them to score student work efficiently without opening new tabs for every student assignment.
  • The Schoology App works extremely well in a 1:1 iPad classroom.
  • Rubrics can be easily created and directly attached to the assignment.
  • The App doesn't provide all of the same features as the web version.
Students treat Schoology as a course and not another form of social media. I find the assignment feature and uploading from Google Drive seamless. I've been able to leave feedback and not feel overwhelmed reading 100 essays submitted in Schoology. The hardest feature of Schoology is learning and discovering all of the bells and whistles it offers. I would recommend using Schoology with a team of teachers or a colleague. It's much easier to bounce ideas off of each other as you tinker with its features.

Our school district of 13,000 students uses Schoology as our primary learning management system. It is being used by our entire secondary program.

We needed a way for students to be able to communicate with teachers, access digital materials, submit assignments, etc. I also wanted a solution that would be super easy to teach teachers how to use.
  • Ease-of-use. This makes it easier for student and teachers to learn and to use quickly and efficiently.
  • Communicate. Students and teachers can easily communicate with each other in a variety of ways.
  • Collaborate. Schoology makes it easier for our teachers to share lesson plans, quiz banks and digital content with each other and other educators.
  • I'd love for Schoology to make it even easier to add homework assignments without having to create a whole assignment.

At our school site we currently using Schoology across the campus. It is used by teachers, students, and parents throughout the entire year. This helps eliminate student excuses for not knowing homework assignments and when upcoming assignments, test, and quizzes are. Teachers use it on a daily basis for various exercises and assignments in their classrooms. Having teacherr use it for tests and quizzes, this allows teachers to use Schoology as a formative assessment as well.
  • It is easy to use!
  • The Schoology community is amazing!
  • It allows parents to stay on top of their child's school work!
  • Better organization with Google Apps.
  • Not all math functions are all available.
  • Mobile app needs to have similar functions to web site.
A simple start is creating using a Learning Management System (LMS). Schoology is simply THE best LMS that is out there right now and it is only getting better. The app integration, such as Google Apps, Khan Academy, PowerSchool, and other apps makes it more simple for teachers and students to use so that learning may take place. Basic accounts are free and it does not get much better than that!

As the Learning Services department at Falcon School District 49 saw the need to offer professional learning in other ways, we explored the possibility of creating, delivering and managing our own online professional development. Thus, we needed a way to facilitate and manage learning, which led me down the path of learning about and exploring various learning management systems. Having taught technology in education in one form or another for nearly 30 years I knew if we were going to have any immediate and longterm success then we would need to have a system that was extremely simple to use! That was my number one criteria. Schoology fit the bill and within two months of using the free version our senior leadership team agreed to move to an enterprise version so all students and staff had access with enterprise features and management options.
  • Many of our teachers are discovering the power of mastery grading and mastery learning. The ability to link all items to standards and receive mastery reporting is a game changer.
  • Ease of use both as a student and instructor.
  • The ability to leverage teaching, time, talent and resources.
  • Schoology gives an easy to access avenue for parents to engage in learning like never before. When teachers use Schoology to its full potential the parent view allows parents to be a partner in the education process.
  • Handy, ready-made professional development modules (Schoology) that are constantly updated and made available to system admin for distribution and management.
  • More rapid response upon clicks!
  • Allow system admins the ability to set permissions by schools and not just for the entire enterprise. The needs of elementary is quite different than the needs of high school students, plus, building leaders want the ability to taylor their LMS to their preferences.
Schoology has been a huge success with students, teachers and parents when students have devices. Teachers struggle using Schoology with classes that lack devices. The lack of devices usually leads to the lack of access. The other observation we have made in our school district is that when administrators lead a vision for Schoology, exciting and innovative progress is made.

I work at a regional education service center (RESC). We are a not-for-profit organization that provides services, consulting and professional development to schools and organizations. We also manage a system of public magnet schools. Our students and faculty - as well as administrators and parents - use Schoology to communicate, provide instruction and assess learning. School administrators and other employees at our RESC regularly use Schoology to manage projects and serve as a repository of resources and communication - this works well for committees and smaller departments. When trainers and specialists deliver professional development, we regularly enroll participants in a Schoology course to facilitate communication and share resources. This has replaced paper printouts in most of our trainings.
  • Schoology does a great job of managing communication - organizing classroom materials and workflows... that is, students and parents know where to get information for their courses. They have a place to turn in work (even when the work is completed in other productivity platforms like Office 365 or Google Apps). Students and parents have a regular place to see feedback from teachers on submitted work or in-class performance.
  • Schoology is a very flexible tool that can be "hacked" to serve several purposes beyond just learning management.
  • Schoology's enterprise customer support and free community groups are very responsive and helpful. In an odd way, I feel like their customer service is happy to hear about any bugs or service disruptions. They respond quickly and work to resolve issues. Schoology's community is managed to be informative and inviting. I often "pay things forward" by answering questions of new users because I felt so welcomed when I first started using the platform.
  • Schoology's design language / user experience is on the whole very clean and intuitive... "it just works, and makes sense." It's easy to teach and this leads to high / quick adoption rates.
  • I don't personally use their mobile app that much, but I've gotten lots of feedback from teachers (and second hand from their students) that they really like the mobile app.
  • Schoology as a company is very responsive... beyond their community and customer support they do a good job of messaging their road map for new features. They do a good job of listening to user feedback about new features and adjustments to existing ones.
  • While they currently have integration with Google Apps, drive, calendar, etc., tighter integration would be great. 2 specific examples would be 2-way syncing between Google and Schoology calendars. Additionally their Google Drive integration through the resource app desperately needs a search / sort / filter option.
  • There needs to be a way to aggregate student data / performance. Data visualization and analytics need to be available at the teacher, course, department, building and district levels.
  • A way for students to self assess or peer assess assignments, discussions and assessments would be great.
Schoology works best for districts when enterprise features are purchases. While Schoology is competitively priced, not all districts can afford it. In those cases, the free version can still be quite powerful but obviously would be harder to implement broadly across a large district.

Currently, Schoology is being used across our K-12 school district at all grade levels, and it is also the means by which we provide professional development in our district. For us, Schoology solved the problem of having a learning management system that was easy to use, simple to navigate, and accessible on various devices. In addition, it provided digital collaborative spaces where school and district teams could work together.
  • Schoology is extremely easy to use, and I think that's been the most common sentiment we've heard from our district users. We've had other learning management systems in the past, and we just couldn't get a wide level of adoption. The comfortable interface has appealed to diverse learners and needs.
  • Another strength Schoology has is its parent component. It is very important to us to have parent involvement in learning, both in face-to-face environments and digital learning environments. We have been able to involve parents in their child's learning in ways we never had been able to before.
  • Schoology's option of Groups in addition to Courses is another strength of the platform. We have internal teams, professional learning communities, parent groups, and student activity or sports groups who have been able to communicate and collaborate outside of a course structure. This has been a very popular option for our district. Courses are (of course) an important component of a learning management system, but we were surprised at the way Groups have been utilized across our domain.
  • Schoology's open API means that integration with existing systems is a possiblity, where other learning management systems don't necessarily have that potential. This is one area where our Information Systems Department has been very impressed and is currently working on ways to leverage the API for our needs.
  • Finally, the potential for global collaboration with other Schoology users, schools, or districts is a pretty amazing feature. Not only can we share content in a Public Resources area, but we can also collaborate using public groups or private groups/courses outside of our district. We hope to see even more collaboration between our students/teachers and other students from different cultures and countries as we move forward.
  • One area we'd like to see better functionality is with existing calendaring. The calendars that are built into courses and groups work well for assignments and events specific to those areas, but we also have district and school calendars that we'd like to import and use within the system. While you can import an existing calendar, it is a one-time import and not a live calendar feed. We can't use Schoology for some of our district events, but it would be nice if we could subscribe to them to at least have them visible in both systems (especially for districts using Google Calendar).
  • The ability to connect to Google Drive is important, but it could work better in Schoology. There is no search mechanism, and while it will bring up recently edited or created items in Google Drive, it would be much more efficient to provide search functionality when attaching Google files to items in Schoology.
  • The final thing I'd like to see is peer editing. My understanding is that this is on the road map, but we would like our students to have an opportunity to give peer feedback on assignments, if it's instructionally appropriate.
For us, it has been a very good solution for digital learning. Schoology has been well suited for our elementary classrooms as well as for adult learning, so it has been flexibly used across the board. We do have people using Google Classroom in conjunction with Schoology, and Schoology isn't a good solution for distributing files or templates in Google Drive in the way that Classroom is. However, for just about every other learning activity we've seen used in the classroom, it's been a fantastic platform.

I use Schoology to manage my classroom notes, assignments, and projects. It's an easy website to use to keep everything organized and a place to have discussions with my students. Currently, I am the only one using this while other teachers use Google Sites or Edmodo. It addresses the issue of making materials available to students.
  • Schoology does a good job of offering ways to organize classroom materials.
  • There are many ways to set up the gradebook to weight more on certain categories and set up future assignments to be visible at a certain date.
  • The website is great and the app is a nice compliment to it.
  • Other iPad apps work great with Schoology, such as Whiteboard. I can take notes on it during class and easily upload it to my class page via an update.
  • Sometimes the website goes down and its hard to upload documents.
  • I would like an improvement of the apps (both for android and the app store).
Schoology is great for a classroom. You need to figure out if you are using it to run everything in the classroom online (including grades) or just for materials.

Schoology is used as the digital interface for which students in the middle school can access a schedule of their assignments, retrieve digital copies of handouts/resources, or access links to resources for each class. It is used by the middle school as a whole for each of the core content classes. Students who may have forgotten to write down their homework or had lost an important copy of something to complete an assignment were able to login to Schoology and find both what they had for homework and when it was due as well as digital copies of any handouts, notes, study guides, etc. All categories are by chapter or topic.
  • Organized documents, files, links by topic in neat folders. Made it very easy for unorganized students to find what they need
  • Tracked due dates of assignments
  • Interface like Facebook presented the information in a format that was familiar to the age group. When I posted a "status" update, the students knew it was a reminder or change of information because of their experience with facebook
  • Link to Google Drive
  • Ability to check off when students have completed an assignment so that they may self-regulate
  • Share grades back with students
  • Make folders invisible (this way you can prepare items early yet not be seen by all)
  • Opportunity to copy folders from one year to the next. If I've created a folder with the many resources for a particular novel unit, it would be nice to be able to copy that from one year to the next without creating new page/folder
Schoology is well suited for classes such as Language Arts, Social Studies, and/or Math where many notes and handouts are taken and given. Organizing the handouts and resources into folders made the many PDFs approachable to students who could open the folder they needed to find what it was they were looking for.
