What is Schoology Learning?

Schoology, now a PowerSchool Unified Classroom product, is a learning management system (LMS). Schoology’s platform is built specifically for the needs of K-12 students, teachers, and administrators. Schoology aims to combine as many parts of the learning process as possible into a single platform. By doing this they aim to simplify the learning experience for students, parents, and teachers.

The Basic Package is free for instructors and includes features such as an Academic Activity Dashboard, Instructional Tools, and a Native Document Grader. The Enterprise Package includes the Basic Package and additional features such as Systemwide Administration, User Management, and Workload Planning.

PowerSchool acquired Schoology in late 2019.

Overview of Schoology Features

Schoology focuses on student mastery of learning objectives by offering a proficiency model of grading and traditional numeric grades. Through their online platform, it is simple to deliver assessments to students regardless of their location. Assessments are flexible and can be quick quizzes, locally-created benchmarks, or district-wide assessments.

Through Schoology’s built-in data and analytics, educators can determine what is working and what is not at several different levels. The reports generated give information at both the class and school level and can be used by teachers to determine how their students are doing, as well as administrators to ensure that all students school-wide are on track. Reports can be shared via a secure URL, and access is filtered based on staff permissions

Schoology aims to ensure effective communication between parents and educators. Teachers can send weekly digests about classroom activities. Parents can instantly access their students' grades to get an idea of their child’s full learning experience.

Per the vendor, Schoology is easy to use in combination with other learning tools and comes with over 200 native integrations. Educators can use said tools to quickly create assignments. Courses can be built from scratch, or educators can use Schoology’s content library that contains over 300 applications. Courses can be easily shared with other teachers or can be re-used across multiple academic years.

Collaboration is encouraged between teachers through the Public Groups pages on Schoology. These are community pages where educators can share ideas, ask questions and learn from each other.

Tailored Education Solutions

Schoology aims to create a highly tailored educational experience for students that ensures that they meet learning objectives in the way that works best for them. By offering personalized pacing, students can work through the material at the speed that suits their individual needs.

Educators also have the option of creating lessons that give students a choice in how they learn the material. Students can select the tasks that suit their learning style, and a grade for that lesson appears in the grade book, regardless of which task was selected.

Schoology also emphasizes the importance of collaboration between students, even in a remote learning environment. The Groups feature allows students to communicate and store resources about sports, clubs, etc. outside of their course modules.

Fieldcrest currently uses Schoology as a district wide Learning Management System (LMS). We switched to Schoology last year and I use Schoology for almost all of my course work. I teach using the flipped classroom model and Schoology's platform allows me to share my lecture videos, conduct assessments of student knowledge and understanding, to give assignments, and to provide communication with students and parents. All of my content is available to my students through Schoology 24/7, I can make it available in a variety of ways, and I can make updates in real time. Recently, Schoology's introduction of the Google Assignment App has me excited about our switch to Chromebooks. This app allows you to attach a Google Doc (say a study guide) as part of an assignment. When students open the assignment the document is copied, renamed, and added to their Google Drive. No more students opening or copying a new version of the document each time they go back to the assignment instead of to the copy they made but didn't actually rename like the directions stated. The document is 'tied' to the assignment and updates no matter where they work on it from (inside the assignment or through their Google Drive.) Still to come, a cleaner looking interface with differentiation for elementary students!
  • Google Assignment App - this is a game changer for schools using Google and Chromebooks but grading is a scrolling nightmare for teachers and not intuitive.
  • Open LMS - it integrates with outside apps and programs but they have done little to improve the functionality of the product.
  • New interfaces on the way - a cleaner look for all and an elementary version of the interface. This took YEARS longer than promised and looks completely different. They updated the user interface (UI) again for other users and now have some icons used for different features.
  • More question types coming for assessments including labeling. These are now available, but the promised equity with the old assessment feature has never happened. New users only get the new assessment and while it looks nice, it lacks many basic features and is a grading nightmare.
  • Options are available for assessment monitoring for schools and districts. All third-party paid apps unless you have Chromebooks.
  • Microsoft OneDrive Integration and Assignments.
  • Google Drive Integration
  • So many promised features have not been added as promised. Flaws in existing features have not been (and based on my experience with the highest levels of support and development) never will be.
  • Grading Google Drive Assignments is a scrolling nightmare. Assessments that have short answer/essay questions do not show up on your list of things that need to be graded.
  • Known pain points for teachers are never addressed. Support since they were bought by PowerSchool has become nothing but, "Huh, we will escalate that" and then escalated, then escalated again, then to the top level and nothing happens.
  • Updates to fix issues, forget about it. If you look at their roadmap for Schoology, it is all about integration with other products PowerSchool owns. Nothing on the roadmap was about fixing anything in Schoology outside of a new UI which simply changed the look slightly.
  • I wish I could move and resize pop-up editing boxes. I create complex and visual landing pages with hyperlinks for my students. I wish that box were able to be made bigger and many pop-up boxes cover information on the page that would be helpful when working in the box.
  • Settings and due dates for assessments are in two completely different places when creating them. One is in a tab in the content area, the other is in the creation "gear" menu. If both are not set correctly, your assessment will not work.
I'm a bit of a cynic; almost nothing is perfect, I supported Schoology, was an Ambassador, and Ambassador of the Year. However, my opinion of Schoology has changed since PowerchoolS bought it. Schoology no longer continues to work to become better and user-friendly. From a full 1:1 district to use by an individual instructor, there are multitudes of uses for Schoology. Some may think an LMS is not useful for the elementary level, but with its Google integration, Schoology provides a way to share Google or Microsoft content with students and to get content from them. For middle school to secondary, all content and assessments can be managed through Schoology in traditional, blended, or fully online environments. For elementary, a new interface is in the works geared to those levels, but basic course materials can be shared and housed in the system. Additionally, its ability to integrate apps and LTI content within its framework means improved ease of use for all students as they can stay within Schoology while accessing content outside of the platform. Assessment options are not increasing and those features are now only available with the additional $$ assessment management platform (AMP).

Schoology is used as a platform for giving assignments, scoring them, and providing feedback to students. All teachers in my school district are mandated to use it to keep track of student grades. There are benefits in general to electronic gradebooks over paper ones, of course, but that said, this system has so many problems it's hard to know where to begin.
  • allows teachers to upload Google docs, sheets, etc. as assignments
  • allows integration with our school's report card system (grades in gradebook are automatically imported to report cards for families)
  • allows different teachers to save and share materials by saving them to Resources
  • In general, the system is NOT intuitive and there is a lack of customization across all aspects of it. Far too much clicking is required for many tasks. Some examples follow...
  • When typing comments on assignment, the default is to NOT show the comments to students--for students to see, you must click a box before submitting and there is no way to change that setting.
  • There is no way to create a bank of frequently used comments (e.g. "This is plagiarized", "Good job!", "You need to edit more carefully", etc.), so the teacher must type comments manually for each assignment.
  • Once assignments are marked missing, late submissions are still marked missing and there is no automatic way to change this. Teachers must go in and manually remove the "missing" marks from any assignments submitted late. This is a huge hassle, considering our district does not want us to refuse late work.
  • In consideration of the movement towards mastery grading, there is no way to customize the value of a missing assignment; it can only be zero. Any equity-focused district encourages teachers NOT to count missing assignments as zeroes. The value of missing work was customizable in the Illuminate gradebook that my school previously used.
  • "Mark empty cells missing" (bulk feature) does not mean "all cells without a submission"; it means "all cells without a grade." You cannot easily mark multiple assignments missing at the same time without then going to manually remove the missing mark from those students who HAVE submitted something that you have not yet had time to grade.
  • There is no way to sort students by who has the most ungraded work, which would be very helpful in prioritizing.
  • If a student takes a quiz late, their score does NOT automatically populate. Teacher must go in to view the score and then manually enter it. This is incredibly annoying at a school with a high absence rate.
  • Assignments submitted late are just marked "late" instead of time-stamped and there is no way to sort late assignments by the order they were submitted. I do not want to grade the work of students who turned in everything the last week of the semester before those who only turned things in one day late.
  • The Bulk Edit feature does not allow you to change the lock date (last date an assignment will be accepted). Lock dates for assignments must be set and changed individually, which I learned the hard way.
  • My experience with the mobile app was so frustrating that I never use it. It would be amazing if I could grade student work from my phone, but it's totally confusing.
There HAVE to be better-designed learning management systems out there. My suspicion is that this company was the lowest bidder. I have been forced to use it for four years and I have seen few improvements during that time. Teachers are never asked for their input on the system or how to make it better, which is what brings me here. I literally have no idea whom to approach with these issues.

We use Schoology district wide for our students. All students and staff use this and we have found it to be a powerful tool especially during these remote learning months. The teachers have adopted it and are happy to have a product that works well. Without Schoology, I'm not sure how we would have successfully gotten through the distance learning process.
  • Allows students and staff to work in one place
  • All systems we use filter through Schoology making it a very useful tool
  • Students have taken to it very well and have enjoyed the user friendly feel
  • The single sign on piece needs work
  • The use of additional apps would be great
This was extremely helpful for the distance learning with our elementary students. It created a place to have all of our k-5 staff and students to work and collaborate. This allowed the teachers to focus on teaching and not the technology or the tools we use. I'm grateful that we had a system that allowed for this.

Our school system adopted Schoology as our Learning Management System a few years ago. At first, it was piloted at a few select schools, then all schools were encouraged to adopt the platform. Now, it is the preferred LMS for our very large school system. It is used in a K-12 public education setting in more than 100 schools.
  • Customer Service is amazing. If there is something that doesn't see to work, the customer service department is there to help! The help and support page is comprehensive.
  • It is easy to embed various programs, web site and apps into this one LMS platform. This makes if very easy to customize.
  • Improvements and modifications are constantly being made. The company stays ahead of current trends.
  • Organization of courses and groups is easy, with many an endless amount of possibilities available for creation.
  • While this product constantly seeks to make improvements, certain features need tweaking. As educators enroll in various courses, these course tend to accumulate. If the educator is not an administrator of the course, it is next to impossible to get out.
  • Switching from one course/group to another course/group takes several steps. Not always easy to find the course/group needed.
Schoology is a learning management system that is designed for K-12 schools. In my personal experience as an elementary school educator, students in grades 2-5 can easily use this LMS. However, it is not as primary friendly for our young K-1 students, who rarely use the program. At times, the program can be daunting to teaches who do feel as confident in their own tech skills, but with support, it is very usable.

We are a two high school district that uses Schoology as our LMS. Currently, teachers utilize Schoology to house all of their classrooms needs digitally, as well as design and develop more engaging blended learning scenarios. Students use Schoology to access their classroom and homework, complete assignments beyond the normal school hours, collaborate and share. Administratively, we also use Schoology to send out notices and reminders and keep staff and students in the loop. Schoology has helped us in a number of key areas as we continue to shift the educational paradigm and create more personalized learning situations.
  • Schoology organizes resources is an easy-to-understand and design layout. With this, student work and assignments are no longer lost in the "shuffle" of the school day.
  • Schoology works well with many other apps and programs such as Google Docs, and uses an integrated LTI app so that users can embed other programs such as Thinglink, Quizlet, Padlet, Smore, and many more.
  • Schoology is always improving. Since implementing Schoology we have had the benefit to see a number of key new additions be added to the platform including LockDown Quizzes with Respondus, the AMP and Mastery Learning feature, the Portfolio feature, and the upcoming enhanced Google Docs integration.
  • One feature I'd like to see added is the option to individually assign an entire folder of contents to a particular student. As of now, each separate assignment can be individually assigned, but more often than not, teachers need to send multiple materials and it would be easier to open a folder and share.
Schoology is well suited for blended learning, personalized learning, and gamification in education. With the multitude of features included as well as the various programs that work well within Schoology, teachers and schools have at their disposal a plethora of reliable and engaging tools to increase student engagement and flip education from the traditional format to a seamlessly tech-driven one that students feel comfortable with.

Schoology is being used as our LMS (Learning Management System) of choice. We use Schoology in order to provide virtual spaces for students to learn and engage in very personalized settings. Schoology becomes very useful when used in very tech-rich environments, as it helps educators keep all online tools in one place, and helps manage student resources, work, and data in one place. Furthermore, Schoology has allowed our district to provide classes for not just students, but also other teachers to provide enriching professional development. It has also encouraged many of our educators to connect via the available professional learning networks (pln's) available in the open groups.
  • Schoology provides students personalized experiences.
  • It allows students to keep resources and school materials available online, at any time.
  • It provides students opportunities to engage in online tasks and discussions in a very engaging way.
  • Schoology is very accessible, with a friendly interface, and provides mobile apps that are easy to use.
  • Easy for teachers to learn to use, and provides multiple opportunities to teachers, depending on their level of knowledge.
  • Best way to get teams of teachers to collaborate in groups or courses, and to share work and assignments.
  • Fantastic way to gather data on students and their performance.
  • They could provide faster updates in terms of changes to the system.
  • It could use a better way to keep track of popular teacher requests in terms of a "wish list" of items to change or update.
Schoology is by far very effective for all education settings and provides opportunities for learning and connecting that is unlike any other platform that I have been able to use. It is adequate enough to provide a learning environment for students in upper elementary all the way to 12th grade, and even for adults. Schoology may not be the best option for lower elementary, as students may not find it friendly for their needs.

Four years ago our District was in search of a single Learning Management System to use. At that point in time, our teachers were using whatever LMS they preferred. During this time we noticed that our student needed consistency. Talking with one student, he had to work with 7 different LMS's to get class information or turn in assignments. Through a year of research, our team (admin, teachers, and students) decided on Schoology as our main LMS. Schoology offers us an easy way to deploy information to students in a variety of methods. It allows our students to turn in homework one way. Schoology had an app that works well with our 1:1 iPad environment. Schoology just fits with everything we wanted to do. We are in year 3 and can say that 100% of our Secondary teachers and 90% of our Primary teachers use Schoology on a daily basis.
  • Students like it.
  • Works well on Mobile Devices
  • Easy to train teachers how to use.
  • Not all features that Schoology offers work through the app
  • Need more reporting tools
For a district that is 1:1 this is one of the best LMS's out there.

Schoology is our current Learning Management System (LMS) for the entire school district. We utilize it to deliver course content and announcements to our staff and students.
  • Organizing coursework in folders keeps my students focused
  • Giving assessments on Schoology saves grading time and allows students to receive feedback in a timely manner
  • It is difficult to get features modified by user suggestion
  • Mobile app does not have all the features as using Schoology on a computer does
Great tool for organizing digital content in K-12 education.

I arrived in this school district to find that they did not have a Learning Management System. I have experience with a handful of other companies, and knew that in order to achieve the goals we have, that a strong LMS would be a vital component of our program. I looked at a handful of companies but quickly knew that Schoology was the right choice for Salem. First, it is aligns with Standards Based Practices which Salem is adopting K-12. Secondly, the user interface is very easy to understand and use. Other reasons were the strong mobile apps, the LTI integrations with apps such as Nearpod, CK-12 and others, and the Google Drive integration. We began a pilot program in the spring of 2018 and purchased the Enterprise district level program in the summer. We now have almost 1000 students and over 200 staff using it daily, and are also leveraging it to support our new teacher induction program and other professional development programs over the summer.
  • Ease of use
  • Mobile App
  • Social Media connections
  • Ability to individually assign folders within courses
  • Continue to strengthen the assessments, including test banks
Schoology is well suited across the K-12 spectrum. 3rd grade teachers are leveraging the discussions feature and the ease of LTI connections with 3rd party apps. I think Schoology can be well suited to all age groups, including Higher ed and adult learners.

Schoology is being used by my entire school district. Different groups have different needs and uses for Schoology. Schoology allows teachers to more effectively reach students, differentiate learning, and analyze data derived from student work.
  • I enjoy that it has an app so my students can securely message me and it reaches my phone instantly.
  • I can keep my home bound/ sick students up to date on what we are doing in class.
  • The test bank function cuts down on the amount of cheating during a test because students will never have the same questions in the same order.
  • I can create interactive and differentiated assignments to reach students at all levels.
  • I love that Schoology grades my assessments for me and then puts the grade in my gradebook for me saving me tons of time.
  • I would like to be able to upload videos that I have made on my computer instead of putting my videos on YouTube and linking them on Schoology.
  • I would like the ability for students to graph equations on assessments.
I think Schoology is great for all types and levels of classrooms. I use it to help me teach math and I also use it for my swim team. Obviously I don’t encourage all of your class to be on Schoology during class time, but it’s a great supplement for out of class time and to supplement learning in class.

Our organization allows individual programs to use the Schoology (Basic) platform as our Learning Management System. It is not used organization-wide, but several programs use it across our multiple campuses. I manage the courses and content for a Digital Media and Video Production vocational program for high school juniors and seniors. Schoology has provided a free utility for creating assignments, distributing and collecting classroom materials, tracking student grades, proctoring quizzes and exams, documenting classroom attendance, and maintaining contact/feedback with parents/guardians. This has allowed us to migrate services that were spread across multiple platforms into one single platform, allowing instructors to focus more on in-class interaction than classroom management.
  • Gradebook — provides a detailed breakdown of student grades, viewable by class or by the individual student.
  • Integration with other services — Schoology makes a priority to integrate with other common teaching tools (such as EduCanon, TurnItIn, YouTube, Google Drive, and OneDrive).
  • Assignment Distribution and Collection — Schoology allows instructors to distribute and collect assignments digitally, removing the "dog ate my homework" excuse from students. In conjunction with Google Drive / Doc integration, distributing assignments is made easy.
  • Some functionality blocked by paywall — Schoology offers two levels, Basic and Premium. Basic is available to anyone for free, allowing access to all of the core functionality (building Courses, assignments, gradebooks, etc). Premium offers additional services at an organization-wide level with a subscription.
  • Slow Updates / Upgrades for Free Users — While Schoology has rolled out several great features for Premium users (such as the more advanced "Assessments" assignment mode), free users rarely see any earth-shattering upgrades.
  • Clunky Assignment Creation Utilities — Creating assignments can be cumbersome at times; the assignment creation interface allows basic word processing or HTML options. Unfortunately, this can cause some issues when trying to format text or import objects into the assignment pages. For example, text may not change colors, font sizes, or styles despite selecting new text options. Formatting can slightly change after creating the assignment.
Overall, Schoology provides a solid learning management system on par with Blackboard. Schoology is best utilized in environments where students have 1:1 access to computers, laptops, or smart devices for extended periods of the class period. With mobile apps also available, instructors can choose to allow students to use their personal devices to access Schoology functionality for in-class discussions, assessments, or updates.

Schoology is also best suited for secondary education purposes (8-12 grade) and higher education, as much of the social interaction and assessment functionality may be difficult for younger students to utilize and/or navigate. However, primary education instructors may find Schoology to be beneficial for digital record keeping, tracking grades, and parent/teacher communications.

Schoology is used district-wide amongst 13 schools. We use it to collaborate between colleagues and students. It has been very helpful to coordinate lesson plans and upload documents for students to work on.
  • It does scheduled posts and assignments really well.
  • It links to our Google Drive seamlessly.
  • It connects to our LMS very well, which makes grading very easy to do.
  • The interface on the iPad/iOS app could be smoother.
  • The connection to Google Drive could be more user-friendly.
It’s perfect for an upper elementary or secondary grade level environment. It’s not super helpful at the intermediate/lower elementary level. It’s a little difficult for students to navigate.

Schoology is used by all teachers at our school. It allows us to streamline student and parent communication, as well as innovate on ways students are able to learn and demonstrate their learning. From technophobes to early adopters, all of our team members have embraced Schoology because of its easy user interface and intuitive nature.
  • The streamlined grading system that tracks assignments and standards mastery -- this is the most intuitive, organized grading system I have ever used.
  • Engaging student and staff discussions -- students and staff jump right in due to the ease of use -- and they are easy to grade!
  • App integration -- it is easy to incorporate the G Suite and other applications.
  • Chat -- we wish Schoology could have a chat program like Facebook.
  • School-level control -- we wish we could push out a grading scale to all teachers automatically for organization.
Schoology is excellent -- we had immediate buy-in from staff because of the ease of use. Our early adopters were able to customize Schoology and come up with exciting connections to outside apps. Our students became fluent with Schoology within a month and use it to communicate with teachers. Teachers are also able to communicate seamlessly with parents.

Schoology is used by my district as our learning management system. Using an LMS is optional this year. I am the tech coach in my building as well as a teacher so I am full on Schoology and LOVE IT!! This is my class hub - kids know to go there to find everything they need for the day! I currently teach using a blended learning model so the kids have folders set up to work through. Using the folder feature allows me to easily differentiate instruction - I have kids working on different sections all at once - and class runs smoothly! Schoology easily integrates many apps. This allows me to assign a video to watch from youtube or give assignments through Schoology as well as integrated apps like ck12.org - all without making students leave the Schoology platform! Schoology has allowed me to operate a paperless classroom for both outgoing and incoming material. I can grade assignments on my laptop, phone, or iPad while I have a few minutes without having to lug around papers! Schoology is a great tool that helps me organize my class and use my time effectively!
  • Easily organizes materials for students and teachers with the ability to reuse those materials from year to year without recreating them!
  • Easily allows my students to work at their own pace without a lot of work on my end to differentiate instruction!
  • Creates a learning hub where all of their materials are distributed as well as submitted (if you decide to go paperless)
  • While Schoology currently integrates Khan academy videos into their platform they do not have that option for Khan academy activities/assignments
  • Syncing issues with powerschool gradesbook - sometimes it is inconsistent as to whether it is automatic or if I need to sync the grades manually
Schoology can be used in all types of classroom models from traditional to flipped learning! The only issue I see where it would be less beneficial is if students don't have access to devices (laptop, Chromebook, phone, iPad, etc) and wifi.

Schoology is being used as our districts LMS. As a high school teacher, I use schoology to blend my classroom. I deliver course content through schoology, have discussions and accept student work. I can grade through schoology too. For me, schoology is the one resource I use daily in my classroom.
  • Allows me to provide instant, meaning, individualized feedback for students.
  • Gives me a platform to share links, documents and discussions with my students.
  • Saves me time when grading quizzes and tests.
  • They are working to improve their assessment questions which will be amazing!
  • Sharing discussions across multiple sections of a course would be nice.
Great for education. Can be used to stay connected to students, parents and other educators.

Schoology is my school district's LMS. It is used across our entire organization, from daily interactions with students, to staff training, to dissemination of the curriculum in every subject area. It addresses the need to share materials across all levels (elementary, middle, and high school) along with sharing student data and supervision between teachers, administrators, counselors, monitoring teachers, and other staff. Everything from discussion to assessment can be done with little effort.
  • As a classroom teacher, I can assign projects to a whole class, a small group, or a single student, and manage all the responses from a single dashboard.
  • I can allow a monitoring teacher access to a student's work and discussion answers so we can work together to meet the needs of each student.
  • I can grade effectively using rubrics linked to state standards, giving us another tool to help determine content mastery in our students.
  • I would like to see a way that student data is preserved if a student is pulled from my class and put in someone else's class. Right now, that data disappears unless you add the student back in to the class they left.
  • I'd like to see an easier way to edit an assignments common to multiple planning periods. Even if you create a resource or assignment in the Resources section, when you share it out to other classes, you have to go in and make any changes in EACH class.
  • The app allows students to submit discussion answers and assignments, but the app looks very different from the online site. This leads to some confusion when students are trying to submit assignments.
It is great for blended learning with students in upper elementary through high school. It is easy to use for students and teachers. For English as a Second Language learners, it is a great way to show completed examples. I can even assign something different than the rest of the class. I don't know where it would be inappropriate.

Our public school district utilizes Schoology for students across grades K-12 for student learning, grade posting, and information sharing. All of the teachers and administrators in our schools utilize Schoology to post and communicate with students and parents throughout the school year, and the information includes anything from specific classroom assignments to school-wide announcements.
  • Schoology empowers students to track and monitor their progress within all of their courses.
  • Schoology bridges communication gaps between parents and classroom teachers.
  • Schoology elevates the learning environment for classroom teachers by allowing them to digitally transform student assignments.
  • The iOS based app for Schoology does not include many of the features that are available through the browser-based version.
  • Some of the reporting features available through Schoology are antiquated, making grading data difficult to interpret.
  • Users don't have the options to set their own default settings, making information curation timely in some cases.
Schoology is well suited for classroom teachers who implement a digital learning environment and need a platform to post and share specific resources and school documents for student consumption. Schoology should be implemented as a way to redesign a classroom learning environment. Teachers who are looking for a system to simply organize grades or store files should find another program because Schoology works best if students download and share information back within the learning management system.

Schoology is a Learning Management System. Our system is public education and use if they choose. Although it is designed for education with a robust assessment, grading, and connectivity to other modules, it has been quite helpful in training and professional development for adults. The flexibility of this platform makes accessibility a breeze. Learning, sharing, or doing can be available as needed, whether it be at 2 in the afternoon or 2 in the middle of the night.
  • Easy - The platform is easy to use for the educator as well as the learner. Everything is in one place. The interface is pleasant to view, to use, to communicate, to track, as well as many other things. So many good things in Schoology! As you can tell, I'm a big fan.
  • Assessment - The assessment is the most robust I have ever used. There are many different types of questions that can be used as well as embedding documents, websites, materials, video, etc. into the assessment. Learners can get immediate feedback. Another piece I regularly enjoy are the question banks. You can use ones others have developed as well as creating your own.
  • Communication - There are numerous areas for communication. The Update feature allows for one way (educator to learner) or interactive (bi-directional) communication. You can have discussions in real time or as the users have the opportunity. You can also message between users.
  • Shared Resources - AMAZING... the use of the Resources section has been a life saver in decreasing the quantity of work required to collaborate with fellow teachers.
  • Linking Accounts - At my school, we link our accounts and are able to help each other out whenever someone needs help.
  • Professional Groups - There are many groups of professionals with different areas of interest. You can either join a group that meets your needs or an individual or organization can create a group. There are options to make your groups anywhere from private to public.
  • Apps - Many educational apps are available that work right inside of Schoology. In particular, Google Drive, Google Assignments, and Quizlet are my go to apps. Playposit is also available and so much more.
  • Connecting with other professionals using Schoology - This is great. You can meet others from anywhere... inside of your organization to across the country to anywhere in the world.
  • Rubrics - Oh so easy to use. I can create my own or use rubrics other teachers have shared. The rubric also allows a direct connection to state and national standards. You can then follow students achievements within the standards.
  • Printing assessments could use improvement. There is little flexibility of the output and uses a great deal more paper than needed.
  • The Updates has little formatting available. I usually need to create what I want in a Google document so that the formatting is better and then cut and paste. That is an unnecessary step. Schoology should make it possible to use html code to format an update and add pictures or video.
  • Google Drive integration is good, but I can't control the way it sorts documents and folders. It can be awkward to find something in Drive that I'm looking for.
Schoology is extremely well suited for ANY educational environment including any sort of professional development or corporate training. Groups with a common interest in something can also use Schoology to share information, documents, and experiences.

Schoology is used at my corporation by ALL teachers. It is a requirement for each classroom. We are a 1 to 1 school and this helps our teachers and students stayed organized.
  • Schoology keeps all the lessons organized into units for the students to find.
  • Schoology is able to sync all assignments from Schoology to PowerSchool.
  • Schoology allows a teacher to upload pre-made tests so the students can take the test and Schoology will auto grade it.
  • One of the test examples is called ordering. It is hard to grade and auto grading doesn't work real well on this question type.
  • It is hard to submit homework questions without creating a test/quiz and telling students it is only homework.
I have used three LMS solutions and Schoology is by far the best. Syncing of your grades is a huge time saver. Having a resource to "hold" your lessons, unit etc. is great time saver also. I don't use the grade book for any other reason than to sync to PowerSchool. If Schoology was a full-service SIS also, that would help in reducing the number of programs we use.

Our district just finished it's third year of full enterprise implementation with Schoology at the secondary level. We use it as our Learning Management System.

This product has made our 1:1 iPad implementation more effective by giving our teachers and students an efficient way to manage digital workflow, as well as allow our teachers to differentiate and provide varied digital assessments and resources to their students.
  • Ease of use. Very intuitive interface.
  • Discussion
  • Better ways to integrate digital content from other platforms. (Using the embed code should work, but often requires users to click the open out of Schoology tab, which is small and can be easily overlooked.)
It is perfect for a secondary classroom in any subject area to use as as the digital hub for the room. It may also be appropriate for upper elementary, but there are other apps that would work better for younger studnets.

We use Schoology PreK-12 as our learning management system. It is a great tool and can be used at all these levels in dynamic ways. It is adaptable to the different needs of each level and works well for staff in not only managing classroom resources but also creating an online learning environment.
  • Adaptable to multiple grades.
  • Easy to use.
  • Keeps student data safe.
  • IOS App and Web-based access have some different functionality.
Great for PreK-12 schools.

Schoology is being used in grades 6-12 across the district. We are just finishing our first year of implementation. We had regular meetings with our Technology Support Teacher who guided us through some modules she created to help us better understand Schoology.
  • Schoology's app is very easy to use. You are able to grade right in the app which is convenient for busy teachers.
  • Schoology's online assessment builder is great for English Language Learners because you can create assessments with rich text, which means you can incorporate videos, pictures and other tools that may help the student feel successful.
  • The ability to collaborate with teacher's all over the country is wonderful. It opens your eyes to new and different ways of teaching!
  • The Schoology app does not allow you to view students' blogs.
  • Would like to see Schoology add the ELPA21 standards for ELLs into the program.
  • Would like to have ProgressBook and Schoology talk to each other so grades would not need to be imported.
Schoology is well suited for assessment creation while it could do a better job with blogging.

We are using Schoology for our senior and junior school as our main source of communication for students, parents, and teachers. We have class enrollments that allow for students to submit assignments, use external tools with assignments, online formative quizzes, discussion forums, storing resources for students, links to sites for students, calendar integration, portfolio storage, email communications and push-notifications on the app.
  • This tool allows for parents, students and teachers to stay organized and connected to the learning environment.
  • Communications is clear and accurate.
  • External tools can be integrated such as Google Drive, One Drive, Turn-it-in and blackbaud and other SIS integration.
  • They are very receptive to changes and implement changes based on user requests quickly.
Well suited to school environments with classes and groups that need spaces to collaborate and interact.

Schoology is currently being used across the entire district. We are a one to one district with iPads in grades K-8 and laptops at the high school level. Schoology is the learning management system that I am using as a teacher to distribute and gather assignments from my students.
  • Schoology allows for personalized instruction of materials for students without others knowing that someone is getting something different.
  • Allows students without a voice (too scared to speak in the classroom) an opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas.
  • Opens communication for all students,
  • From a management aspect, I create on the web but my students are using the app. The amazing feature of using badges is not accessible from the app. I believe that this will be coming in the future. Our workaround is to log into the web version to see the badges.
  • When able to individualize instruction I want the ability to give an entire folder to a specific students. Currently at this point I do not have that ability.
Any school that is one to one should be using a learning management system. It cleans up the clutter and allows all students to be able to access their materials without fear of losing them.

Schoology is a Learning Management System being used by my school district. It is a system designed to be used by staff and students. The platform is built for collaboration. Educators from around the world can create and share resources. It can be used to organize information, post assignments, assess and interact with students.
  • Collaboration:
  • Schoology allows staff to share resources and ideas. The LMS allows for the formation of groups that are tailored to a specific area. Educators are able to post discussion questions, build a digital file cabinet of resources and learn from others in their school or from around the world.
  • Assignments:
  • Teachers are able to develop courses that address the needs of 21st century learners. From scheduling and assessing assignments to differentiating the curriculum, Schoology allows you to design a course that is just right for your students.
  • Usage:
  • Schoology is designed to be user friendly. The layout of the LMS is simple and strait-forward. Looking for help and answers to your questions is part of the user friendly interface.
  • Schoology Functions:
  • Tools built by Schoology work like a dream. Tools for assessing students and providing feedback are some of the best features of the LMS. However, Schoology has a small list of "apps" that can integrate with it's grade book function. Allowing more 3rd party apps to access grade book would provide teachers with more ways to engage and assess students.
Schoology is a great tool for engaging 21st-century learners. It is designed to differentiate instruction. The site is easy to navigate for elementary school students and is robust enough to tackle the demands of higher education. However, it is difficult took to utilize in the K-2 setting.
