What is Planview ProjectPlace?

ProjectPlace is the collaborative work management solution from Planview that brings teams together to get work done. Whether a team is down the hall or on the other side of the globe, ProjectPlace aims to provide everything needed to set direction, communicate, execute tasks, track progress, and ultimately achieve goals. A key value proposition is to be one tool designed to work together rather than a collection of point solutions.

The vendor says the the product is built with teams of all size and complexity in mind, from virtual teams of five to entire global enterprises with tens of thousands of active users. ProjectPlace can be started in minutes and scales as new team members join. Since work types vary, ProjectPlace is flexible to fit the job at hand – traditional projects, roadmaps or unstructured work where groups just need to “get stuff done”.

Creating a project plan and commanding project workstreams is very easy with Planview Projectplace functionalities. A highly collaborative project planning solution with incredible work and project management tools centralized in one place. Easy to visualize workflows and project progress using online Kanban boards and Gantt charts with excellent dashboard and project reporting capabilities.
  • Centralized work and project management tools
  • Collaborative project planning tool
  • Easy to visualize project progress and flow of the work
  • User-friendly tool and easy to get started even by new users
  • Clear project roadmaps to view and manage
  • No missing features or functionalities
Planview Projectplace provides excellent collaborative project planning and engagements with the best project management tools to get work and projects done easily. Online visualization functionalities allow easy tracking of project progress, identifying top projects and underperforming ones, and tries to find the bottleneck cause of the whole problem.

We use Planview Projectplace to manage traditional waterfall and SCRUM projects. It's used throughout the organization and helps to centralize project work. Most employees are in different geographical locations, so it makes tracking project work easier. We use English language only.
  • The boards are very easy to use to track project work.
  • It's easy and quick to create workspaces for a team.
  • Creating and managing tasks is easy.
  • Bidirectional connection with PPM Pro.
  • More control of font colors and the ability to bold text on cards.
  • More control over email notifications.
It has been great for managing traditional projects and sprints. Once the pandemic started, we started it using it much more.

Projectplace is being used across multiple divisions and global-operating companies to manage our R&D projects.
  • Document storage.
  • Kanban boards.
  • Conversations.
  • Projectplace completion of tasks has to be closed on multiple levels and don't automatically close the task in PPM Pro.
  • Add a "due this month" option in Boards, sorting by the due date. I would like to see not only what is overdue and due in the next two weeks.
  • Finished tasks still sort as overdue on the boards even though they are finished.
Projectplace is well suited as a tool to support quick project huddles for teams as it allows clear tracking and accountability of assigned tasks. I am less likely to use it when the project task list is overly detailed because it seems to work better in cases where the boards can be kept clean and at a high level.

We no longer use Planview Projectplace, we switched to Atlassian JIRA Solutions. Only one language was used, English, and in one department which was a small test group of developers. Only one location within the world and within the organization was used in the trial, as it was being tested as a demonstration.
  • Large amount of features and reporting tools
  • Many different ways to see your tasks and data
  • Zoom integration
  • Overall layout is too bland and hard to navigate
  • Dated looking compared to more refined/newer, simpler tools
  • The document collaboration isn't "smart"
Planview Projectplace is well suited for large, remote teams that require large amounts of collaboration. That collaboration could be meetings, shared tasks, documents etc. However, [I feel] other tools have better integration with our software suite, tools such as Jira have been easier to implement alongside Google suite applications and other 3rd party reporting tools.

Planview Projectplace is specifically designed for Portfolio and Resource management, as opposed to only manage single projects, so it mostly makes sense if you are a company with enough programs running in parallel. It was used as part of our selection process to update our project methodology and better serve multiple customers. Because multiple offices over the world and various languages are used, as well as significant differences in project sizes, we needed to have a very simple yet effective solution to manage it all.
  • It has every basic feature you'd expect from a portfolio solution
  • Strong document management (tracking, security, collaboration, etc.)
  • Easy drilldown and dependencies analysis across projects
  • Pricing - the PPM market is saturated at a bargain price, and Projectplace does not offer anything unique
  • In the end, it was too simple for us and did not fit with agile frameworks such SAFe
  • Very limited API capabilities makes it difficult to integrate the tool with your technology stack, and even standard 3rd-party solutions such as Zoom took months before getting released
Planview Projectplace definitely makes sense if you've been using their solutions in the past years so that you don't have to spend much on change management and training. Other than that, it does offer all the features you would expect from a PPM tool in a relatively simple way. However, considering the price per user and the number of well-priced competitors on the market (both at Enterprise and SME level), it makes it really difficult to invest in Projectplace as new customer.

Far as I know, it is used all across the business, with multiple teams, countries, and languages.
  • Great board tool gives visibility and helps prioritizing the tasks.
  • Perfect for collaboration with geographically spread team.
  • Not able to move cards to different projects.
  • Report generation is limited.
Perfect for geographically spread team, or whenever collaboration is needed.
Great for agile teams, not as much for traditional waterfall teams; it does have a GANTT, but it is limited compared to tools like MS Project.

  • Introduced a common tool and language
  • Made everyone a “PM”
  • Universally adopted across IT for all projects > 100 hours
  • Portfolio views enable cross-departmental project visibility
  • Teams now organize and collaborate on “non-projects” such as event management, personnel recruiting, operational maintenance, personal “to do” lists, etc.
  • It's flexible. Can be used effectively for such things as simple as a personal to-do list, to a complex, multi-phased project, be it waterfall or agile.
  • It's easy. Minimal training is required to get users up to speed and using it.
  • It's mobile and social. The mobile apps are very good and work seamlessly with the social collaboration features inherent to the tool.
  • Account administration could use some work. Does not afford the detailed data or knobs and levers to manage the account at a granular level. For example, the inability to assign departments to external (non-account) project members.
  • New features get rolled out fairly frequently, but sometimes with only partial functionality and with little fanfare or supporting documentation.
Projectplace is ideal for enterprises or departments that seek a common tool for organizing and reporting on their projects and operational endeavors. It is a great place to "get stuff done". It is not well suited for more mature organizations that rely on detailed metrics and dashboards, nor is it intended for use as a resource management system.
