I looked at several different vendors, then did a POC bake-off between the Pure Storage FlashArray and Nimble Storage AF series flash array. It was very close on performance, but Pure was easier to set up, manage, and maintenance was non-disruptive.

Fusion-IO is very expensive per TB and limited to host you can connect. Pure Storage might not be as fast but its ease of use, along with compression and dedupe make up for it.

Pure had a better cost offering and better sales process than the vendors above. They were also ranked higher on independent research such as Gartner which made the decision to go with Pure much easier.

Although more expensive, the FlashArray's performance, dedupe, simplicity of configuration, and support all blow the other arrays out of the water.
I have had nothing but pleasant experiences with the techs at Pure Storage, and they've been plenty helpful and supportive (both the techs and our dedicated engineers). Our experience with the FlashArray has been nothing but pleasant.

NetApp, which is/was the market leader. This is a good system in their own right, but there are two areas where Pure Storage FlashArray beats them all hands-down! First is management. The software interface for management and provisioning is cleaner and doesn't make one jump through complicated processes to get from point A to point B. Second is support. It is just outstanding in every way.

Pure delivers ease of use

It was easier to use but has fewer features. When the selection process was started, the NetApp was was still very difficult to use. The console for Pure won over the team. From a speed perspective, all of the FlashArrays are fast enough for our infrastructure and applications.

Why we switched to Pure

At first, they most of our selection criteria but were missing some key components. We could use them for specialized deployments but not shared systems. They worked with us and added the components we required and we now are moving all storage needs to Pure Storage systems. Their service team is way ahead of the others we evaluated and have done nothing but improve since we moved to Pure.

The performance of the Pure arrays is better but there is a difference in products so it is not really a fair comparison since the other arrays have some flash and some slower drives. However, we have had nothing but good experiences when dealing with support on upgrades and drive replacements.

  • Nimble
We liked the full flash array solution that Pure offered, its performance was ideal for our use cases. However, the biggest factor (90%) of the decision to purchase Pure was that the Pure arrays came bundled with our core application server upgrade. Without this consideration we probably would have gone with Nimble, a "good enough", solution.

Pure Storage FlashArray was selected for its ease of use. Aside from the GUI not being the most intuitive when you first get introduced to it, it holds up to that reputation. I do, however, enjoy other vendors approach to no expansion shelves. In the end, that ends up giving you more compute power to push those SSD's to their potential and not overgrowing the system.

When comparing Pure Storage options to other major vendor's products (in as much of an apples to apples manner as possible), the Pure solution provides much greater value and return to our business.
