We use QAD from Item creation all the way to Balance Sheet / Income Statement. In distribution, we use it for sales order process, purchasing process, incoming quality and inventory management. In manufacturing, we use it for BOM , Routing and MRP. In finance, we use it for costing, AR, AP and GL. QAD is used by every department of our organization.
  • Good in inventory Mgmt, Incoming quality mfgt, physical count.
  • Good in Order to Cash process, Purchasing ,
  • Good in MRP , Routing, Product Costing.
  • Good in AR, AP, GL = Finance.
Cons
  • Latest version has all new features which were missing in old versions.
QAD is well suited for auto suppliers, medical industry , consumer goods - mainly any company which has make to stock process.
  • ROI - very high with QAD.
  • Yearly maintenance cost is very low.
  • Support is very good from the QAD customer service team, knowledge base web site.
  • Very quick to implement the system.
I have used JD Edwards and Syteline.

JD Edwards is very expensive in terms of licensing cost , maintenance. QAD is very cheap.

Currently, we have 2 resources inhouse ( one - Techno-functional and another - Functional - Supply Chain). Techno-Functional resource is well versed with Functional knowledge as well as Programming skillset, Unix/Linux scripts etc. With 2 resource we are able to run the show ( manufacturing facility with 130 users). On need basis, we use external consultants ( DBA etc).
  • Cost
  • User friendly
  • Strong stability - no issue with database or os.
Easy to use, zero or minimum cost to maintain the database (DBA etc) , no issue with OS ( Linux), stable database.

QAD is used as a main objective in our operations, from the production floor level to the corporate level.
  • The QAD Enterprise application is great, we only started using this application a few years ago. The Master Scheduling Workbench has been a great improvement to our daily operations.
  • The Web-based QAD Supplier Portal has also been implemented recently in our company and has been a huge help to our purchasing and materials department.
  • The QAD support that we receive has helped our company grow and is a major asset in upcoming projects.
Cons
  • QAD web-based supplier portal, there is an option to flag emails to the suppliers, however when the system is updated every 2 hours these emails regenerate and are sent to the suppliers again. At this time we have not been told of any fixes for this issue.
QAD is well suited for any company that values its organization of inventory, reporting, and overall operational organization.

The organization used QAD as an ERP system to manage the inventory of components, current builds, and finished goods. We also used it to track current orders of raw materials and field inventory. We also used it to track cost of product and scrap costs for the finance department. It was used across the operations part of the business (supply chain, manufacturing, and sales). The business problems that QAD addresses are inventory management, costs held up in inventory (from raw components to finished goods), supplier management, and financial management. I personally used QAD to manage manufacturing scrap rates and tackled high costs operations where we had high-cost scraps.
  • Inventory management
  • Supplier management
  • Data dump for analytics
  • Customization of your data collection
Cons
  • Could be faster when filtering large data sets
  • Need a way of automating analytics. I used to save a query search to do my daily data dump and analyze in Excel. It would be nice if this could be easily automated.
If you're setting up operations where you have to manage manufacturing builds from raw components to finished goods, I would recommend QAD. It's nice to have subassemblies part numbers for your builds and enter in the number of accepted quantities and rejects. QAD is very helpful if you have a lot of parts floating around. I would not buy QAD if you only have to manage less than ~20 parts... just use Excel.

  • QAD has made it easier for the operations engineering team to narrow down processes where reject rate relates to the highest cost so that they can solve those issues first.
  • QAD has made it easy for the production team to print work orders and track daily builds. This saves a lot of time from the old method of tracking in Word docs or Excel.
  • Sometimes QAD needs a lot of maintenance on the back end so we had to hire a full time employee to manage the data systems.
QAD is very easy to use once it's set up. It's basically an Excel sheet that can handle a lot more data points and faster. It's nice that you can dump the data stored in QAD to a CSV file and analyze in Excel. Careful narrow down the data searches to a limited number of points or Excel will crash.

QAD is much easier to set up than Arena and SAP. And the numbering systems you can create in QAD is more customizable.

QAD Adaptive ERP

QAD is used across the whole company, and QAD as any ERP when you do the correct setup will give you the tools to manage the range full company data, It helps a lot with centralizing AP & AR, and its easy to follow up with the automotive standards EDI, cumulative orders, etc. The problems appear when you don't make a correct setup it could become painful just as with any ERP.
  • EDI is the standard for Automotive; its really easy to setup and follow up on day by day
  • The support of regulatory changes (for example new electronic accounting in Mexico). They are developing a full module to cover this new requirement in an easy way for an international company that need to follow up with this Maquila Accounting reports (easy 2 weeks setup)
  • MRP is the heart of QAD, It simplifies the planning base on BOMs, formulas or Safety Stock and works great to plan WIP, RAW and MROs
  • It's flexible, you could have relatively cheap customizations to make it work 100% as need it.
  • The knowledge base is a great tool to resolve small issues during day to day work.
Cons
  • The support could be handled better. Sometimes the QAD support team needs a lot of time to resolve issues.
  • The browsers (Netui) are a great help, but they consume a lot of memory resources; they need to improve the performance for complex browsers (normally the one s developed by customers)
  • The configurable screens are a great idea to simplify the daily work, but they do not support all the screens. The worst part is that you could create the simplified screen but when it starts working strangely, the answer from the QAD support team is that the screen is not supported.

The full product overall is better that expected, it is easy to use and it helps the company to handle different locations, control inventory, cost and requirements this provide the needed data on all the time, but when something goes odd, the help desk is behind the sale.
  • It help us to reduce the inventories (FG and RAW)
  • It reduce the time to adjust to the constantly changing international customs laws
The cost benefit, it is cheap to maintain and adjust than the other ERP
3
The cost / benefit of changing to a different ERP will create a high cost and low benefit that's why I believe that we'll continue renewing QAD for a long time.
