What is Coveo Qubit?

Coveo Qubit (acquired October 2021) uses rich visitor data to understand different user segments and serve personalized messages to audience segments using JavaScript. It is available on either a managed or self-service model.

Data is collected using Qubit’s own QProtocol data layer, or by integrating the user’s existing model via our API. Quantitative visitor behavioral data is combined with qualitative visitor feedback and ingested data from Qubit users' other systems of record enabling them to identify areas of the site and customer groups to optimize and target with personalization experiences.

Using JavaScript means that changes do not have to be hard-coded into the site, giving marketers and ecommerce teams greater power to implement changes outside of the development cycle.

Users can A/B test any changes to their site using Qubit, and the user interface lets them know what the test results are.

Qubit is a versatile software platform that is widely used by various departments within organizations to enhance their websites and optimize user experiences. One key use case of Qubit is its ability to facilitate A/B testing, allowing users to create and implement tests to drive conversion rate improvements. With Qubit, marketing teams can quickly make changes to websites without requiring CMS changes or extensive development work. This flexibility enables them to test different designs and content variations in real-time, measure the impact of these changes, and make informed decisions on website optimization.

Another important use case of Qubit is its capability to collect and analyze large quantities of data to drive personalization based on customers' previous website and transactional behavior. By leveraging this data, Qubit empowers organizations to deliver targeted experiences and offers to specific customer segments, enhancing engagement and driving conversions. This level of personalization is seen as a key advantage of Qubit over other A/B testing and personalization software available in the market.

Furthermore, Qubit's attribution tool through OpenTag plays a crucial role in understanding visitor journeys and making informed decisions on marketing spend. It provides valuable insights into how customers interact with the website, helping organizations allocate resources effectively for maximum impact. Additionally, Qubit's frequent upgrades offer new opportunities for increasing conversion rates and improving customer engagement.

Overall, users rely on Qubit for a range of use cases including A/B testing, personalization, data-driven decision making, content delivery, measuring the impact of changes, and understanding customers' preferences and behaviors. Its versatility makes it an essential tool for marketing teams, IT departments, web designers, and customer service professionals looking to optimize user journeys, test hypotheses, implement rapid changes, and ultimately improve overall conversion rates.

Versatile tool: Users have found Qubit to be a versatile tool that allows them to build literally anything, making it a valuable asset for non-technical team members. Multiple reviewers mentioned this.

Excellent account management and customer support: The account management and customer support provided by Qubit were highly praised by users. They mentioned that they had never experienced such good account management before and found the team's support particularly helpful in areas like data preparation for strategic review, growth hacking project management, and A/B testing. Multiple reviewers mentioned this.

Valuable feedback collection: Users highly appreciated the feedback box feature in Qubit as it gathers information on all parts of the business. Feedback is given to relevant departments such as merchandising and product development, leading to the introduction of new products or additional sizes based on customer feedback. Multiple reviewers mentioned this.

Difficult User Interface: Many users have found the user interface of Qubit to be difficult to navigate, making tasks feel clunky and impeding their ability to report on tests effectively.

Lack of Data Visualization Features: A number of users have expressed a desire for more robust data visualization capabilities within Qubit. They suggest that additional features or panels could greatly enhance the overall user experience by providing better insights into their data.

Compatibility Issues with Web Browsers: Some users have reported encountering bugs when using certain web browsers with Qubit. This has caused frustration as it disrupts their workflow and creates obstacles in setting up experiences within the tool.

We began working with Qubit on MRPORTER.com in April 2014. We had been looking for a web personalisation tool that would fit our numerous requirements - as a multi-brand retailer with a varied global customer base, the ability to personalise our content is key to our long term strategy. After meeting with the Qubit team and researching the market, we quickly decided that Qubit was head and shoulders above other competitors we had considered. Following a very straight-forward implementation process we applied Qubit across the full MR PORTER site, using all three of it's core elements - personalistation, split testing and visitor feedback - from the outset.
  • Providing versatility - the user-friendly Deliver tool allows us to make immediate changes to the MR PORTER site without having to build Tech solutions. This a) saves time, and b) eradicates the need for cross-channel support; I can create and manage all marketing messages myself.
  • Account management - the team at Qubit are excellent communicators, and respond to any question knowledgeably and efficiently.
  • Understanding our market and customer - Qubit's experience within the fashion sector, teamed with a solid understanding of our customer, has resulted in a highly efficient relationship. Tests that we request are often refined by the team at Qubit; their intuitive understanding of what will work best has had a hugely positive effect on our test results.
  • The main dashboard of Discover: as we use Qubit to both hosts tests and to display service messaging, we have a high number of 'layers' active at any one time. The ability to see at a glance (for example) the overall CR increase of all live tests, or results to date for a specific test without having to click into it, would be a great addition. Having said that, Qubit have contacted us in the past to pro-actively canvas any improvements we would like, so this is an issue Qubit are already aware of.
  • The ability to create new 'sentiments' within Visitor Feedback: again, this is something Qubit are aware of (and are addressing), but it would be very useful for a client to have the ability to add new Feedback terms. Currently this has to go through Qubit - and is a very long process.
  • One area where performance could be improved is in-page messaging: when using Qubit to change a specific region of page content, this can often produce a 'flicker', where Qubit identifies the region we've asked it to change, then makes the change. The delay of this flicker depends on the size of the region (or regions) you wish to change. However, this may well be a fundamental problem with this type of test, rather than with Qubit's functionality.
To date, we've found Qubit very well suited to all the elements we originally wanted to address.

We use Qubit as an A/B testing and personalization platform on our e-commerce site. It is being used within the marketing and IT departments. We had tried previous A/B testing and personalization software with our site but nothing compares to Qubit. We finally found a solution that not only doesn't conflict with our e-commerce platform, but also gives us a way to change the design on the website without needing to go through IT development cycles.
  • Qubit has great support and Simon, our point man at Qubit has given us great ideas and contributed to our e-commerce strategy to increase conversion and overall ROI on our website.
  • The ability to be able to A/B test different features on our site without impending other projects and priorities.
  • One of my favorite parts of Qubit is their ability to give us back customer feedback collected on our site in an organized and simple to use feature in their dashboard. This gives myself and team a direct line with our customers. Something I have always wanted.
  • I would like more communication between myself and Qubit. I feel that a bi-weekly phone call isn't enough to push strategy forward.
  • Initially we encountered conflicts with Qubit and other 3rd party scripts.
I would say it is well suited as a personalization tool and if you are seeking to find an A/B testing tool that fits your needs, this is a great all in one solution. It is not magic though, the best way to work with Qubit is to come to the table with a strategy and they will help you figure out the best solutions for your customers and website.

We are using the Qubit platform to help us test and optimise our main B2C sites which specialise in the sale of attractions and experiences around the world. Working closely with Qubit's strategy team, we implement tests across the sites with a focus on the product pages and booking funnel. The aim is to generate marginal gains enabling more customers to find what they are looking for and ultimately compete their transaction.
  • Qubit have an excellent understanding of our business and the challenges we face
  • They are able to help us implement 'best practise' enhancements based upon their experience working with other clients in non-conflicting industries
  • Some of the tests we do are centred around disrupting the users' journey to draw their attention to a particular message. At the moment, some of the solutions offered for desktop users do not translate to mobile and tablet, so this is an area that need to be improved.
I think it depends upon where you are in the cycle of optimisation with your site. For small to medium sized sites with traffic of up to 250,000 unique visitors a month, I think Qubit are ideal. For high volume sites, I'm not sure how effective they would be for those looking to do a lot of MVT. We are not at that stage just yet so I can't comment on that, but for basic A/B testing they are ideal.

Qubit has been a valuable thought partner with our team Marketing/E-Commerce team in generating strategies to increase engagement on our website. As an omni-channel retailer, we need solutions that integrate well with both our online and offline customers and Qubit has worked diligently in proposing fresh ideas. Particularly with our online business, we have worked with Qubit to acquire and retain customers, listen to customer feedback as well as using them to optimize our pages.
  • A/B Testing - Qubit uses a easy to use and understand dashboard to communicate statistical tests.
  • Customer Feedback Dashboard - Groups by topic of customers and also can track which steps the customer took in a particular session.
  • Amazing customer support team - No agency is perfect, but Qubit makes the extra effort to go beyond the expectation and make things right even if things have went wrong. Their attitude and optimism is what separates them from the rest.
  • Implementation could be a bit tricky especially with our home-grown platform. Make sure all assumptions have been tested and expectations are clearly set.
  • Set expectations about expected conversion rates and uplifts especially when talking about ROI.
Qubit is a great testing platform, but it requires good data to work well. If your company has more than 1M+ users per month, the tests would be able to reach statistical significance much faster. This allows us to be agile in our strategies and test multiple things in a given period. If your management team is looking for a quick, silver bullet to increase conversions, I would reconsider what objectives you want to achieve through Qubit.

Qubit is currently being used by our online team to identify and implement areas of improvement for user experience. We also use it as a marketing tool thanks to the use of CTA and overlays that help us improve the visibility/look of our promotions.
  • Level of detail the UV pulls
  • Flexibility of the tool and how advanced the tool is for reporting
  • Account management
  • Quite expensive compared with competitors
  • Interface could be more intuitive for people to use - drag and drop for example
I think Qubit is suited to major retailers that have high traffic and sales volumes.

We use Qubit in two ways. Firstly we use it to deliver A/B testing on the site, measuring the effectiveness of these changes in terms of conversion rate uplift. This can be based on the data Qubit is collecting on visitors or the feedback we receive from customers directly via the feedback exit survey. We also use the same functionality to be almost real time responsive to the way customers are interacting with our site/product. For example we deliver A/B test content onto product pages that are linked to in a HotUkDeals post, this can be done by the marketing end user very quickly avoiding having to go through our dev queue.

Secondly, we use Qubit's attribution tool through OpenTag to understand how our visitors are arriving on site and the journey they take through to purchase. This allows us to make far more informed decisions on marketing spend, allocating to not just last click channels but those that assist also.
  • Account Management - the support we receive from the account team at Qubit is second to none.
  • Simplicity - It's very easy for someone with limited design/coding experience to be shown the system and to be able to test ideas
  • Sharing best in class - operating across a number of different verticals, Qubit are adept at employing best practice in your account, giving immediate results
  • Confidence - Qubit's robust testing system/process ensures confidence in test results
  • Attribution - Qubit provides the data in a great format, there is room to improve consultancy on the data this throws up
  • Data aggregation and reporting - something that Qubit are definitely working on but plenty of opportunity here
Things to think about before signing on with Qubit:

What are my site traffic levels and how long will it take to prove significance in a test?
Do I have the resource to enable self/internal testing rather than relying on account team?
Do I really need to take the full suite of products on day one or can I add when ready?
What level of A/B testing can I deliver through internal resource, do I have traffic potential to try multi-variate tests and would this better suit my needs?

We use Qubit at Toast for A-B testing various website features and layouts which would be otherwise difficult to assess the profitability of.

The interface and experience is both simple to use and feature full, including both "basic" and "advanced" areas to set up your A-B tests. If you do not have anyone with web building expertise in your company, Qubit are more than happy to help design and create A-B tests on your behalf.

Our results from Qubit are outstanding and we can clearly see that decisions we have made based off the results of A-B tests run through Qubit are contributing very heartedly to overall website based profits. On our most successful A-B tests we are getting > 3% revenue increase so we can make decisions to implement these features into our site permanently.

Qubit also has an extremely competent and efficient support infrastructure where we deal primarily with our account manager who can answer 90% of our queries - it's much better to deal with a single point of contact when dealing with third parties - and in the instances where we have a particularly technical issue, their technical team are able to help out with just as much proficiency as their colleagues.

We are very impressed with Qubit and whole heartedly recommend them.
  • Provides an efficient and effective way to test website features including profitability break down
  • Incredible support team who are always readily available and have helped with any query we have had yet
  • A large, easy to access collection of ideas for A-B tests based on market sector would be beneficial, however not having this does not reduce our perspective on Qubit
At Toast, we build a lot of our tests ourselves using web languages, mainly JavaScript. If you do not have a web team who deals with advanced coding at your company I would recommend investigating more on what Qubit can do for you in your particular company.

If your website is outsourced to a third party or locked down, there may be limitations in what Qubit has access to. However, I can confirm this is not something we have experienced ourselves.

Qubit has been used as an A/B testing tool and a feedback collection tool in our top European markets. It has mostly been used by the eCommerce department for rapid testing for our six most important sites. Moreover, it has been used by a variety of departments for better customer insights through the visitor opinion module. I can safely say that Qubit has helped us reduce the implementation time for most of our tests by more than 50% and has helped us create strong business cases for top management.
  • A/B testing
  • Collection of visitor opinion
  • Visitor opinion auto-categorization
  • Providing visitor opinion in the original language in combination with the English translations.
Qubit is more appropriate for a site with a significant amount of traffic.

We have started using Qubit more than a year ago. It is being used only for the E-Commerce department of Uniqlo Europe. Since our platform is being managed in Japan, Qubit gives us the flexibility to implement redesigns in an easy manner and increase our conversion rate accordingly. We also use the Discover platform for behavioural data reporting and A/B live testing on the site.
  • A/B testing supported by great account management
  • The feedback box has helped on many levels as it gathers information on all parts of the business. Feedback is given to relevant departments such as merchandising and product development. New products or additional sizes are being introduced based on the customer feedback.
  • Redesigns - Since our platform is being managed in Japan, Qubit gives us the flexibility to implement redesigns in an easy manner and increase our conversion rate accordingly
  • Great account management.
  • Several tests that we wanted to push live are taking longer to implement as expected. I wish they had more capacity especially around Christmas.
We have tried to use Qubit as a tool to answer business questions such as finding the right free shipping threshold. However, Qubit seems not to be the appropriate tool to answer those questions. On the other hand, Qubit is a great tool for customization and targeting content to different customer groups.

Qubit is being used for multivariate testing on the DFS Website, to improve customer journeys onsite as well as feeding back into overall marketing campaigns.
Qubit is also used to implement technical changes to the website, before any changes are hard coded, speeding up the change management process.
  • Generated increases revenue from simple AB tests, tracked to website conversion rates
  • Implemented a compliance change to the website that could have taken a couple of months as part of a release schedule
  • Tested a marketing stap lines for a campaign with the winning variant being taken through the line
  • Qubit is a fast growing company with the issues that growth can cause, ie change of the internal team, slight lack of depth in talent. Most of these issue have been overcome
Volume of visitor numbers is vital to gain statistically significant findings- So the discover service is less relevant for our smaller brands

We use it for A/B testing, customer insight, user insight, Targeted on site advertising. 3rd party due diligence, Tag Management. It is mainly used by the E-commerce team for Links of London, we originally started with it solely in the UK , but we were impressed with what it does so we rolled it out on to our Canadian and US sites as well. We now also use it to enhance the customer experience through Customer service. And we feed info through to other teams, such as the merchandising team, within the company when relevant.
  • Tag Management - easy interface for non Java Script users.
  • UX enhancement - Team advice from Qubit on enhancement theories and strategies
  • A/B testing - Good interface for setting up testing layers. good support from Qubit if needed.
  • Trigger email reports would be nice
The Qubit Tool is a good way to learn and react to the users of your website. It has Detailed exit feedback from users. A quick and usable interface that allows the e-commerce team to theorize, learn and enhance all areas of the website without the cost of hard-coding changes before they prove themselves to be worthwhile changes.

Qubit is used cross functionally throughout Marketing, Conversion Optimisation, Web Design, Customer Services etc, to optimise user journeys, test hypothesis and implement rapid changes.
  • Speed - Qubit allows you to make changes of varying levels of complexity rapidly
  • Internal expertise - you are able to have robust discussions with the internal team to develop and expand on hypothesised experiments
  • Availability - a great 'hands-on' and 'always on' approach from the team allowing flexibility to implement experiments
  • Cost - its a good product but it comes with a big price tag....
Pro - great if your platform has slow development cycles.

Qubit is used to optimise site conversions by providing visitors with highly targeted and personalised content. It's being used by the marketing department, in conjunction with design who help code some tests and design the visual layout of the test.
  • Usability - interface is relatively straight forward and intuitive
  • Bypass IT to be able to quickly test out new on-site marketing ideas
  • Honestly reports on the success (or failure!) of tests
  • Further development of our ability to organise test would be great. I.e., folders for checkout tests, new user tests, promotions. We can then see past tests completed, current tests and drafts
How appropriate is it for the business. How much traffic do you have? How long will it take for a conversion? There's a decent price tag attached to it, can you foresee your business making more than that each month?

My company has been using Qubit for just under 6 months to test personalisations and new features across our portfolio of websites with primary goals of increasing conversion, improvng customer experience and learning rapidly.
  • Enables very rapid deployment
  • Enables targeting of personalisations and tests on a large range of dimensions
  • High quality, committed team
  • Rigorous statistical approach
  • Occassionally we would like to use specific goals for tests that are not directly possible, though Qubit always attempts to supply the desired data manually when this happens.
  • Sometimes the lead time to create more complex tests has not been as predictable as we would have liked.
Ensure that Qubit is appropriate for the traffic levels on your website - if your traffic is not of a certain volume it may take some time to get results to your tests.

Qubit was used by the development team for tag management, but I was using it for analysis and AB testing, as well as qualitative feedback. It addressed the business problem that we wanted more insight into what's driving performance for our business, but didn't have much in the way of an in-house analytics team - we relied heavily on the analyst they assigned to our account who did really great work.
  • Integrated components - the data capture for tag management feeds into the analysis and reporting, which in turn ties into the qualitative feedback and AB testing tool.
  • Intelligent team - everyone we met at Qubit was extremely intelligent and competent.
  • Focus on ROI - they put together a tracking document showing everything they'd helped us with and how much return it had driven, which easily justified the fees.
  • Currently I see Qubit as a premium service - now I work with startups I'd like to see a low cost version to help us get started and grow into one of their enterprise clients
  • There were a lot of requests we made that required custom work, when competitors had these types of reports as standard
I think Qubit is incredibly well suited to the retail space, but users with less clean-cut conversion journeys like sites with multiple business models (CPC and CPA on same site) will struggle. Make sure you look through example data for your sector in their dashboard so you get a feel for whether the reports will be actionable without building something custom.

As lead Front End Developer for the OSI Team at Maplin Electronics I am responsible for the front end of the website and I also manage the Qubit account where by I take a more technical hands-on approach with the technology that Qubit have to offer. The Qubit dashboard offers a simple, non-technical approach with an easy to use solution designer, as well as my preferred 'advanced mode' where by I can simply design the solution by writing raw JavaScript, jQuery, HTML & CSS. There has also been the recent addition of a repository, loaded full of solutions that come in handy, pre built! Qubit gives us the ability to identify and develop both 'quick wins' and complete UI changes to areas of the website. We can then gauge the success via the dashboards and the strategists are always on hand to help if we have any issues. In some cases, when we need to deploy a quick change to the front end, Qubit can really come into its element as we can fire out a change within seconds giving us control and the ability to respond until a hard-coded deployment takes place which is a longer process!
  • Flexible & Powerful Dashboards - Give the user the ability to take complete control over the product.
  • Support - Qubit have an outstanding team of knowledgeable and helpful experts.
  • Innovating - Qubit are on top of their game, pushing out improvements and innovating their products.
  • Custom A/B Test targeted traffic levels - Although I have been told this is coming!
  • Integration of more KIPs within individual tests.
Qubit has a selection of great products and I feel like they would add value to any eCommerce business, especially if you have the type of person who wants to constantly monitor the opinions of your customers and react quickly to their feedback and test / implement on the fly changes to your front end.

Qubit is primarily a conversion rate optimisation, and personalisation tool, however it's such a versatile solution with such a great team behind it, that it's become completely embedded across our ecommerce teams. When we want to deploy messaging quickly we bypass our CMS and go straight to Qubit. When we want to build out some front end functionality, we don't talk to Qubit before our system integrators.
  • Ease of use. Qubit is easy to use for conversion rate optimisation and basic personalisation, for non technical team members.
  • Versatility. Qubit combines a fantastic product with an expert team. They can build literally anything.
  • Support. Never had such good account management from a software vendor or agency.
  • Since Qubit was set up as testing/optimisation tool, you can't deploy to 100% of your audience, as they require a 10% control for every test.
If you don't have in-house devs or a dedicated optimisation team, Qubit is ideal as it combines a robust product with a semi-outsourced/managed solution. It helps to have some ideas of what you would like to test, but the Qubit strategists are full of ideas since they work with so many other websites. If you are lucky enough to have an in house optimisation team with good javascript skills you might not need a solution like Qubit.
