What is Coveo Qubit?

Coveo Qubit (acquired October 2021) uses rich visitor data to understand different user segments and serve personalized messages to audience segments using JavaScript. It is available on either a managed or self-service model.

Data is collected using Qubit’s own QProtocol data layer, or by integrating the user’s existing model via our API. Quantitative visitor behavioral data is combined with qualitative visitor feedback and ingested data from Qubit users' other systems of record enabling them to identify areas of the site and customer groups to optimize and target with personalization experiences.

Using JavaScript means that changes do not have to be hard-coded into the site, giving marketers and ecommerce teams greater power to implement changes outside of the development cycle.

Users can A/B test any changes to their site using Qubit, and the user interface lets them know what the test results are.

Qubit is a versatile software platform that is widely used by various departments within organizations to enhance their websites and optimize user experiences. One key use case of Qubit is its ability to facilitate A/B testing, allowing users to create and implement tests to drive conversion rate improvements. With Qubit, marketing teams can quickly make changes to websites without requiring CMS changes or extensive development work. This flexibility enables them to test different designs and content variations in real-time, measure the impact of these changes, and make informed decisions on website optimization.

Another important use case of Qubit is its capability to collect and analyze large quantities of data to drive personalization based on customers' previous website and transactional behavior. By leveraging this data, Qubit empowers organizations to deliver targeted experiences and offers to specific customer segments, enhancing engagement and driving conversions. This level of personalization is seen as a key advantage of Qubit over other A/B testing and personalization software available in the market.

Furthermore, Qubit's attribution tool through OpenTag plays a crucial role in understanding visitor journeys and making informed decisions on marketing spend. It provides valuable insights into how customers interact with the website, helping organizations allocate resources effectively for maximum impact. Additionally, Qubit's frequent upgrades offer new opportunities for increasing conversion rates and improving customer engagement.

Overall, users rely on Qubit for a range of use cases including A/B testing, personalization, data-driven decision making, content delivery, measuring the impact of changes, and understanding customers' preferences and behaviors. Its versatility makes it an essential tool for marketing teams, IT departments, web designers, and customer service professionals looking to optimize user journeys, test hypotheses, implement rapid changes, and ultimately improve overall conversion rates.

Versatile tool: Users have found Qubit to be a versatile tool that allows them to build literally anything, making it a valuable asset for non-technical team members. Multiple reviewers mentioned this.

Excellent account management and customer support: The account management and customer support provided by Qubit were highly praised by users. They mentioned that they had never experienced such good account management before and found the team's support particularly helpful in areas like data preparation for strategic review, growth hacking project management, and A/B testing. Multiple reviewers mentioned this.

Valuable feedback collection: Users highly appreciated the feedback box feature in Qubit as it gathers information on all parts of the business. Feedback is given to relevant departments such as merchandising and product development, leading to the introduction of new products or additional sizes based on customer feedback. Multiple reviewers mentioned this.

Difficult User Interface: Many users have found the user interface of Qubit to be difficult to navigate, making tasks feel clunky and impeding their ability to report on tests effectively.

Lack of Data Visualization Features: A number of users have expressed a desire for more robust data visualization capabilities within Qubit. They suggest that additional features or panels could greatly enhance the overall user experience by providing better insights into their data.

Compatibility Issues with Web Browsers: Some users have reported encountering bugs when using certain web browsers with Qubit. This has caused frustration as it disrupts their workflow and creates obstacles in setting up experiences within the tool.

Companies can't remove reviews or game the system. Here's why

Qubit platform is simple enough to understand for companies that are just starting an optimisation and personalisation programme, but powerful enough to scale and deliver lots of tests easily. Most of the 'tech' happens behind the scenes. There are other suppliers that focus more on complex statistical configuration, but we found that the way Qubit surfaces the data is reducing complexity and makes it easy to understand and helps focussing on improving customer experience.

It's well suited to an ecommerce environment where goals can be measured with sales and similar measurements. Also, to really make use of the A/B testing with statistical significance, you need to have good traffic numbers.

However, while a low traffic retail site would still benefit from many of the other features of Qubit, it's less appropriate for any other type of website where the goals are harder or impossible to track.

I think companies will reap the full benefits of Qubit if they sign up for more than one of Qubit's product offering. Getting access to Experiences alone is great, but the impact is truly amplified in conjunction with Social Proof and Visitor Pulse, etc.

Qubit is well suited for companies that not only want access to data, but are also truly willing and able to take meaningful action based upon these insights. Qubit allows you to capture so many events and segment your customers in many different ways, but it is really only worthwhile if you are able to then take action and actually utilize these insights.

Qubit works well in certain situations, but any internal backlog in IT, specifically Data Integration or Development, will run into consistent issues between published tests, the ability to hard code winning tests and the actual use of the data engine that Qubit provides. Having a fully Functional IT team is necessary in order to make the best use of the tool. This is somewhat at odds with some of the work we are requesting them to do for us, based on the fact that our IT backlog is significant. In short, we are using Qubit to provide additional IT bandwidth, but Data integration requires a decent amount of IT bandwidth.

Qubit is great for quick code deployment. There have been a few occasions where there are live issues and Qubit has been extremely useful for temporary instant fixes. Although the A/B testing is a great feature, we could probably build something in-house that is faster visibly. This is the biggest problem with Qubit - the speed of loading the code and tests.

For a company where you have the in-house designers and an analytics team that could extract everything they need from the tool, it may be worth considering, but I'd be tempted to look at other tools in the market as alternatives.

Personally, I have only used Qubit as a Tag Manager & Experience Manager to make alterations to the front end of our site, and they do sit very well in this space in terms of functionality and control offered. The tool is easy to use and does achieve the results you want, albeit slower than you would want if you rely on Qubit Engineers to build your code/experiences.

In terms of where they don't sit well, I am unsure, as the few reasons I use them they do fulfill those requirements. I can't comment on the other functionalities they offer.

Qubit is well suited for use on websites built on basic CMS environments where functionality is limited. Qubit offers many options that would cost a fortune to develop on many CMS. Qubit is also well suited to content plans that target well defined customer segments. If you have an array of content developed for various customer segments, Qubit can help you set up simple journeys for all segments without ripping your website apart.

Qubit is very well suited to a business that can not easily make implementations to their site and want to improve both customer experience and site conversion quickly. It is an excellent tool for trialing new ideas and can also be used to understand customer behaviour patterns. I would say it is less appropriate for basic sites that do not really need to make amendments to their site.

Qubit was the worst business decision our CRO program made. Their platform was not well suited to our needs and we failed dismally in not discovering this during our due diligence. The AB/MVT testing became unreliable and the business lost faith in a strong team because Qubit was unable to deliver. Moreover their analytics is just a reskined BI tool.

Well Suited for:

  • Verify internal changes made by A/B testing.
  • Using social proof to improve customer journeys.
  • Segmenting customers based on locations/languages/previous actions.
  • Targeting specific users by uploading CSVs.
  • Personalising the experience based on all of the above.
Not Suited:

  • Large builds take a long time and have many defects. This takes further time to fix them.
  • Quick wins can take a long time due to the build/QA queues that come as a result of the shared resource pool that's split amongst several clients.

If you are a small organisation, an enterprise solution like Qubit may not be the right choice for you. However, if you are a big company with the budget to spend on a very clever tool with expert help then this is ideal.

Customers well suited for Qubit are those that have an in-house analyst that can go through the data regularly as well as a website with significant enough traffic to ensure tests are completed in a timely fashion.
