I prefer to build my own, although there are some great applications out there. I personally use the QuickBase developed applications to get inspiration, find new ways of solving something or taking bits and pieces to integrate into my applications.

Updates are pretty simple from my perspective. Any time we have an update we evaluate what we are trying to accomplish and how it fits into our environment in the app. We discuss the process, map it and then build it. The product is so flexible it's hard for me to think of a scenario where we struggled updating an app.

QuickBase adds new features every month and some are more useful than others. Though they recently added Webhooks which I implemented between two applications which allows logging of a location which I couldn't do before. They also have added new charting options recently which I was able to start using that day and have been instrumental to our sales group.

I've been updating our application on a day to day basis and depending on what you're updating, it's usually pretty easy. As long as you're not changing the relationship or table names, you're probably in no danger or making things worse.

I have developed, maintained, and updated numerous Quickbase applications. The code and the organization thereof has always been simple and straightforward. Sometimes it can be difficult to find the specific setting for a desired output and you will spend some time searching through the many different settings pages, but once you locate it you will be able to achieve the desired outcome every time. The support for the Quickbase code and settings is also somewhat limited when compared to other larger more widely used softwares, which can be frustrating when trying to find answers, but over all it has been a positive experience.

Well, Quick Base doesn't develop applications. The user develops them on the Quick Base platform, but Quick Base has nothing to do with the development or the update process. Think of it like Legos. The Lego company provides the blocks, but what you build out of the blocks is up to you. Whether it works or not is up to you. How you change it, using the available blocks, is up to you. If your tower falls, it's not the fault of the Legos.

Having said all that, one thing that helps a lot - and that many people omit and later wish they hadn't omitted - is to carefully document the use of each field as the app is developed. For example, when two years down the road you go to change something, you don't inadvertently cause chaos by changing a field you sort of remembered as being non-essential. Quick Base provides all sorts of safeguards, from showing you exactly where in each app the field is used: how many times, in which formulae, what relationships use the field, what forms and reports use the field, and that sort of thing.

Just remember, what you do with Quick Base doesn't really have much to do with what Quick Base does. You control your app, your fields, your relationships, your tables, your reports, and your users.

Haven't yet. We have only built one app and have not needed to update it yet. I will say that the original design is one where getting information out to another app in Quick Base is easy. You can export data to CSV easy enough. To get the data into a database like Oracle or Access, you must purchase an ODBC, but then you can interact with other systems. Since the app is web-based, any API makes linkage to Workato, Zappo, or other programs a cinch. But I would think updating the app is easy since you simply right click and say add field.

Enhancing applications is part of the development lifecycle and only provides a better experience for end users in the long term. I spend a great deal of time building out functionality in phases and then updating features to take advantage of new features such as webhooks, automation and enhanced reports. Also, updated dashboards make data more accessible and more useful.

Simple updates like adding a field, adding a look-up field, changing a dropdown, customizing an email notification--these are completed in a minute or two and immediately available to users. This is an advantage of QuickBase over any other product I have tried.

There are more complex scenarios wherein one discovers that the base structure of an app is not ideal. Recently we had to entirely rebuild a major app from which we gain data about all our clients. It was time-consuming because we decided to do it right, but the results have been well worth it. We started by creating a data dictionary for the old app. There is no easy way to export a data dictionary from QuickBase so this was more time-consuming than it should be. I had to copy/paste from an admin screen then remove the garbage data. We then re-mapped the tables of the app into a more logical structure and decided which fields to keep/change/remove. We logged all that in our spreadsheet before beginning any app building. Finally, with the new data mapping in mind, we exported all the old data from the old app and adjusted the spreadsheets so that it would be in the correct structure (and field names) for the new app. We then built the new app and imported the data. The total process took maybe 2-3 months, but the end result is an app that is very easy to use and update moving forward. I don't expect to ever need to make major structural changes to this app because it was built with flexibility in mind.

So there you have it---the most complex rebuild of a complex app took 3 months at max. Keep in mind this was a side project for us, as we have zero people dedicated full time to supporting QuickBase. The operations owners take care of it in their spare time.

My first experience with Quick Base was being handed a project program and a previously created application to modify to fit the needs of the program. This added a degree of difficulty since this was my first time not only using the program but also building an app. I was more than successful in being able to not only modify but also adding many new processes into the same app.

The app that I built in a day has thankfully not remained in the state it was. Instead, each time we use our business continuity plan I sit with the agents using it and make live, real-time updates to their requests. Amazing!

When I inherited an app, adding/hiding fields in view/edit/add mode is simple. Updating/creating reports is rather easy. The challenge is when the previous app builder kept every, single fields and every, single report that is no longer needed. It's hard to know what items can be removed.
