Renaissance Accelerated Reader

Renaissance Accelerated Reader is being fully implemented in our district as well as our campus. Our campus encourages teachers to become Honor Roll members. It is a great program that focuses on reading comprehension and increases students fluency. Students gets exposed to all types of genres. In our classroom, we encourage our students to focus on non-fictions books, a ratio of 3:1. (1 being fiction). Once a week, during our PLC's (professional learning community) our campus administrator hands out our diagnostic summary report and discusses why goals were and were not meet and how we as teachers can ensure our campus weekly goals get to be met. As a district level, reports are pulled and campuses with higher percentages get recognized. In regards of problems, we haven't meet any problems with the program. <br>
  • Targets comprehension
  • Targets fluency
  • Create a positive atmosphere of readers
In our district, we been using Reading Renaissance for more than 15 years and I believe that it works well. We see our students improve in reading comprehension and making them accountable in their learning. When parents are involved, student's become more active and eager to read especially if they take their books home and read to their parents.

I use Renaissance Accelerated Reader in my class for students to test on books they have been reading. I run reports weekly to see how the students are doing and if they are comprehendign what they are reading. My students are able to see the number of books they have read, their percentage average and they get to collect items when they meet their goal.
  • Large selection of quizzes
  • User Friendly
Cons
  • Changing the quiz numbers for a different languages or being more obvious for kids
Renaissance Accelerated Reader is well suited for classrooms and schools that want their students to increase their reading and comprehension. This program does a good job to keep track of student averages and book track. I do wish that students could go back and check the responses after the quiz has been graded.

All elementary schools in my district use AR. It addresses the issue of motivating students to read.
  • Motivates students to read and meet their term goal.
  • Promotes enthusiasm in young readers to watch their flower grow as they take tests.
  • It provides a wide variety of books and levels to help differentiate and help readers on all levels.
Cons
  • When students finish a test, the "flower page" could show how many books they need to make their term goal.
  • I'd like to be able to turn off the Spanish quiz option when students log in to take a test. Many young kids click the Spanish test by mistake and then we're stuck in the test.
Kids love it and it has been a program with long term staying power. Our school has used it for over 20 years.

We use AR to help our students track their reading growth and to set goals for themselves. This system allows us to conference with our students to discuss how they are doing with reading comprehension quizzes. We are able to discuss trouble spots and make a plan of action to help them be successful.
  • Set individualized goals for students
  • Track student progress over time
  • Integrated with STAR 360 assessments to help with placement
Cons
  • It could be a little easier to find certain reports if their names were more self explanatory.
  • On some screens, it can get confusing to move back and forth between the goals and quizzes screens.
  • It would be great to have a mechanism within Renaissance Place to alert admin to remove students from your classes when they move.
I have always had great success when using Accelerated Reader. My students love the goal setting and look forward to see how far they can go with their point goals. I have some students who are extremely motivated by this and work to see how far past their goal they can get. It is also great for my lower readers as it provides scaffolding and encouragement for them.

Our school district uses Renaissance Accelerated Reader to encourage students to read daily. We also use Accelerated Reader to monitor student progress and academic growth. This product is so flexible and can be used in so many ways! Accelerated Reader is user friendly for students and teachers! There is also a way to connect parents to student accounts. Parents can monitor student progress and receive email updates about their child’s activity in Accelerated Reader.
  • The Accelerated Reader program is easy for students and teachers to use.
  • Accelerated Reader is so flexible and can be used with all students and all reading levels.
  • Renaissance Accelerated Reader makes monitoring student reading so manageable and easy.
Cons
  • Even though Accelerated Reader has a VERY LARGE collection of quizzes, not all books have an AR test.
  • They are always adding new quizzes to increase the quiz collection.
  • When selecting an Accelerated Reader Quiz, students often click the wrong language.
  • Some quizzes can be difficult to locate if they have the same title as many other books.
Renaissance Accelerated Reader is great for encouraging students to increase the amount of time they spend reading each day. Accelerated Reader can be used by different grade levels and different reading levels. This program works best when the teacher guides students on their reading journey and works regularly to monitor their progress. The program makes it easy to reward students and classes for their hard work.
Accelerated Reader would not be appropriate as completely independent learning. The Accelerated Reader platform is for taking a quiz on the book and keeping track of goals/points. The program does not provide feedback, rewards, or encouragement to students.
