Revit is a versatile software used in various industries for a wide range of purposes. Users, including architects, engineers, and construction professionals, rely on Revit for designing and coordinating building projects. With its powerful features, Revit has become the go-to tool for creating construction drawings, performing structural analysis, and solving coordination problems. It streamlines the process of creating 3D models, generating estimates, and sending isometric models to the project management team. Revit is also extensively used for BIM/MEP coordination, allowing different trades to collaborate seamlessly and catch potential issues early on. Moreover, Revit aids in visualization, enabling studio artists to develop and bring amusement park designs to life. Contractors and manufacturers invest in Revit to stay competitive and meet technological demands. Overall, Revit proves to be an invaluable asset in the construction industry by addressing problems related to quantities, takeoff, coordination between trades, and meeting client requirements.

Users commonly recommend the following:

Invest in training and learn the advanced features. Many users suggest investing in good training to quickly implement Revit and make the most of its advanced features. They recommend watching tutorials, practicing, and getting employees trained in Revit before starting projects.

Establish company standards and organize the Revit model. Users advise creating good company standards for content creation in Revit and setting up the organization of the Revit model. They also recommend saving frequently to avoid losing work.

Start with small projects and test on real-world scenarios. Users suggest starting with small projects as Revit can be time-consuming, especially for beginners. They acknowledge a learning curve but believe it is worth it. They also recommend testing Revit on real-world scenarios before fully committing, as they consider it the most widely used and compatible BIM platform.

Overall, users emphasize the importance of training, establishing standards, and starting with smaller projects when using Revit. They appreciate its time-saving capabilities, ability to work with both 2D and 3D documents, and its industry-standard position in architecture.

As I stated previously, it's hard to come up with a competitor for Revit. Revit was developed by Charles River Software back in 1997 and was bought by Autodesk in 2002. It's only real competition is with Bentley Systems or Tekla. Bently is just not used by the industry and would create coordination issues if everyone was not on the same platform and Tekla is good at concrete and struggles with any other content. The competition is just not there.

Revit is used primarily for creation of contract documents and documents that need to be used to build in the field. Sketch Up is great for a quick concept sketch, but lacks the details that Revit has which are needed to construct. AutoCAD is a great tool for details as well, but does not have as many building capabilities as Revit.

Revit has become an essential part of any design project by facilitating smarter, faster, stronger designs that make economic sense while reducing environmental impact. BIM provides support every step of the way from design and visualization, to simulation and construction. The software helps teams collaborate, innovate, and connect with clients in more productive ways. We currently work with Revit, AutoCAD and SketchUp and Revit allows us to set a collaborative network among our construction partners reducing the time frame to make deep changes over design structures. Revit is just the tip of the blade.

  • Navisworks
Revit is my number one program for design and construction and works well with Navisworks. I use Navisworks along with Revit to clash the different systems within the building to make sure ducts and beams are not conflicting in the field. Revit exports smoothly to various programs, so if a consultant is only using AutoCAD, I can still use Revit and they can use AutoCAD and the project will still function smoothly. Revit helps me to generate project sets very fast. Once I have built the model shell, i can cut sections and tag details. As I update or refine the design, I have already set up the sheets and they are automatically current.

revit is an architecture designed software, previously (and some still do) architects and offices relied on the use of AutoCAD to create projects but that is a software for engineering \, and there is where revit has no other competitor. It has all the tools to make the architect's life easier - you don't need to manage Lines, you manage 3d real construction object with parameters i.e instead of drawing a line you draw a wall and you input the height as a value and there you are working with exact construction elements.

The difference between Revit and AutoCAD is that AutoCAD is a drafting tool while Revit is a design tool. All AutoCAD did was digitize a drafting process and it had no embedded intelligence in the product while Revit being a design tool is more than just lines and circles it is walls and doors that has information associated with those components so you can determine what it is made from or what finish is on it. And because of this intelligence you now have a "single source of truth". While in AutoCAD unless you put a note next to the "door" you did not know what those lines were suppose to be nor do you know anything about that door. So ultimately Revit was the platform we went to because the demand for that digital intelligence from the clients and the request to do design quicker could be met with Revit.

I have very little experience using Rhino, so it is difficult to fairly compare the two programs. I felt that both programs were very difficult to use and required you to spend a lot of time with them on a daily basis. Because I do not use them on a daily basis, it is not uncommon to forget the things that I "figure out".

I don't think there are any other alternatives to Revit as it does what multiple programs do in one. This allows us to have one license to do all of our drawings, coordination, and planning. It really is a program that you only need to use when designing in the architecture world.

Revit's great for building a smart model that has a lot of information included in it. I actually prefer doing most of my 2D drawings in it as well instead of using AutoCAD. SketchUp however allows you to do more custom designs with ease and has less restrictions however the model you produce out of SketchUp is not a true BIM model.

Nothing really comes close to the full capabilities of Revit. There isn't even a type of program who can do everything that Revit can which comes to mind. There are some programs that can do a part of what Revit can but none of them put all these features together as succinctly as Revit can.
