We currently utilize Saba TalentSpace to handle our annual appraisal processes, goal-setting processes, and training administrations. Due to organizational complexities, the project is being utilized departmentally. For those departments that can take advantage of a cloud-based system it significantly reduces the number of paper transactions and greatly reduces the administrative burden we once had to track down training records and appraisals. This system also allows us to deliver standardized online training to meet our compliance needs across the organization.
  • The form creator in the appraisal is very strong with many robust features.
  • The LMS allows imports of SCORM 1.2, AICC and Tin Can.
  • The newly designed dashboard is user-friendly and appealing to end-users.
  • Offline adaptability.
  • The LMS could use more AI or machine learning to reduce admin burden.
  • Missing some sort of social collaboration tool.
This system fits very well with small to mid-size organizations looking for a cloud-based system. At a minimum, I highly recommend the performance management tool. I also strongly recommend understanding your end-user populations. If you happen to work in an industry with low technology utilization I'd advise against a cloud-based system like this.

Performance and Learning Management globally across the business.

HR manages the systems centrally from global headquarters in the US. We use it for our annual performance review process, goal setting, and development plans. We utilize the learning feature across departments (compliance, safety, and IT) and in launching live webinars, classroom sessions, and e-learnings.
  • Searchable Catalog for Learning - this allows our employees to search for learning that applies to their development goals. They have a catalog feature we were make sure each language has a substantial amount of courses so our global employees can take advantage of e-learning, etc as well.
  • Performance and Development Connection - my linking performance management and development goals this becomes a seamless process for our employees
  • Customer Support - we love the Halogen Champions platform where there are fun challenges and learning opportunities about the system.
  • Reporting - could be more concise and clear. Our managers and leaders struggle on pulling reports for their employees.
  • User-Friendly - on learning control center side (for learning administrators) the interface is not that intuitive and takes a while to get used to.
  • Prompts are not intuitive.
The Halogen TalentSpace is suited for attaching learning courses to goal forms and e-learning content storage. We find the customer support great and the system works for what we need it to do. We'd love it to be a little "next-level" or "above and beyond". It's a bit clunky at times but gets the job done.

We currently use Halogen to manage our Performance Management cycle for our organization. We also utilize the Learning Management module of Halogen to allow our employees to take their career to the next level through learning.

It is being used across the whole organization for our staff-level positions.

The business problems that it addresses is training needs and feedback needs for our employees.
  • It is a tool that promotes continuous feedback.
  • I like that Halogen has a lot of different processes that can be used for any stage of the Human Resources lifecycle like onboarding, performance, compensation, etc.
  • The functionality of the system definitely needs to be improved. For example, just from looking at Saba Cloud it looks like it is a more well-rounded system that is more modern than Halogen is.
  • The learning curve of Halogen is one of the cons of the system. Anytime we have someone come onboard with our HR team, it takes a long time for someone to become comfortable with the system.
  • Customer Service should be easy to be reached. Chat features, more responsiveness from Client Success Managers, etc.
It is well-suited because it has a lot of different processes, forms, and competencies that can be used. However, the functionality of the system is very old and it should be more modernized.

We use Halogen throughout the majority of our firm to assist with performance evaluations and goal setting processes.
  • First and foremost, the support is outstanding.
  • Halogen maintains a great audit trail within the software that tracks each process and individual interaction.
  • Halogen listens to their customers. Unique requests or concerns are helpful in forward thinking and the continual evolution of the product.
  • I am always looking to see more functionality for professional services clients. Tremendous changes in the last few upgrades that address multiple managers rather than just direct-line reporting.
We have not regretted moving to Halogen and continue to enjoy the benefits. We came from paper processes and the integration team made things very easy. I highly recommend it to those wanting to automate their performance evaluation, goal setting, etc.

Halogen Talent Space is used by the entire company as the main source of performance appraisals and feedback between management and employees. Using the software uniformly allows for greater tracking and reporting ability on the progress of each step in the appraisal process. We are currently trying to implement additional functionality of Halogen Talent Space, including the job description builder and the competency library.
  • The tracking aspect of determining what status a performance appraisal is in for each employee is very useful.
  • The ability for anyone in the organization to provide feedback to another co-worker using the Feedback Central Halogen link in Outlook is truly great.
  • It is also nice, from the administrator side, to be able to set up a New Years evaluation process for every employee and know that the process will be tracked and started based on the time frame that we have established upfront.
  • The navigation from the administrator side is not the most intuitive feature. Some of the programming is very different from other similar software suites that have been used in the past, there is a great learning curve.
  • I wish there were greater connectivity capabilities between Halogen Talent Space and our HRIS system. It would make data integration much less work, and easier to do throughout the year when we add staff to our headcount.
When there are large enough companies to where manually tracking performance evaluations is no longer possible, Halogen Talent Space offers a pretty remarkable solution. Also, I think the system does a great job of aligning the appraisal process for all of our managers, even though some of them are in very different and varied roles.

We currently use it for performance management and talent management at the company and are extremely happy with the product functionality and service. It is used in all our group companies currently and has been a seamless solution. As the account manager, I can safely recommend it to all users!

Our entire company uses Halogen TalentSpace. We implemented the solution to provide an easy transition from annual Performance Review feedback to regular coaching, goal-focused conversations between managers and their employees on a monthly basis. Halogen allows managers and employees to easily track goals, feedback, development, and other important conversations in one place that can be easily accessed and referenced.
  • 1:1 agendas are easy to create, add comments to and prompt excellent conversation flow on the topics that truly matter to the manager and the employee.
  • The system can be easily customized to reflect your company's language and culture. We did this in several areas of the platform (goals, development, learning), and it made a world of difference in the understanding and adaptation of our users. One example is that in each learning module, we added 3 questions in the course description so that managers would be automatically prompted to ask to follow up / learning transfer questions when their employees enroll and take a learning course.
  • Halogen support is outstanding. Any question I have had has been answered upon the first contact or within 24 hours.
  • The e-appraisal processes can be tricky to create and navigate on the admin side. I find that testing each process using the test users that Halogen provides within the system is critical to ensuring the process and the form is operating as I intended it to prior to releasing a process to our organization.
  • The succession module works backward from how we currently approach our succession/Talking Talent process and unfortunately it's not customizable to be able to accommodate our process. This was disappointing to hear and therefore we are not currently using this module to its full capacity.
Halogen has been transformative for us in how we approach the manager and employee performance conversations, goal setting and feedback. The 1:1 module and performance processes have provided an incredible platform for tracking, reporting and standardizing the way our company approaches these performance areas while still allowing flexibility for the manager and employee. The system worked so well for us because we did not have a process in place and our implementation team was able to help us create our process for this using the system capabilities.

Halogen TalentSpace is used by the whole company to manage our performance management process. Last year we implemented the 1:1 Exchange module which was the basis for our "Check-ins" program which encourages our employees to have monthly goal-setting and quarterly development conversations with their managers. These meetings replace the conversation between employees and managers at the end of the year to discuss performance. We believe that these ongoing conversations throughout the year help employees stay on track with their goals throughout the year and managers are able to provide timely feedback and support.
  • I think their Support Center is great! All of their Customer Service Representatives are knowledgeable, friendly, and able to troubleshoot any and all issues I've had in the past. I am very impressed with the breadth of knowledge that each representative has - every time I've called them, they were able to resolve my problem.
  • Halogen's dashboard is very user-friendly. The dashboard allows the user to sort, filter, and manipulate data in order to create compelling reports.
  • Version 18 of Halogen looks very sleek and is user-friendly. With simple instruction, employees are able to log in, enter their goals, and review their performance using the navigation menu on the left. Also from an administrator's perspective, it is very easy to navigate on the back-end.
  • My organization does not use all of the functions/modules that Halogen offers, but I find that those modules still appear on the Halogen main page. I think a great area for improvement is to hide these functions so as not to confuse employees.
Halogen TalentSpace is a great tool for both administrators and the end-user. I think the best part about being a Halogen client is that their Support Center is 10/10. The wait times are very short, and the customer service representatives are polite, friendly, knowledgeable, and always able to resolve my problems. While on the phone with one of their representatives recently, they took me step by step on the site to show me how to troubleshoot an issue, and followed up with an e-mail and summarized the solution.

We use Halogen across the organization for training (which I am not involved with) as well as performance management.
  • The customer support is great. Very short wait times, no language barriers, and knowledgeable associates. They always follow up with an email as well, which I find helpful.
  • The appraisal side is user-friendly for employees and administrators.
  • You do have a dedicated CSM in addition to the general support line
  • I constantly receive notifications that I am already logged in and need to sign out. This is very frustrating and the #1 complaint I receive from employees.
  • Additional customization could be helpful.
  • I have heard that the training side could be improved, but I am not involved and do not know specifics.
If customer service is important to you, I would definitely recommend Halogen. They are extremely helpful and thorough in their explanations. We have not had any significant issues with the performance management side of things. We use it for training as well, and I have heard that it could improve in that area.

Currently our entire organization uses Halogen as a talent management tool. It provides us with a tool to encourage feedback, manage and document performance continuously, manage job descriptions, and learning management. It helps us keep all of our talent management with one vendor. It also gives leaders a robust tool to help them manage so that they can lead more effectively.

  • I think they can have a better pricing structure. For example, the 1:1 conversations and Myers Briggs is an add on.
Halogen Software is an awesome solution. They have experts that tap into their own experience and others with best practices. I think Halogen is used best with an organization that has a defined talent management strategy or for an organization that's just starting off.

HR had a need to centralize all reviews into an easy to use system of record. They are using it to address the needs of handling reviews within the organization. Reviews have been a difficult task to coordinate into a centralized location in the past due to number of managers in the company as well as all the different types of employees within the organization.
  • Halogen is available in the cloud. This allowed users who were not in positions with access to PCs to utilize the software from home when near a pc.
  • Halogen is able to import data from our main ERP system using a file data dump and continuous reload each day.
  • Halogen is useful for coordinating between multiple areas of the organization. HR no longer has to send out individual emails to users but instead send system messages within the application to let users know their need to complete their reviews.
  • Since we are using a hosted product their upgrades were not coordinated in the manner we were used to. For Large customers we have audit controls to abide where we have to decide when a patch is put into production. Halogen never gave us a chance to test the patches and sometimes we were notified after the fact of the patch install.
  • If a patch was installed there was no way to back out a patch. If would have been nice to be able to either test the patches or give some lead time to at least forewarn our users. Sometimes we would be stuck for hours with out the system when we needed it most.
  • Some of the controls within Halogen are a little clunky to understand. Maybe if some of the stuff that is not needed could be hidden and only available upon request that would be great.
  • We were not able to get the data out of system. This meant we could not write reports from the data nor could we take the info and load it back into our system. During our implementation everything we asked for during presales was an added on cost. Thus this was a feature we were not able to take advantage of out of the box without an additional charge.
Halogen does get the job done. It is a better product then we used in the past. There are some shortcomings with the product that we were able to address as a custom feature, but it was additional and we had to pay to get it done. There was no option for our team to do the development. Make sure to ask for everything you need and to see if it is included out of the box as this was our biggest stunner.

Halogen helped us transition from a paper based system to an electronic, easy to report on, and highly configurable environment for our yearly reviews. We were able to easily engage our staff in the change with the support of our Halogen implementation team and the extensive toolkits they have available.
  • The goal management ability in Halogen is top notch. Having the goals flow into the yearly reviews is great from the perspective of not having our employees retype their goals at yearly review time. The flexibility in Halogen for managers to actively see the goals and report on them in a balanced score card is well received by our management.
  • The back end administration is easy to learn for even the novice administrator. Training was thorough and the customer support team is always available to help when you have a question, comment, or just need some encouragement that you are "doing it right!"
  • The user experience is seamless and popular in our organization. The staff loves the way the menus are set up and how the task bar automatically tells them what is next on their to do list. Our feedback between employees has gone up exponentially with the use of the feed back tools and we thank Halogen for the easy user adoption at time of implementation.
  • I would love to see a bit more documentation on the configuration options. Our knowledge felt limited at first until we had a chance to really get to know the tool.
For employees in a business setting it is highly appropriate to have established goals and ways to report on the metrics of goal completion and ranking. I imagine that it would be hard to track or establish goals in a restaurant or retail environment that would be considered developing the employee and not just contributing to the bottom line of an organization.

We switched to Halogen from a paper-based system and it is currently being used across the organization. It helps us manage employee performance and greatly reduces the administrative burden on our HR team.
  • I love that Halogen offers 24/7 support. I have had to call them on weekends or at odd hours in situations where we were preparing to launch a process that we had already announced to our employees and their support staff has saved me numerous times.
  • Halogen is also very flexible. We have a bit of an odd system, but our implementation consultant was excellent about helping us make the system do what we wanted it to.
  • Our customer account manager is very proactive and reaches out to us regularly to tell us about new options or just to see how we are doing or if we need any help with anything.
  • The implementation took longer than we had expected.
I think that Halogen is particularly helpful when you have specific requirements that you can't be flexible with. As I mentioned earlier, our system was rather odd and most of the other vendors that we looked at had said that their systems couldn't do what we wanted.

  • Halogen makes it easy to connect with your employees around Goals and Development plans. As a Leader, you are able to enter and/or assign Development Activities whether it is an external activity or a Learning Activity that has been setup in Halogen.
  • Halogen allows you to give and receive feedback, which is a crucial component to Development. By utilizing Feedback Central you can easily attach these items received throughout the year to any Evaluation process that you have created ... eliminating the need to re-type!
  • Halogen's Learning Module allows you to purchase of variety of e-Learning content and assign these course to specific competencies within your organization. You can also create Instructor Led Learning Activities and have employees Enroll.
  • Learning Paths are another great way to get everyone within a department or the organization on the same training page (New Employees, Department Specific, etc.) Learning Paths are various Learning Activities that you group together and can assign to individual employees or entire groups. You can add prerequisites, documentation, url's, or SCORM compliant data to test th knowledge of your employee once they have completed the course.
  • When creating Evaluation Processes the limitations around the number of Goals that will push over to the form can be frustrating to some departments/positions. Only the first 10 will automatically come over.
  • The ability to attach any Documents that you have saved within Halogen should have a way to link to any Feedback that is entered in through Feedback Central.
  • The file size of and media that is attached to a Learning Activity or Path could be increased to accommodate more elaborate videos/presentations.
I love the benefits of Succession Planning that Halogen provides. The succession questions appear at the bottom of your evaluation processes and really takes the guess work on your high potentials, low performers and those who are approaching retirement.

Our agency currently uses Halogen as our performance management program. We have quarterly and annual evaluation processes and we use daily feedback. One of the major benefits to Halogen is that it is highly customizable. While we have had to change our thinking on how to organize certain things there is very little that was not compatible with how we operate. The best change Halogen has brought around is more transparency and communication between supervisors and employees thanks to feedback.

  • Customer Support is always friendly and helpful in finding you a quick solution if possible. Extensive hours and usually no wait to get on the line. You are able to put in requests for enhancements which they've helped us achieve.
  • The system is ever evolving - there have been so many upgrades since we started using Halogen in 2009 - the user interface continues to look better and better and they continue to address issues and make updates constantly.
  • In eAppraisal, the self-review form has to exactly match the manager review form - which is because they want the system to be transparent. I value transparency but wish there was a work around approach to this because employees get confused with boxes on the self-review that they don't need to see.
  • eCompensation could use some more flexibility around promotions and adjustments, we haven't been able to use the system for exactly how we'd like to use it around merit time (though it does seem to improve each year, it just doesn't quite fit our needs yet).
We have struggled with Halogen in certain countries in terms the system being slow with internet that is not as strong. I would advise interested parties with users worldwide to consider that aspect (though that may be the case with all systems - it's very data heavy).

  • The Halogen Helpdesk is very accessible. Whether I call the 800 number or submit a ticket via email, I typically have a response within minutes. The Halogen reps are very competent and able to efficiently resolve most issues.
  • The training provided to system administrators during implementation is extremely thorough and makes the implementation process much easier.
  • Halogen is very user friendly. We launched the system just in time for the 2013 performance evaluation process, and had little time to conduct training sessions. Although we did offer training, a majority of the users were able to figure out the system on their own since it is quite intuitive.
  • My organization was interested in taking our existing evaluation forms (mainly Word and Excel documents) and replicating them in Halogen. The system offers a great deal of customization options, which is exactly what we needed.
  • The 360Multirater reports look slick and offer a great vehicle for incorporating feedback into your evaluation process. It allows you to obtain feedback from peers of the employee, as well as managers, and even external customers.
  • Automating performance management is a huge benefit, and Halogen does this well. You can customize when reminders are sent to employees, when to copy managers on reminders (i.e. if a task is late), and when to notify HR. Furthermore, the electronic signature is a fabulous (and green!) feature that was important to us.
  • For evaluation forms that are quantitative (i.e. measuring financial or other numeric results), Halogen is somewhat lacking. Some of our evaluation forms are intended to total/calculate large sums, but they system is not capable of calculating.
  • While the training was truly phenomenal, I ran into an issue due to my organization's expedited implementation. Halogen offers 16 hours of training, but they did not have any trainer's available for the first 2 weeks of our 3 week implementation. I was able to work with my Implementation Manager, and although I learned a lot from her, the 2 day training was much more extensive. If I had been trained earlier on in the process, there are a number of things that I would have done more efficiently. So, I would list the availability of trainers as an area for improvement even though it would only present an issue if you were attempted an expedited implementation.
  • Getting users to login and register for the first time is somewhat cumbersome. If you set passwords for them, they must reset and then select 3-4 security questions. This is common with many programs, but I am listing it as a weakness because a number of my users had trouble logging in for the first time. After they logged in, they found the system to be very user friendly.
  • The 360Multirater can only be used with evaluation forms that are competency-based. While this worked for a number of our evaluation forms, we did have a few that were not competency-based, and in those cases the managers could not request multiraters on their employees.
  • When drafting Self-Evaluations or Employee Evaluations in Halogen, there are a few issues with formatting. First, Halogen does not allow to use special font (i.e. bold, italics, underlined, or highlighted). Although this is not a big deal, it is somewhat inconvenient. There is also no option to use bullet points, although it is possible to use dashes to "bullet" a list.
I recommend that you talk to the rep about what has worked (and equally important - not worked) at your organization in the past with the performance management process. Within my organization, they did not want to reinvent the wheel. Our leadership was quite happy with the content of the evaluation forms they were using, and they just wanted an automated solution to replicate their current process. Furthermore, they did not want to have an overly regimented or standardized process. Our teams like the option to customize, which Halogen was able to facilitate. I would also make sure to ask how long the implementation process will take, and when will training be offered.

Halogen came forward as a natural choice. Not only did Halogen’s products meet our needs, but they're a very customer-focused organization, and that really resonated with our values. Adopting these Halogen modules helps us establish a shared understanding with employees about what high performance should look like, and the competencies and values that determine success at CPP. We can now do this effectively from the very beginning touch points with our candidates through the recruitment process and reviewing their job descriptions, through their entire employment lifecycle via performance management, feedback and development planning.

You can add a few modules and build or you can buy the entire suite depending on your organization's needs. We found that a phased approach worked well as we integrated it within our business processes.

We have been using Halogen for our employee performance appraisals since 2009. Very easy to use and to customize and the customer/tech support service is one of the best I have ever dealt with. They are 99% always immediately available and have always been able to solve any issues that may arise.

Halogen is currently being used organization wide for our annual performance reviews. The most important problem it addressed was turning a paper process fully electronic. We as a organization relied very heavily on paper, to the point were employee files were massive. Halgoen consolidated the process to one place and significantly minmized the tracking efforts.
  • Simple user interface - I think for most computer friendly populations, Halogen's interface is easy to navigate from an end user perspective.
  • Dashboard- The product delivered dashboards are great- especially for data driven organizations
  • Customer service - Every rep I have spoken with has been very pleasant and knowledgeable. I have had very positive experiences dealing with their customer reps.
  • Reporting - My organization is extremely data driven; I find the reporting to be ridged, requiring way too much manual work. This maybe a limitation based on our configuration, but it would be great to see an easy way to create custom reports.
  • "Third Party Feedback" we do not use the multirater functionality, and in lieu of that we use third party feedback -- it would be nice if the manager had the option to post third party comments into the review without having to copy/paste. Seems small but every appraisal process someone is confused or challenged by this.
  • Notifications are pretty one size fits all, which does not always work. It would be great to be able to customize notifications for groups of users. Currently, I have to follow up with employees via email, despite having notifications configured.
I would definitely recommend asking about the reporting capabilities, depending on organizational expectations. The information is there, but it is a hassle. When considering this software, I would also stress: garbage in, garbage out. Halogen is a little less forgiving than other systems. Once you have made the decision to move to this software - make sure you are really vetting current processes and appraisal forms. Otherwise, you will find yourself very frustrated!

Currently we are utilizing the eAppraisal and eCompensation modules for our company. We had a lack of clear goals and professional development for our employees as it varied company wide depending on the department management. With implementing the Halogen system we have moved to quarterly reviews and bonuses. Our entire organization has been trained on Halogen by our internal human resources team. It has allowed us to ensure all employees are receiving proper goals from their manager and create confidence in professional development (or at least working towards it)
  • Customer Service. Halogen's customer service is ON POINT. Whenever a member of HR has a question we either contact our implementation specialist or the main customer support line. Each time we call we have our questioned answered. You never feel rushed and they ensure that your are comfortable with the system and any changes you may have to make.
  • Implementation. Our implementation specialist and trainer were fantastic. They have the best knowledge of the product and we received great advice when determining what would be the best format, options, and candid issues we may run into when rolling out the system. Nothing was left unsaid whether good or room for more development and opportunity in the system.
  • eCompensation. I have really dug deep into the eCompensation system when it comes to quarterly bonuses and administration of refresh stock options. The eCompensation module is very limited when it comes to the administration of these two areas. It becomes heavy lifting each quarter on the back end where it should be more automated based off of information that is flowed in from HRIS connect. If Halogen was able to build a more automated eCompensation module specific to quarterly bonuses and stock administration I would recommend Halogen to peer companies.
The system still needs some work in regards to eCompensation flexibility and capabilities of the build out of the eAppraisal form. With a high engineer population at our company; we have had many engineers come to us to complain about the issues they have seen in the form in regards to formatting as well as the limitations they notice within the system. However, Halogen has been able to help us as a company stream line quarterly objectives and at least open the conversation about the importance of professional development.

  • Automatic email notifications - you can customize the verbiage of each system-generated notification, and tweak the frequency of notifications.
  • Multi-rater feedback - very easy to solicit feedback from employees or even 3rd parties outside of the company.
  • Performance center - a place where managers can keep performance journals, upload documents, etc for employees, and it's easily viewable in "split screen" while writing employee reviews. Everything is kept in once place.
  • Reports - Reports are very standard, and you don't have much control of what info you want to include/exclude.
  • When looking to tweak a process or form, the specific place you need to go to make the change is sometimes very "hidden" or buried. The system is capapble of so much that sometimes you can't easily figure out what you need to do. On the flip side, their customer support is very helpful.
  • Forms are "smart", but they're not as "smart" as I would have liked. For example, you cannot pre-determine the review period on forms each year, resulting in numerous calls from employees and managers asking what the period is. Also, forms are not smart enough to pre-populate the last review date into the new form. These aren't major issues, but little things that would be nice to have.
I recommend asking if Halogen is compatible with current HRIS. This would greatly help with employees changes (i.e. new hires, terms, promotions, transfers, manger changes, etc) when it comes to automatically updating employee info in Halogen.
