Currently we use Halogen for a variety of purposes including Learning, Employee development, and 1:1 discussions. Clearly in an organization our size, it allows us to organize and train in a large scale and record and track all that we do.

To be honest with you, Halogen is much like other systems out there. However my experience has been that they are willing to build the program around you, as opposed to you building your business around it.

Our organization implemented Halogen across the organization 2 years ago. Halogen allows us to address development issues, Succession issues, form consistency issues, and provides one central location to store the data.
  • Halogen makes it easy to connect with your employees around Goals and Development plans. As a Leader, you are able to enter and/or assign Development Activities whether it is an external activity or a Learning Activity that has been setup in Halogen.
  • Halogen allows you to give and receive feedback, which is a crucial component to Development. By utilizing Feedback Central you can easily attach these items received throughout the year to any Evaluation process that you have created ... eliminating the need to re-type!
  • Halogen's Learning Module allows you to purchase of variety of e-Learning content and assign these course to specific competencies within your organization. You can also create Instructor Led Learning Activities and have employees Enroll.
  • Learning Paths are another great way to get everyone within a department or the organization on the same training page (New Employees, Department Specific, etc.) Learning Paths are various Learning Activities that you group together and can assign to individual employees or entire groups. You can add prerequisites, documentation, url's, or SCORM compliant data to test th knowledge of your employee once they have completed the course.
  • When creating Evaluation Processes the limitations around the number of Goals that will push over to the form can be frustrating to some departments/positions. Only the first 10 will automatically come over.
  • The ability to attach any Documents that you have saved within Halogen should have a way to link to any Feedback that is entered in through Feedback Central.
  • The file size of and media that is attached to a Learning Activity or Path could be increased to accommodate more elaborate videos/presentations.
I love the benefits of Succession Planning that Halogen provides. The succession questions appear at the bottom of your evaluation processes and really takes the guess work on your high potentials, low performers and those who are approaching retirement.

  • Halogen has given our organization the ability for employees to align their individual goals directly to our corporate goals. This really keeps people on the same page as it relates to what the focus should be throughout the year.
  • Unfortunately, the lack of flexibility with the e-Learning bundles has kept our organization from adopting and utilizing the e-Learnings as supplemental development tools. The courses that come with the Foundations Bundles are great for a first review, but the flexibility to make changes once your employees get in and start using them would be great verses having to wait until the contract renews.
  • Feedback Central is having a great impact on supporting employees comments regarding their performance during the evaluation periods. By attaching the feedback to the Goal and or Development plan it provides proof that other people think the employee is great, too!

What is Changing, Why is it Changing, What are the benefits of this change, How will this affect me, what are the next steps. You can not over communicate. Follow up communications are just as important, too!

Currently we are utilizing the eAppraisal and eCompensation modules for our company. We had a lack of clear goals and professional development for our employees as it varied company wide depending on the department management. With implementing the Halogen system we have moved to quarterly reviews and bonuses. Our entire organization has been trained on Halogen by our internal human resources team. It has allowed us to ensure all employees are receiving proper goals from their manager and create confidence in professional development (or at least working towards it)
  • Customer Service. Halogen's customer service is ON POINT. Whenever a member of HR has a question we either contact our implementation specialist or the main customer support line. Each time we call we have our questioned answered. You never feel rushed and they ensure that your are comfortable with the system and any changes you may have to make.
  • Implementation. Our implementation specialist and trainer were fantastic. They have the best knowledge of the product and we received great advice when determining what would be the best format, options, and candid issues we may run into when rolling out the system. Nothing was left unsaid whether good or room for more development and opportunity in the system.
  • eCompensation. I have really dug deep into the eCompensation system when it comes to quarterly bonuses and administration of refresh stock options. The eCompensation module is very limited when it comes to the administration of these two areas. It becomes heavy lifting each quarter on the back end where it should be more automated based off of information that is flowed in from HRIS connect. If Halogen was able to build a more automated eCompensation module specific to quarterly bonuses and stock administration I would recommend Halogen to peer companies.
The system still needs some work in regards to eCompensation flexibility and capabilities of the build out of the eAppraisal form. With a high engineer population at our company; we have had many engineers come to us to complain about the issues they have seen in the form in regards to formatting as well as the limitations they notice within the system. However, Halogen has been able to help us as a company stream line quarterly objectives and at least open the conversation about the importance of professional development.
  • Halogen has allowed us to automate our review process. This means that instead of keeping paper copies and a manual tracking spreadsheet of who has turned in their review; Halogen has allowed the HR team to really hold employees, particularly managers, accountable to accurate completion of employee reviews.
The customer service with Halogen was on point and were able to competitively persuade with the capabilities of the system alongside with great pricing for the system. Halogen still has work to do on their interface however they are moving in the right direction and the system is making a difference in our employee population.
Implementing a new system and process company wide is never an easy task. We moved so quickly in such a short period of time that we were able to learn quickly but also have the opportunity to improve the Halogen experience. We will more than likely will renew our use of Halogen as we already are seeing a small impact which hopefully in the long run will lead to a greater impact.

The ability to quickly learn a complex system and have the communication skills to describe a particular issue you may be having with Halogen customer support in order to troubleshoot accordingly. If you have those 2 key skills Halogen personnel will be able to guide and lead you to a successful implementation and experience.

  • Utilizing the system for quarterly bonuses (not just merit increases)
  • Utilizing Halogen for an annual RSU refresh grant for all employees
  • 360 module is of some interest as we received feedback that this would help quarterly reviews become more robust.
  • Our customer support team has expressed interest in Halogen for their training. Our Director of CS has dug further into this.

Our implementation specialist was on point when I was trying to create the quarterly bonuses within eCompensation. He would make time for me almost every day on short notice to answer all of my questions....and let me tell you I have MANY of them. He always ensured I was comfortable with the system and never made me feel rushed. He wanted to ensure we as a company were successful utilizing the system to the maximum capabilities. Sean Coleman you rock!
