SAP BPM is used across the entire organization. With multiple process flows that span dozens of business lines, it was critical to find a tool that can streamline the workflow process,
  • Virtual paper trail. Iterations of process and current documentation are all stored as "artifacts", leaving a great trail.
  • Configuration of users. BPM somewhat magically determines which users will be impacted and automates rules.
  • A pro (that is also a con) is the design interface. If you know what you are doing, it is incredibly powerful and malleable.
  • A con (which was also a pro) is the design interfac.e. It will require someone with heavy technical knowledge of SAP to train others on the tool.
  • The built-in rigidity of SAP systems in general. Yes, SAP is meant to be a rigid ERP tool, but some flexibility it user role assignments would be nice.
If your organization is heavily invested in SAP as an enterprise wide solution already, BPM is really your only option. Solid, seamless integration, smooth workflow, and data trails for business analysis are impeccable. If you aren't already heavily invested, key questions to ask would be - Am I using too big a hammer? The results are impressive, no doubt, but the integration of BPM is demanding. A less-demanding, more intutive tool like Winshuttle or even AR Projekt that hooks in to SAP might be a simpler option.
  • Definitely has increased efficiency between product line business analysts, since we all can see what the others are doing and how
  • Resulted in much cleaner pass-through from the technical documentation to the end-user documentation.
While Winshuttle is comparable, they are really two different tools in that Winshuttle is a hang-on tool while BPM is a catalyst tool. With WS, workflows start in SAP, flow to Winshuttle, and back in SAP (at least with my limited experience). In BPM, everything is housed in the BPM ecosystem, resulting in a much clearer business process flow.
As a big fan of SAP in general, the BPM solution fits right in with all the other things SAP does well, and does it with incredible efficiency.
