As for sharing and collaboration capabilities of SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence (BI) Platform, it is overall a good tool to share data. On one side, it has very strong data connection as I mentioned before which ensures the basis for data sharing. On the other side, it allows you to render into different formats.

Great tool to access and analyze SAP BW data

Access Control is based on the user ID and is managed from SAP - BW side, very convenient. The report distribution is okay, but not so excellent like Tableau and Power BI.
Also, the formatting is not a big advantage. It is not interactive like Tableau.

In terms of report distribution and formatting, SAP OB BI has the ability to share the analyzed results in different popular formats via email, FTP, and/or by email. What is more, SAP OB BI also provides strong data security by controlling access to the different levels of the users.

We were sharing the reports via email in PDF format. When the data queries were to be exchanged then it is very easy to do. There are different user rights that can be defined on the system so that users can either just run your queries or can further edit the queries. The access to the universes can be limited just fine so that sensitive data is not visible to the users.

Reports in BO can be sent to multiple targets such as email, file system, FTP, SFTP, etc. with less configuration tasks. BO needs to improve in scheduling reports to locations such as Google drive or BOX.

  • We liked the real-time business intelligence accessible from all team levels (which could be walled off depending on the user).
  • Consumption of data was simple due to the report distribution abilities.
  • Patient data was protected. This was the most important aspect of our needs when it came to a BI platform.

SAP BI gives good security and access control possibilities. You can create different teams with various profiles (user, power user, developer, etc) so it is easy to manage. Report distribution is also easy. You can schedule the time and choose a common path, mail, ftp or BI inbox to deliver in different popular formats.

We like the report development tools, the sophisticated formatting and the secure hosting of the reports. The feature set withing Crystal Reports is something we require and have used almost all the option within our reports, Cross-tab, Top N, advanced graphing, complex multi-level grouping are core to our analysis of our business data.

It is very easy to share across teams. IT delivers one specific report and we can change it to our wish, - with some limitations - and share it with the rest of the team.

It helps define the reporting strategy of the company, not only what needs to be reported and how, but also who the reports should be sent to. It provides good sales and financial reports, mixing data from both areas.

It's basically non existent, it is so archaic and old looking, you might as well get a dinosaur to come help you with it. SAP does not move forward on it's interface team and the way to collaborate is to talk to your team outside of SAP and hopefully make sure you're the only 1 working on a specific task in it, otherwise both people can overwrite each others work. The reporting is fine and basic but not great.

Collaboration and Sharing

It is an easy way to share reports across the organization and enables users to view advanced dashboards and analytics without having dedicated software installed on the computer. Managing structure of reporting, sharing links to entire folders or files and setting permission on those folders and files is quite straight forward. It does a decent job at showing analysis on large data sets.

Business Objects does a good job with role-based access control that handles most types of users and situations out of the box. The ability to share reports and publish easily means that the data is quickly and effectively shared across teams. The ability to format in many different outputs is also important. The roles handle most security concerns.

SAP is good at doing queries. On the other hand, when exporting reports to Excel or another format, SAP BusinessObjects has a weird set of steps to get through the request. For that reason, most of the time when my teams need to share a report from BusinessObjects we take a screenshot of it and send it over email.

Collaboration and Sharing

Building Roles and Security models were not quite simple for us because we needed to include key SAP security objects like plant number, company code, and movement type in our model. Anyway, it is working as expected after we were able to clearly define that we wanted security of data and not only access to tables and reports.

Collaboration is good but depends on users experiencing what they might want to work with simpler interfaces for collaboration like MS PBI.

Access control is relatively easy but gets more complex with the size of an organization. Sharing data across teams is easy once you set up security and database connection/SSO. There are also multiple options for distributing reports! However, we found the security setup to be relatively difficult, with no one in SAP or third party's really having the best approach to follow. Additionally, formatting of reports is somewhat limited...even down to, for example, changing the colors on a graph to show green for positive and red for negative - in Spotfire, this is super easy but not in BI.
