SAP HANA 2.0 SPS 4 is used as the back-end database in my organization for storing the Transactional Data and reporting it on Tableau Report. It's used across the Operational Business Area in the organization. It helps the end user to see the data in real time and reporting within the SLA to make further decisions.
  • Parallel data processing.
  • In-memory storage.
  • Real-time data replication through SLT.
  • Object migration.
  • UNION node mapping.
  • Rank node performance.
If you have source system in SAP then HANA is a best solution for further Business Logic Implementation. For non-SAP source system like Teradata we need any third-party toll to replicate the data into HANA for further analysis. In cases of reporting, HANA will be best as it has the columnar storage features.

SAP HANA is being used for financial reporting and analytics across the whole organization. SAP HANA provides real-time transactional reports which is really helpful.
  • Zero downtime.
  • Single source of truth.
  • Faster speed.
  • Cost of ownership for on-premise.
  • Sometimes accidental crashes on heavy usage on peak time.
  • Faster extraction of CSV reports.
SAP HANA is more than a big data solution, it is more than just a database, it is a platform on which you can build great applications and reporting solutions.

It is being used by one department. As a developer (ABAPER) I am facing coding issues.
  • Faster than legacy.
  • Improved and dynamic.
  • Compatible.
  • Provide easy-to-do coding.
It is appropriate to work. For example, IRCTC is using HANA. It's not easily available for all users because of legacy systems on one want to switch to HANA. Everyone's first question is: why it is required to move to HANA? Also, it is very costly. Better solutions are available in the market at a lower price than HANA.

It is used across the whole organization. Application look and feel - easy to access the application with predictive word, etc. Even faster access of application and various process. Digital documents acceptance and live analytics, etc. Easy to integrate with third party applications. Overall fast, ease of application, look and feel is very good.
  • Very fast access to data.
  • Real-time analytics.
  • Application look and feel.
  • Memory requirement.
  • Replication.
SAP HANA is well suited for real-time analytics, faster access to data, etc. in sales industries such as retail, groceries. Also it very suitable to large data with a lot of real-time analytics, etc. it is not suitable in manufacturing industries, etc. where real-time data analytics are not required or in small businesses where day-to-day transactions are fewer.

We use HANA for native application as well as Business Warehouse Scale-out solution. Native HANA has been used in Global Function.
  • Native HANA used for ERS solution.
  • HANA is used in downstream well management of petroleum production.
  • HANA used for reporting.
  • Too frequent maintenance revisions.
  • Product maturity matrix on downside - all deployed HANA use case have more than 200 bugs to fix.
  • XS engine is not stable.
Real-time scenario-related business process works well. High-volume data calculation is faster. Predictive feature yet to be more accurate.

SAP HANA allows us to seamlessly manage the huge magnitude and varied data domain, thereby helping us consume the data in ways required by business users. HANA is being used extensively across different streams. As such it's quite scalable in terms of managing various TBs of data while still maintaining the accessibility and interoperability.
  • Manage huge data volumes.
  • Easy control over data, while allowing users to seamlessly consume data via different views (analytics/calculation, etc.)
  • Scalability and data security.
  • The workload class concept introduced with HANA 2.0 has at times inaccuracies in propagating the rules when faced with conflicting scenarios.
  • I am aware of the current appraoch to move from HANA Studio to Cockpit, however for a certain section of users, Studio still has better acquaintances, and I'm not sure if there are plans to completely do away with Studio?
SAP HANA does a lot better at managing humongous data volumes, building queries on top, connectivity with host of other services, workload class concept, granular access control, etc. With the ability to connect to Azure/AWS it expands the options to bring enterprise data to a whole different usage level. HANA has increased the ways/options in which data was being accessed.

At present, we have our BW system on HANA, and the HANA capabilities are used across the organisation.
SAP HANA helps us in delivering digital business solutions, business intelligence reporting, getting the business team instant reports of inventory, procurement & sales, etc. It really helps us deliver the value of IT.
  • Real-time analytics. We get current statistic data for driving business
  • Flexible in integrating multiple applications & solutions
  • Data processing is very fast
  • Migration to HANA involves a huge time commitment and is a complex process
  • Hardware costs
  • Simplification of development
Business Intelligence (BI) & Business Warehouse (BW) on HANA plays a key role. Most of the organisations are running BW on HANA and able to get huge business outcomes.

SAP HANA is used by the whole organization for the database. We store sensitive data and build new views and roles that users can access as new projects come in.
  • Multiple user access at the same time.
  • Assigning privileges without much risk.
  • User data masking.
  • Auditing.
  • User trace is well defined.
  • Creation of views is easy.
  • Deploy function.
  • Procedures to run frequently to achieve things.
  • SAML configuration.
HANA provides advanced functionalities like data masking which helps in masking sensitive data and stores data efficiently. High probability in restoring data in case of any loss, auditing data is very efficient.

So it is useful for high-risk businesses like semiconductors, data-sharing businesses.

I've worked on HANA for about 5 years, and on a lot of projects where HANA was involved. I use HANA with BW (on HANA and BW/4 HANA). Alot of analyses have moved from periodic to real-time. Heavy processing has had dramatic time reductions.
  • Realtime analysis
  • Manage heavy processing
  • Easily to manage large amounts of data
  • Optimize the system/the compilation phase of calculation and viewing with complex logics
  • Optimize the automatic push-down of the filters and the level of detail of analysis
  • Improve error messages in order to better help identify problems
I would recommend it when there are simple calculation logics but on large amounts of data. It may not be the best tool when the logics are very complex and the volume of data is very large. The implementation may seem simple but does not give the results in the expected time. Many tuning activities are required in these cases to improve the time.

HANA is being used by one department in our organization. We are using it as the central hub to consolidate data from different sources. Also utilizing the analytics capabilities of HANA to predict customer intent, sentiment and satisfaction level from all the interaction data collected from different sources.
  • Performance in retrieving the data.
  • Data security features like column encryption, data anonymization.
  • HA functionalities.
  • HANA SDI process to replicate data from different kinds of sources is patchy at best.
HANA is best suited if the performance is the key.

In my company I'm working in the SAP BW area. At the moment, I'm working on SAP HANA in a BW 7.5 on Hana per data warehouse and planning for a food company. We're working with Sap Hana to integrate the data from other systems (as actual data) and we've done a model of planning for P&L.
  • Sap Hana is very well for the "in memory" base, for performance and saving data in columns instead of rows.
  • Very helpful with the use of calculation view to develop the final solution and simplify the list of objects.
  • Developed directly on Hana Database, with the use of new objects such as calculation view, store procedures and several new objects.
  • Planning function and planning sequence, more new functionalities "standard" to allocation, for example.
  • Improve performance of analysis for office as the frontend.
  • Simplify the use of execution plan, plan view, and similar.
Hana is well suited for scenarios such as BI for manager data or enriching the data, and with objects as a calculation view. The developer can develop flow without ABAP or transformation (TRFN) but only use "virtual" data on the fly mode to avoid duplicated data.

We build and sell a data analytics as a service platform (DAaaS) for managing energy asset investments. HANA is the back end database for hosting all our customer asset data. It provides a one stop solution for data storage and management and it interfaces naturally with other SAP products that we use for developing the front end of our product.
  • HANA is available in the cloud, so we don't have to manage our own servers.
  • HANA is stable and responsive.
  • HANA has many flexible interfaces.
  • HANA comes in many versions, it is sometimes confusing to keep track of which one you are using.
HANA is useful for big data applications, and as a back-end for web browser based applications. It is a powerful and flexible solution that offers many options for customization and options for expert users, while also having simple user interface options for average business users. But if a use-case is rather simple then HANA may be excessive and a simpler database can be used.

We use SAP HANA's text retrieval and recognition engine to search in huge content in the area of document management.
  • SAP HANA is very fast!
  • Additional capabilities like geo-information related things.
  • Text analysis and mining is also very great.
  • It may useful to get rid of open SQL and have one and only one SQL language.
SAP HANA is well suited for text mining and recognition. It is less suited for geospatial scenarios.

By all organizations but just for some business areas. In particular retail.
  • Speed
  • Reliability
  • Performance
  • The problem is when migrating from Oracle DB you need to perform some adjustments.
  • It would be great to have a better view of the administration.
  • The cost of TB is enormous.
We really use it when we want the leverage our data and improve the performance of processes that would take ages in an OracleDB. We extract data from the DB very fast and we are able to present this information to the user. Also some background processes that use to take ages, are now completed within minutes.

We have large amounts of data (finance mostly) and we are aiming to use HANA to speed up reporting and streamline user experience when using our systems.
  • Speed
  • Easy modeling
  • Connectivity to other SAP tools/platform (BW for example)
  • Data tiering for BW is still not mature enough (let's see with the new version).

SAP HANA: Worth It

It is used globally. We have several landscapes already on Hana and will keep migrating other landscapes to it. It does not address problems but mainly improves performance as well as allows us to get rid of other databases.
  • It is obviously faster than other DBs we have.
  • It is more reliable and prevents unplanned downtimes, especially when using Hana replications to make it HA / DR like we do.
  • It is easy to manage. Not a lot of parametrization is required and it runs smoothly even when keeping default params.
  • It is easy to install.
  • It would be good if we could virtualize all DBs even in production.
  • Hana dynamic tiering is not yet officially released with HA/DR. Furthermore, it sounds like not many companies have a great amount of experience with it, therefore I'm wondering if it is reliable.
It is well suited for big reporting where we see a lot of huge improvements in terms of response time. It is less appropriate for very small systems or PI-like systems, therefore the cost is not worth it.

Database for the backend S4 installation. SDI platform for FPSL banking solution.
  • It's quick.
  • It's robust.

  • Smaller data footprint - 1/4 compared to traditional databases.
  • XSc and XSa confusion; XSa complicated.
  • SDI configuration and functionality; not stable; not able to delete/recreate all replication tasks at once.
Good for reading/selecting data. Not so good for writing a lot of data in parallel.
