We recommend the best tool for each customer, be it Power BI, Tableau or SAP Lumira. It depends on what kind of data source they have, available licences etc.
  • Working with files (CSV, Excel).
  • Ease of use, easy to start.
  • Quick start videos are really helpful.
  • Connecting to Micrsoft SQL Server requires JDBC drivers and add many steps.
  • A cheaper web portal should be available.
[It's well suited] if the customer is already using SAP server products or most the data is available in files. It is less of a good fit if the customer uses Microsoft databases.

We are a software service provider organisation and have a gold partnership with SAP. We are demonstrating the capabilities of Lumira for our prospects and help them achieve bigger and in-depth business decisions. With Lumira, we are able to answer complex business KPIs with the help of Lumira's visualizations.
  • Eye catching easy to to use data visualizations.
  • Support to merge heterogeneous data sources and prepare it according to requirements.
  • Sharing the custom user stories in SAP BI/BO repository and give the end users flexibility to play around with it.
  • Almost no coding required, still fantastic outcomes.
  • Infographics can be made easier to use.
  • Mobile and handheld device orientations and rendering could be improved.
  • Time series sliders can be added which was there in dashboard designer.
In today's world it’s all about getting information from raw data and in that area SAP BusinessObjects Lumira is performing significantly well. Probably this will bring the end of the traditional multi-page tabular report. If you can’t visualize your data, you can’t make decisions out of it.

I used it to rapidly implement and deploy some "dashboards" for use in one department of our existing client.
  • First, it is highly responsive and has a user-friendly interface, with a very rich and intuitive look and feel.
  • It is easy to quickly get going and do rapid prototyping.
  • Learning curve is not steep.
  • It enforces best practices by "forcing" pre-aggregation in the back-end.
  • It misses the ability to give developers options to dive into the "code-behind" and manipulate without leaving the environment. It could do with a WYSIWYG type of functionality.
  • Stacked graphs need some enhancements with regards to displaying the data labels and the sum totals of each stack category.
  • The major blockage I faced was failure to do calculations in the compose because of a lack of dimensions. It was a major blow for me.
Good - Quick Proof of Concept (POC) and rapid prototyping works well and saves time; Value for money. Lumira's insistence on best practices makes it easy to use and implement.

Less-Good - implementing heavy customization and dynamic functionality; less dynamic features has less independence to the developer on what can be customized.

SAP BusinessObjects Lumira is being used and suggested for customers that have implementation needs. When it is used at the management level and in departmental headquarters it strengthens the process structure and presentation of results. The information is designed and presented clearly and accurately and favors the decision making and evaluation processes. It is especially productive.
  • Create reports quickly with a lot of data
  • Easily share and analyze business strategies
  • Creates stakeholders
  • Graphic annex tables and summary information
[It is well suited for] submission of information to managers and control bodies.

Currently I am working as SAP Functional Consultant and as a part of my job role I do implementation of SAP Lumira at our client location.
  • First advantage is that you can install SQL Drivers and further connect SQL with Lumira. This will help to use SQL query in order to import data into Lumira Directly.
  • Advance Graphs are readily available for user, which can be used easily with a handsome knowledge of Statistics.
  • You can also create different visualization and altogether put them along with each other. This will be created as a Story in Lumira which becomes a Presentation for the user.
  • SAP Lumira provides a stage to connect to your SQL database. Customers have frequently asked us a question that why SQL query already saved in SAP Product such SAP B1 is not available in Lumira to be selected. That means customer wants to link SQL saved queries of SAP B1 with Lumira, but not manually to be copied and paste.
  • Also the queries created and used in Lumira don't get saved, not if the user wants to run the same query for another time period. He needs to again do manual copy paste and create the same story, but cannot update the saved one.
  • Also users look for some pre-designed examples readily available with Lumira Installation for their own reference.
It's quite useful for Internal reporting, Management reporting and Head office Reporting.

SAP BusinessObjects Lumira is being used in our creative department to develop infographics.
  • Customer support
  • Customizable
  • Variety of visualizations
  • User interface (rather complex and at times, hard to follow)
• Sharing options - would love to be able to export visualizations to other formats besides PDF
  • Data entry / editing within the program
Well suited: To present large data sets where little visual design is necessary
Less appropriate: Visually-driven, highly customized infographics

I utilize Lumira to visualize HANA calc views for a defense management company interested in 8 different monitoring activities within the organization.
  • Real time connection to HANA.
  • Simple to use.
  • Needs more options to filter. Right now, it's single and multi drop down. What about sliders or radio buttons?
  • More graphical displays, such as dual axis bar graphs that allow for block overlays. Right now, the design features are only 25% of what alternative solutions may offer.
  • Color Legend is not dynamic.
  • Changing the data source, where missing fields no longer exist, will disappear... as opposed to leaving the view waiting for an alternative, available fields.
Due to its visual limitations, I would much rather use Tableau than Lumira. I have found the simplicity of using Lumira to fall short in comparison to other services that I always have available to me.

Great Visualisations

We only use SAP BusinessObjects Lumira sporadically when we need to create visualisations to go along with reports or when needed for presentations. It is a very useful program to use in addition to regular reports.
  • clear visualisations
  • clear dashboard
  • good integration
  • can only create static visualisations
  • new users need lots of help
SAP BusinessObjects Lumira is well suited when you need to create a visualisation. That would be the only appropriate use for this program as that is what the program was created for and there are better options if you want to do other things.

SAP BusinessObjects Lumira is mostly used by the departments who put together reports for management but it is not used all the time by every department. The departments that I have experience using Lumira with are logistics, customer service, and procurement.
  • useful visualisations
  • not too much of a hassle to use (can figure out the program even if you don't have advanced training)
  • fully integrated with multiple data information platforms
  • expensive
  • the dashboard is too busy
Because of the cost of SAP BusinessObjects Lumira I would not recommend it wholeheartedly because I would expect the program to be a bit more refined (cleaner and easier to use UI) and to have more flexibility for the price. SAP BusinessObjects Lumira is great when you have to create a visual that will be used to demonstrate something that would otherwise be complicated to explain without just words or regular charts.

In our organization we use SAP Business Objects Lumira alongside our reporting software to create visualisations as needed. We use it when we want to highlight in presentations (usually to management) and need a more specific visual aid than can be created easily with our reporting and analytics software.
  • Eye-catching visualisations
  • Dashboard easy to use
  • Cluttered UI
  • Static visualisations
I use SAP Business Objects Lumira to create visualisations when I need to clearly and visually convey something that would be complicated to do so with just words, or simple graphs/graphics. I do not think that this program would be the most effective for regular reporting needs though, at least that has been my experience with it.

SAP BusinesssObjects Lumira has greatly benefited my productivity during my work. It has greatly helped me and aided me in getting my work done efficiently and effectively. It is easy to use and has a great user interface, thus making it suitable for newcomers to adopt. Lastly, it is able to transform work productivity into cost savings for my organization.
  • Easy to use
  • Great UI
  • Does jobs well
  • Costly
  • Needs more customization & control
The data visualization features were amazing! I couldn't believe that a computer programme could accomplish such sophisticated tasks where data is well presented in a manner that is visually appealing. However, it takes some time to get used to the features and such. I hope there would be more instructions/tutorials available for new users.

I consulted for a company that was having serious network troubles which were directly impacting their production process. I was asked to come in and aid their team in identifying the root cause and then to put a plan in place to rectify the problem. When I arrived on site, they had virtually no visibility into what was going on in their network. After working with their team to compile enough data to identify the problem, Lumira allowed us to easily illustrate the problems to their management without losing them in confusing network speak. It allowed me to convey a very complex and confusing problem in a way that could be digested by people outside my field.
  • Allows simple creation of data visualizations without requiring the assistance of a DBA or a coder.
  • Can easily pull data from multiple sources.
  • Takes almost no time to learn, very intuitive.
  • The primary interface feels cluttered, there is so much data and so many options it can appear daunting to a new user.
I find Lumira to be a fantastic piece of software for easy data visualization, however as the data is static its use cases will be rather limited for my field. As a tool to create visualizations for a presentation, or emailed statements it is fantastic. However if it was possible to provide dynamically updated data this would become a must have.

SAP BusinessObjects Lumira is new to our organisation. We have many other tools already, and we are considering whether we can use this for better visualisation in our ERP environment. The business problem we face is that the default SAP BW graphs and reports are too bland, too basic and do not satisfy the user requirements.
  • The tool seems easy to use, it was simple to connect to sources and to get going.
  • There are many default connections to SAP environment
  • The ability to consume SAP BW queries directly in Lumira was great, and the interoperability seemed seemless
  • The tool is relatively new, and if it is going to go up against stiff competition it has a lot of catch-up to do
  • The user interface is simple, but might be cumbersome for those who expect more from a tool in a few clicks
  • The limited trial version will dampen the opportunity for people to properly review and get used to the tool. Different options should be explored for free trials that extend for longer - against competition that is available for free.
Good in a predominant SAP environment, as it connects seamlessly with the SAP environment. When it is compared to other tools that work against many database formats and tools, it still has some way to go. It is only through time and regular exposure to people who use visualisation tools all the time that these tools mature.

It is being used by myself along with CMO. I'm involved in business development activities apart from my Engineering based commitments.
We use it for visualization and analysis of our company's business, there by helping in decision making.
As we primarily work on Machine learning and data analytics application, it helps in that regard as well.
  • Dashboard creation is very easy and does not require much coding expertise.
  • Very easy to use and user friendly
  • Excellent data analytics tool bundled with awesome visualization features
  • Continuous updates with significant improvements to the tool
  • The flexibility in sharing Lumira output lags behind its competitors
  • No option to retrieve data directly from a website using OData service (URL)
  • Variable manipulation is not allowed much unlike Tableau
Not for data scientists, but more for traditional data miners.

Since I am involved with academia at a large research university, SAP Lumira turned out to be an excellent platform for providing visual insights to generic Excel data. In fact, we are encouraging our students to utilize this software for extracting relevant information from large sets of data.
  • This software is absolutely amazing because it is very easy to navigate, and the results are quite informative as they provide visual insights to generic databases.
  • I used it to create multiple visual aids depicting the countries of origin of our graduate students, which helped us evaluate the effectiveness of international recruiting efforts.
  • Finally, I utilized Lumira to prepare informative visual deliverable materials in order to illustrate the grade distribution among minority students.
  • I wish the ZIP code mapping was incorporated in Lumira.
As an average academia user, I find Lumira extremely helpful for preparing valuable visual arguments as persuasive evidence in support of business decisions. I can also see how it could be beneficial for small and medium-sized business entities in assessing their results and attainment of budgeting objectives.

When I used it, it was only being used by a department, and I was only a user for a brief period of time. We used it mainly as a tracking and analytics tool. After gathering data using Lumira, we then built a strategy around the data we collected from it. This tool helped us build charts and graphs based off of the data we collected in real time. This tool was useful in helping us spot trends and back up our ideas for how to move forward or allowed us to quickly change our strategy if needed.
  • Provides real time data analytics.
  • Provides visuals on trends and analytical data and transforms it into a more easily readable and digestible format.
  • Relatively easy to use and understand.
  • When I used it, it was still relatively new to both myself and my department. It was very glitchy at the start and would have trouble running occasionally.
  • As I said it was pretty new when I started using it and was slightly buggy. This was around 1-2 years ago.
Lumira would be helpful to any company really. Every company relies on data to drive their decisions or back up their point of view in a presentation, this is speaking quite generally of course. I however, see it as being the most useful to any company on the larger side of the corporate scale or any smaller company that uses data heavily, to make business decisions. It was a very useful tool to help those of us that need a visual representation of what the data is portraying. This tool was also very helpful in tracking user trends for us as well as allowed us to quickly and easily identify our top selling products and any changes in demand. If we noticed a change in demand, we could quickly look into what caused that change and adjust our strategy accordingly.

SAP Lumira was was used across the whole organization. The business problem that it addressed was the gap that still exists between the European and U.S sectors of the company. In addition, it helped us understand our type of industry in both parts of the world. For example, any major differences, such as something that works well in one geography, that we can implement in the other if needed. It helped us to figure out what works best for a particular geographical area.
  • User friendly, which allows you to consolidate a major data base on certain criteria. For example we were able to analyze revenue data for all materials across all 7 ½ years and find out which of the material current materials did provide that data for a certain year.
  • Our company Global Bike was able to pull the material quantity sold per year to help forecast inventory levels for the future.
  • Global Bike was able to see if there was seasonality in the revenue (USD) earned over the last 8 years. Further more, we were able to see which month had the highest revenue. It helped make important decisions in regards to resources for a particular time of the year.
  • More formatting options for visual aid.
  • Often hard to filter out data with certain criteria. Instant preview of the new filter as one hovers over the options would help.
  • It seemed to lag at times when we were creating a slide show or report.
It was well suited when choosing the different types of visual representations, bar charts, pie charts, lines, etc. We had option to understand the data at hand.

From a user perspective, it is a very easy tool to use. You can easily interact with charts. The look and feel is awesome when compared to earlier BO products. I used this tool for customer POCs. When the user wants to see the live data it is really helpful. Customers who use live data (airport information, call centers), can easily use this.
  • Lumira enables higher management to evaluate budgets and expenses by using combined data on customers or products to discover results and performance.
  • [It works well when] a sales team or mangement needs to quickly identify focus areas in their sales and other areas.
  • For an audit purpose, they can define the reports and graphs easily.
  • Built in with BO suite is good, users need to take separate licenses for using this.
In SAP products this is the only tool from a look and feel perspective.

This is used by many of our C users as well as senior level and mid senior level managers to view reports in both visual formats as well as tabular reports. We are able to create cool visual reports for a lot of monthly, quarterly and yearly sales and revenue and forecast analysis.
  • Charting
  • Hierarchy
  • Filtering
  • Quick analysis on real time data
  • Easy connectivity with SAP HANA data source
  • More design features in report
  • Style based reporting
  • Ready to use icons in graphical report
Mainly suitable for use with SAP HANA data sources with real time analysis capability. I would like to get rid of the limitation of 1,000,000 data pointers to view in Lumira. As we work with huge data sets, this shouldn't be a limitation. Enterprise business always handles a lot more data pointers at a time.

The principal business problems that we solved with SAP BusinessObjects Lumira was data visualization and BI analytics for finance in industry.
I'm computer engineer and I think this program helped me a lot to improve my skills In BI, data mining, etc. This programs helps a lot to solve the problems.
  • Easy to create dashboards without coding
  • Allows [you to] select Excel, delimited, HANA, SQL, Oracle, column date, number format, etc.
  • Can apply different filters to different visualizations, however compositions need to be changed.
  • Sharing features like publishing to team, BI platform and before publishing giving rights like controlling whether the receiver is only to view or edit to collaborate.
  • Make it more easy to use.
  • Creating custom measure is a bit time consuming.
  • No option to zoom in visualization room.

Working with Toyota, and all departments are using the tool. This was introduced by me in the org and people started preferring it over QlikView, but since the tool is restricted to 64 bit OS for developers, a few key users find this to be a hurdle, as they are still on 32 bit because some other tools in the organization don't work well on 64 bit OD.

The tool is widely used to addresses national sales compared to the market study, and the overall service division comparison for the timely servicing and parts sold.
  • Presentation of data the way we want
  • Bit easier to use compared to dashboard designer and QlikView
  • Can be published in the BO Enterprise and can be shared and scheduled the way required by the user
  • Restricted to 64 bit OS only
  • Getting new versions and new features every 2 / 3 months
  • Crashes if huge amount is data is selected to analyse

I utilized it for making real time decision making by making use of SAP HANA at the backend

It was mainly used by independent consultant to quickly produce some report, mainly used for some data-crunching.
  • Beautiful visualization (including heatmap that can be hard to procude with other tools).
  • It is very easy to prepare data for consumption.
  • In general, ease to use.
  • Sometime we would like to have more flexibility on the reporting capabilities.
  • Lack of scripting capabilities. We would like to create some custom plugin / visualization that our collaborators might re-use.
Lumira is well suited when you want to do some quick data crunching and produce reports that you Excel cannot handle (for example creating a meaningful heatmap).

Exploring Lumira as a self service tool for BI audience.
In the initial phase, would create stories and user training to promote.
  • A drop down menu on page 1 can control objects across all pages.
  • Different color scheme and control over selection.
  • Data export and filter option right at click on the object.
  • Pie charts, columns charts, and other type charts - tool needs more control in terms of data labeling and visualization.

I had tried a trial version of SAP Lumira for learning purpose and I found it awesome. I would recommend other IT professionals to try the application at least once and many would end up implementing it for an effective data visualization and report creation.
  • Data extraction is fast.
  • Very user friendly interface, creating reports made so easy with this.
  • Different visualization for same data makes analysis easier.
  • Merging data and extraction from different sources can be made easier.
Frankly speaking, I have not faced a situation where I found this less appropriate. There might be some unexplored areas by me where Lumira would be less appropriate but right now, NO from me.
