Citrix was our oldest virtual environment and it was tired when we retired it fully. But when testing newer systems it would have taken more time and was not as easily adaptable to grow our system. Hyper-V may be the basic MS virtual environment but the configuration of LUNs and Sans to provide storage would have escalated our time enormously.

Scale HC3 vs. VMware

We did not evaluate any other Hyper-Converged solutions, but we previously used VMware vCenter, vSphere, ESXi and we piloted Microsoft Azure. All of them had higher costs and recurring costs that were not necessarily associated with Scale. We explored staying with VMware and also a couple of cloud solutions for migrating our data center, and none were as good of a fit as Scale was.

Unitrends is a good appliance but does not allow the failover that HC3 allows. Unitrends does allow file-level backup and restore, while Scale has yet to offer this option. The biggest reason we choose Scale was to reduce our footprint while maintaining a safe restore and backup plan.

Scale Computing had zero pressure tactic and delivered on every word they said and more. The pricing was on par with the competitors, but I was getting the high end of Scale's solution while with the others I was getting their low end. Without a doubt we made the perfect choice going with Scale Computing.

Multiple vendors, multiple systems, multiple contracts, multiple licenses, maintenance and support, all gone with a Scale Computing HC3 system. One system, one vendor, one support, fewer headaches and problems to solve. Devote your time to running the business and not minding the infrastructure. Scale made it an easy choice to build a virtual environment.

When we implemented our first HC3 cluster almost 5 years ago, we also reviewed options from Dell, HP, and Nutanix and found they just didn't stack up to what we saw in Scale Computing HC3, particularly with their price point. Being a school, IT budgets are always very tight so it was great to find a solution that met all our needs and budget requirements.

We considered Simplivity and Nutanix. HC3 compared well against both, seemed more flexible from a hardware standpoint, and allowed for easier incremental refresh and expansion. HC3 also eliminated the need and cost for VMware.

The fact that everything is integrated is fantastic. "One throat to choke" should something go wrong. I do not have to worry about if this software update is going to interfere with this hardware version....or vice versa. They check and recheck before they start pushing updates out. Sometimes that is sort of frustrating because I know there is some sort of update I want in the pipeline; but if I really want, they can get me upgraded before the public release. All of this and it is not even an alpha/beta release.....more of a post-beta if you will. I have done this twice and have never seen a single issue because of it.

Lean and mean. For simple and smaller infrastructures, it meets all the bullets of a complex hyper-converged or converged solution at a very reasonable budget, and is MUCH easier to implement.

Simplivity is not true hyper-converged, it keeps all the complexity of VMWare and SAN and the required management.
Nutanix is not open about their system performance.
Scale won the race by sending a test unit and letting us have a go at it. They are fully open about what their system does and let us test in any way.

  • VM Ware
In small business scenarios where you have 15 VMs or less Scale makes a good product that gives a scalable performance compared to a VM setup that uses physical servers tied to a storage device. Not having to manage the storage layer saves headaches and allows admins more time to do other tasks. The competitive and personal communications I received while working on our first purchase with Scale hardware was a great experience and I felt valued as a potential customer and that they genuinely wanted my business.
