Recently we started testing Leostream on our nodes in hopes of replacing Remote Desktop Server usage. We are very excited by the ability to spin up multiple desktop machines off of one image that our users can remote into and run in house software without having to build, install, and license a Windows RDS machine.

We run applications such as domain controllers, remote desktop, SQL Servers and line of business applications. Scale allows us to provide the resources these applications need to run and allows us to optimize utilization of compute on our virtual servers. To add additional resources we can purchase additional nodes to add CPU, Storage and RAM with relative ease.

Our Scale HC3 cluster hosts all of our services. A number of (mostly) MS SQL database servers host the data for the application servers. Applications hosted include ERP software, appraisal software, and process management software. The most recent application added was information management software, and it runs just as well on this cluster as previously on VMWare.

Recently, one of our server virtual machines was out of space. We were able to add more storage when it was needed and with any unnecessary downtime. Ok, because SCALE is so awesome, I was able to add an additional 20GB’s to the C: drive., thereby fixing our space issue in moments.

We have all of our applications running on Scale if was easy to setup. I like the fact that I can easily adjust memory, processor, and drive space to the application needs.

We have run many line-of-business applications on Scale Computing including the below. Our experience with these critical applications has been good, however it's important to realize the impact of storage tier planning prior to deployment.

Microsoft RDS
Microsoft SQL
Microsoft Active Directory

Caterpillar – Terrain Grade Control Control

Jigsaw\Hexagon – MineOps Drilling and Blasting and Dispatch System

Alan Bradley\Rockwell – Plant operations\PLC

KACE – System Management and deployment

We run our ERP, QMS, and all virtual desktops and servers on Scale HC3. When adding our ERP it was decided we should add an additional node. We added that node and within minutes the workloads from existing nodes were spreading across the new one as well. The scalability of the HC3 system allows us to change desktop and server workloads at will on the fly and with virtually no interruption to productivity. Users never know when changes are made except for things just keep getting better or faster.

We run multiple SQL servers, DCs and print servers as well as NVR and Access control. Though proper planning is required to expand things like the NVR we have found that the reps at Scale have usually seen what we're trying to do before and have been able to provide proposals that fit without overselling or sneaking things into the quote that we don't need and wouldn't use.

We run Microsoft Active Directory off of our production Scale Cluster, while also incorporating Unix-based systems. Expanding your cluster, or cluster resources merely requires adding the appropriate node(s). The process to incorporate new nodes does not require any significant effort and takes very little time to install (as was our experience for installing our current production Scale cluster). It is awesome that Scale HC3 is hardware agnostic; you choose your hardware platform.

Active Directory, with 2 primary and 2 backup domain controllers. We have run multiple anti-virus servers, file server, web server, database servers, as well as dozens of proprietary mission-critical application servers. In our one year of using them, we are happy to report fewer errors and issues than we experienced under VMware.

One instance that comes to mind with our file server is a user complained of a new file disappearing off a network share just a few hours after placing it there. They reported placing it around 8 a.m. and went back shortly after 11 a.m. and it was missing. We were able to pull the hourly backups (9 a.m., 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. backups) of that drive, add all three backups as drives onto the production server and simply copy the missing file back into the share (about 3 minutes of our time). We then investigated which hour saw the file disappear and this led us to what caused the file to disappear, at which point, we dropped the extra drives from the server again. This showed us, the power of its backup imaging and the scalability of adding storage to an existing machine.

Our mission critical applications include the following. Everything so far has been running as it should. It was a bit painful to migrate our existing VMware VM's over. We decided to do the cold migration to save on costs. You have to be ready for some downtime with this method.

RDS Farm.
Exchange on prem.
SQL production and test environments.
Telnet servers.

BI, System of Record, MS AD, SIEM, IAM, DB, data warehouse. Seemless transition from a functionality perspective. Found it was easier and less business impact to rebuild systems than migrate when size was exceeding 1TB for overall storage. Experienced licensing issues when trying to change MS licenses from retail to VLSC. This is more of a MS issue, but is good to be aware of during your transition.

MS Server 2016 and MS Server 2019 were running with several features added on. The server had at least 10 virtualized instances of OS running at the same time and never had any issues. And there is something very important to be considered in this case. All of these services were running on one server, while the other one was running only for snapshots and backup purposes.

Our entire unstructured file system and authentication system runs on Scale Computing HC3. We are able to add terabytes of storage at the drop of a hat, spin up new controllers quickly and easily, and when it comes time to expand beyond the hardware capacity, adding new nodes is a snap.

One of the many applications we run on Scale is our companies' ERP system. It requires a lot of memory and disk space to run, but it handles it with no problems.

We run multiple SQL and other database servers on the scale and have been able to easily provision additional hardware as required. We run nearly all of our business-critical application servers on the HC3 as well. Performance and uptime have improved significantly.

We currently run an Inventory Management system for a manufacturing company on the Scale platform. It is literally the life blood of the company as everyone in the company uses it to track their product from start to finish. This particular application releases monthly updates and Scale has been an excellent way for use to test deployment of updates and move them into production.

The first systems that I created on the HC3 clusters was a backup server and a file server. We were able to quickly get the data transferred and now have several layers of protection from lost, corrupted or maliciously attacked files. Since then we have added several domain controllers at each location and other business critical application servers. Eventually I plan to have 90% of my servers running as VMs on the Scale systems.

For security reasons I rather not list applications we are running but rest assured our entire organization is on Scale. From AD, DNS, Fileservers, to security software we use Scale for everything and without issue. I was worried that some of our applications would not work on Scale but I have never had an issue and look forward to a long partnership.

Most SCADA vendors are behind the times in terms of utilizing modern infrastructure. If your application runs on common Windows or Linux distributions, you can absolutely run them on HC3. Scale certifies about two dozen operating systems on the HC3 platform, ensuring compatibility and supportability. If the SCADA solution utilizes software replication, there are architectural decisions that should be made regarding how to design for true DR, but the beauty of HC3 is its flexibility -- you can use the built-in software replication, let HC3 replicate guest VMs, or use a combination of those two approaches, like we do.

Scale allowed us to load balance our services. Rather than have one application server supplying antivirus protection, print services, and windows updates I now have three separate VMs that run more efficient resulting in faster service.
