What is ScienceLogic SL1?

The ScienceLogic SL1 platform aims to enable companies to digitally transform themselves by removing the difficulty of managing complex, distributed IT services. SL1 uses patented discovery techniques to find everything in a network, so users get visibility across all technologies and vendors running anywhere in data centers or clouds. The vendor states the advantage of SL1 is that it collects and analyzes millions of data points across an IT universe (made up of infrastructure, network, applications, and business services), to help users make sense of it all, share data, and automate IT processes.

With SL1, the user can:

  • See everything across cloud and distributed architectures. Discover all IT components—–across physical, virtual, and cloud. Collect, merge, and store a variety of data in a clean, normalized data lake.
  • Contextualize data through relationship mapping and machine learning (ML) for actionable insights. Use this context to understand the impact of infrastructure and applications on business service health and risk, accelerate root cause analysis, and execute recommended actions.
  • Act on data that is shared across technologies and IT ecosystem in real time. Apply multi-directional integrations to automate workflows at cloud scale.

ScienceLogic SL1 is a good tool for being a mile wide and two inches deep--it does a majority of things well, but the aforementioned tools are not only more expensive but cater to specific trades. Prognosis is centered around collab--LogicMonitor and Nimsoft being server/cloud, Spectrum being network.

ScienceLogic SL1 is the only platform that provides a complete solution beyond monitoring and alerting. The cost to deploy is much lower than all of the products listed. While each of them have their strengths over some aspect of SL1, ScienceLogic SL1 brings all of the capabilities together in one place and is extensible enough to improve in those areas or integrate to take advantage of the strength of the other product. ScienceLogic SL1 is an operations management platform which places it ahead of the pack for any decision maker in my opinion. I say that someone who had not heard of ScienceLogic prior to this implementation who quickly became a believer in the platform going forward.

BMC TrueSight Operation Management, Infrastructure Management, Discovery, and CMDB can be all replaced by SL1. This is pretty impressive. However, the BMC product, while more complicated to install and manage, has some advantages. There are capability management and application visibility that can give you a very detailed view of what is happening in your applications. Entuity can be replaced as well. But Entuity is excellent when it comes to discovering the netowrk connections. Compared to it, SL1 excels when it comes to monitoring of the non-network infrastructure and event management. And there is the price point.

SL1 stacks up well against the competition. The only product for the cost and features that compares is Solarwinds. Like any network monitoring product, the backbone needs to be up/down monitoring. SL1 does this well and allows for the flexibility to integrate and automate actions after an event is triggered. The main difference between Solarwinds and SL1 is that Solarwinds has more modules that provide IPAM, Netflow, and configuration management. With configuration management in SL1, SL1 could be a real game-changer of a product in the network monitoring space.

We have found ScienceLogic SL1 well suited to both MSP and Enterprise monitoring at scale and where a high degree of integration with other systems or customization of monitoring approaches is required. It might, however, be overkill for smaller enterprises where the requirements are more straightforward.

The coverage and ease for what we need is just better. Most of the other solutions are just point tools that don't bring many functions together or are missing pieces to be successful.

ScienceLogic SL1 was the only option for WYSIWYG dashboards when we selected them in 2009 and noticeably cheaper. Other vendors are now catching up and ScienceLogic is starting to price themselves out of their market segment.

ScienceLogic is a much more mature and robust than the previously used platforms (that are not even available in the selection above). SL is the whole package when it comes to a customizable solution for monitoring, ticketing, and external system integration. They are constantly improving the offering.
