What is ScienceLogic SL1?

The ScienceLogic SL1 platform aims to enable companies to digitally transform themselves by removing the difficulty of managing complex, distributed IT services. SL1 uses patented discovery techniques to find everything in a network, so users get visibility across all technologies and vendors running anywhere in data centers or clouds. The vendor states the advantage of SL1 is that it collects and analyzes millions of data points across an IT universe (made up of infrastructure, network, applications, and business services), to help users make sense of it all, share data, and automate IT processes.


With SL1, the user can:

  • See everything across cloud and distributed architectures. Discover all IT components—–across physical, virtual, and cloud. Collect, merge, and store a variety of data in a clean, normalized data lake.
  • Contextualize data through relationship mapping and machine learning (ML) for actionable insights. Use this context to understand the impact of infrastructure and applications on business service health and risk, accelerate root cause analysis, and execute recommended actions.
  • Act on data that is shared across technologies and IT ecosystem in real time. Apply multi-directional integrations to automate workflows at cloud scale.

ScienceLogic replaced manual intervention, where we had a technician visually and manually monitoring our devices. ScienceLogic also replaced or will be replacing our current monitoring tool Zenoss. The latter was suited for standard devices and/or standard monitoring (e.g. CPU, memory, etc), however and with our involving technology, our customers were asking for more flexibility and more types of monitoring. This is where ScienceLogic came in, as it is allowing more customized monitoring.

Nagios & Solarwinds. These two products are for server & network devices monitoring.
(1) In order to centralize the monitoring console, use one console to monitor all.
(2) ScienceLogic SL1 has open restful API for the application to send out application event alerts.
(3) ScienceLogic SL1 has an event handling function and also can integrate automation runbook function.

Nimsoft and Zenoss. We wanted to look for a holistic product we could develop as a one-stop-shop and make SPOGs for customers in their environment instead of them managing five or six different links in a "Frankensteined" health portal. ScienceLogic SL1 still has a ways to go but it's getting there.

SMARTs was a dated and limited solution. The integrated and extensible capability of ScienceLogic was the driving reason behind SL1 adoption. It was also part of a new ECO System of fewer tools and more integration developed by the architecture organization.

BMC TrueSight and Entuity were both replaced by SL1. This has reduced the vendor list and simplified vendor management slightly. Having one tool allowed us, in this particular case, to re-allocate employees to other billable (compared to running back-office systems) tasks. Overall, support costs have dropped as well. One thing to mention: SL is smaller than the big players in the AIOps market. This allows them for quicker updates and very good support.

Old monitoring tool based on old technology. SL1 monitoring offers new capabilities and could cover cloud or hybrid solution by deploying SL1 appliances on premises or on cloud, or by using cloud API to monitor virtual servers. Another point is the agentless monitoring, other old solutions need to deploy agent on target devices.
