What is ScienceLogic SL1?

The ScienceLogic SL1 platform aims to enable companies to digitally transform themselves by removing the difficulty of managing complex, distributed IT services. SL1 uses patented discovery techniques to find everything in a network, so users get visibility across all technologies and vendors running anywhere in data centers or clouds. The vendor states the advantage of SL1 is that it collects and analyzes millions of data points across an IT universe (made up of infrastructure, network, applications, and business services), to help users make sense of it all, share data, and automate IT processes.

With SL1, the user can:

  • See everything across cloud and distributed architectures. Discover all IT components—–across physical, virtual, and cloud. Collect, merge, and store a variety of data in a clean, normalized data lake.
  • Contextualize data through relationship mapping and machine learning (ML) for actionable insights. Use this context to understand the impact of infrastructure and applications on business service health and risk, accelerate root cause analysis, and execute recommended actions.
  • Act on data that is shared across technologies and IT ecosystem in real time. Apply multi-directional integrations to automate workflows at cloud scale.

ScienceLogic is still in the early stages with our deployment, but to date, has allowed us to have integrated event to incident, discovery to configuration items, and escalations. We are building more advanced automations which will provide value to our clients.

Integration with our ITSM tool has allowed us to automate CMDB population, as well as provide a real-time enrichment of that CMDB data, allowing us to remove many of the processes we have historically performed manually. Likewise with the Incident Integration, where automated INC creation, real-time updates, and ultimate resolution alleviates the need to swivel-chair between the monitoring and ITSM tools.

We've integrated ScienceLogic with ServiceNow to automate incident creation, which has been incredibly helpful for our Level 1 Managed Services staff. We are looking to expand upon that and in specific cases, automatically pull additional information into the ServiceNow incident and potentially close out the incident if possible.

ScienceLogic is the backbone of our infrastructure monitoring. We base a lot of our reactive and proactive processes around it. We use it to keep track of storage usage, memory, and more. We also use it to alert our team of any issues that VMware may create using the API.

The primary automation and workflow integrations we use are with our ITSM platform. This allows us (via API) to automatically have tickets created, updated, resolved, etc. This, combined with ScienceLogic's CMDB integration, allows us to consider ScienceLogic the ultimate "source of truth" within our systems.

It uses soap rest API based integration and gets a data feed from multiple underlying monitoring tools for event consolidation and event correlation. It has the capability to monitor os, database network apps, and server hardware. It also provides the capability to identify and provide visibility into the ecosystem. It helps in identifying the probable root cause of the problem and helps in bringing the efficiency in running its operations.

SL1 integrates directly into our case management system, and allows the generation of cases as soon as an issue occurs. Whether for customer infrastructure or internal infrastructure, being able to quickly diagnose and triage issues has been invaluable since the migration to SL1. We were able to quickly integrate our automated deployment process into SL1 to allow for seamless monitoring as soon as a device is created.

ScienceLogic provides escalation of incidents via ServcieNow. We have recently built out an automation team to begin looking at the top time/resource saving actions that we could utilize the tool for. Like many organizations; the resource investment needs to be made to harness the full potential of the application. In healthcare resource margins are tight. Anyway ScienceLogic could help with the justification would be helpful.

We utilize automation and workflow processes in many ways. One way that has really helped us out is with the integrations between ScienceLogic and ServiceNow. We are able to respond to events which may result in the automated process resolving the event, or collecting enough information that the technical people reading the data can quickly identify what is wrong and take action.
