What is ScienceLogic SL1?

The ScienceLogic SL1 platform aims to enable companies to digitally transform themselves by removing the difficulty of managing complex, distributed IT services. SL1 uses patented discovery techniques to find everything in a network, so users get visibility across all technologies and vendors running anywhere in data centers or clouds. The vendor states the advantage of SL1 is that it collects and analyzes millions of data points across an IT universe (made up of infrastructure, network, applications, and business services), to help users make sense of it all, share data, and automate IT processes.

With SL1, the user can:

  • See everything across cloud and distributed architectures. Discover all IT components—–across physical, virtual, and cloud. Collect, merge, and store a variety of data in a clean, normalized data lake.
  • Contextualize data through relationship mapping and machine learning (ML) for actionable insights. Use this context to understand the impact of infrastructure and applications on business service health and risk, accelerate root cause analysis, and execute recommended actions.
  • Act on data that is shared across technologies and IT ecosystem in real time. Apply multi-directional integrations to automate workflows at cloud scale.

It is used for billing for customers via monitored elements. We use it to populate a CMDB in ServiceNow, as well as ticket creation and resolution with ServiceNow. Ticket enrichment and remediation automation reduce repetitive tasks and overall reduce manual time spent on processes by the NOC. Overall, these automations and integrations provide reduced cost and increased agility for serving the customer and internal systems.

It works by manual intervention for most of processes (as request to start monitoring/discover) however there are automatic process specially for the cloud environment, using events triggering runbooks to process required information in the tool as well as the tool being source of events to another processes (as triggering events to other tools in order to some action to be taken).

We have explored the capability of integrating with multiple complementary platforms to provide a consolidated view of the environments we are supporting. This is a particular strength of ScienceLogic SL1 that we will be exploiting more in the coming months/years. The challenge is to make the platforms being integrated understand that these are complementary integrations that make both platforms more important in the enterprise.

  1. SL1 automates the discovery of the new customer infrastructure on-prem, in the cloud, etc. This allows for quicker onboarding. Having said that. it is still a subject of the security review in many DCs and this (although not a technical or capability issue) tends to impact the deployment times there.
  2. CMDB in ServiceNow is updated automatically. This allows security, change, and asset management to work on the same data!
  3. Incidents are raised in the service desk as SL1 automates the daily checks and performance management.

An orchestrator will be used to create or to remove virtual servers, and also to deploy new applications. Through API requests the orchestrator tool could add or remove device in the SL1 scope, it could also stop and restart monitoring, by example for downtimes.

SL1 integrates into our processes as first line of troubleshooting. Through RBA's and other built in automations, we are able to provide the NOC and support teams with automated outputs to help jump start any troubleshooting. We continuously see our network downtime decrease as we continue to innovate and automate processes in SL1.

SL1 events are synchronized to ServiceNow to create tickets that can be addressed by our ECC or the customer. Custom RBAs can perform many routine tasks when detected.
