What is ScienceLogic SL1?

The ScienceLogic SL1 platform aims to enable companies to digitally transform themselves by removing the difficulty of managing complex, distributed IT services. SL1 uses patented discovery techniques to find everything in a network, so users get visibility across all technologies and vendors running anywhere in data centers or clouds. The vendor states the advantage of SL1 is that it collects and analyzes millions of data points across an IT universe (made up of infrastructure, network, applications, and business services), to help users make sense of it all, share data, and automate IT processes.

With SL1, the user can:

  • See everything across cloud and distributed architectures. Discover all IT components—–across physical, virtual, and cloud. Collect, merge, and store a variety of data in a clean, normalized data lake.
  • Contextualize data through relationship mapping and machine learning (ML) for actionable insights. Use this context to understand the impact of infrastructure and applications on business service health and risk, accelerate root cause analysis, and execute recommended actions.
  • Act on data that is shared across technologies and IT ecosystem in real time. Apply multi-directional integrations to automate workflows at cloud scale.

It is getting better at integrating, but not all the pieces of data are easily available in the API to build the connections we need. That being said it is more open than most systems, but there are areas to improve in allowing getting bulk data sets easier and faster than the current method.

With the rest-based API native to SL1, a variety of ETL and web-based technologies and pull and push data to SL1 for billing, incident management, automation, and alerting. These capabilities are furthered with the implementation of the integration server by science logic providing 2-way synchronization with Service Now.

ScienceLogic is integrated with ServiceNow, allowing incidents to be created when there's an issue. If configured incorrectly, this is an absolute mess and creates a ton of unnecessary paperwork. If configured correctly, it can be a powerful tool for assigning work to teams that need to chase down and issue and for creating a paper trail for issues.

Currently, we are utilizing ScienceLogic in a ticket escalation fashion. Depending on the severity of the event generated in ScienceLogic determines the priority within our ticketing system. Depending on the priority within the ticketing system, this determines if an outage warrants paging an analyst. For instance, a server going down would be much different than a redundant PSU going offline.

We have largely left Sciencelogic as a standalone system in our environment. While it is the backbone of our alerting and monitoring internal processes, our company doesn't use much in the way of automation for remediation. We have the system generate alerts, that are sent out via email and SMS (via an HTTP API call to a separate SMS gateway) that go to a team of engineers for investigation/potential remediation.

Doesn't integrate very well. It takes a lot of man-hours to try and figure out how to get this system to work with other systems, or even figure out if we can use it with other systems. Most of the time, we just have the other systems like Meraki email to ScienceLogic so it will have a ticket we can use to log notes and fixes.

We integrate it with ServiceNow and automated to have first level troubleshooting like availability check, once we receive the alerts.
The vast majority of integration and automation is limited by what SyncSever and our own integrations with ServiceNow for Host Composites,

We haven't begun looking at the automation piece right now. The only workflow we have is Sciencelogic is our MoM tool and all critical events are to create tickets in our ITSM tool which is Remedy currently and ServiceNow down the road.

We need to have a single server or multiple servers configured for the various ScienceLogic components to work together. Then device or server details can be configured to be monitored. An agent can also be installed in certain servers to be monitored, as it keeps communicating with the main system.
