What is ScienceLogic SL1?

The ScienceLogic SL1 platform aims to enable companies to digitally transform themselves by removing the difficulty of managing complex, distributed IT services. SL1 uses patented discovery techniques to find everything in a network, so users get visibility across all technologies and vendors running anywhere in data centers or clouds. The vendor states the advantage of SL1 is that it collects and analyzes millions of data points across an IT universe (made up of infrastructure, network, applications, and business services), to help users make sense of it all, share data, and automate IT processes.

With SL1, the user can:

  • See everything across cloud and distributed architectures. Discover all IT components—–across physical, virtual, and cloud. Collect, merge, and store a variety of data in a clean, normalized data lake.
  • Contextualize data through relationship mapping and machine learning (ML) for actionable insights. Use this context to understand the impact of infrastructure and applications on business service health and risk, accelerate root cause analysis, and execute recommended actions.
  • Act on data that is shared across technologies and IT ecosystem in real time. Apply multi-directional integrations to automate workflows at cloud scale.

We use ServiceNow for the ticketing system, and it integrates very well with this product. However, some improvements deem it necessary to improve the operational efficiency of the support teams. For example, Sciencelogic triggers ServiceNow ticket alerts when an incident occurs but doesn't close the case automatically when the incident self-heals or the issue gets resolved.

We have built an integration between ScienceLogic and our NCCM system (Network Configuration & Compliance Management).
This integration automates the addition of newly discovered devices to a scheduled backup, and allows for generating EM7 events when, for instance, backups are failed. The integration also allows quick links from a device in one of the systems to the same device in the other.
We also use the ScienceLogic REST API to pull configuration information and transfer this information to other internal systems.

Its helping us get business KPIs tracked and monitored linking to underlying infra and apps which helps us manage our spend effectively and invest in areas of growth. We also see a potential for tools consolidation once we are rolled out to all areas and we see a huge cost savings.

We integrate from our CRM system, Epicor ITSM (which itself is highly customized), to control which systems are monitored and when. Systems are discovered, with certain types of monitoring applied via templates, controlled by Epicor ITSM. If a system is decommissioned, it is auto-removed in SciLo by our integration. This integration, however, has its own technical debt, which can be solved with better API documentation from SciLo.

Right now, the main runbook that we have us updating ServiceNow and creating tickets. We have not yet purchased ServiceNow integration. We also are currently working on projects that will include runbooks that will reach out to APIs and restart certain devices, as well as pull data from those. Projects like this coming down the pipeline will very deeply involve runbook automation.

We use SL to integrate with some customer networks. This allows us to know exactly how our equipment is performing in an off-net perspective. Working with professional services has opened the door to new ways of thinking and new revenue streams. The process itself collects performance data, imports it into the system, displays it in a human-readable format and allows us to generate custom reports on it.
