What is ScienceLogic SL1?

The ScienceLogic SL1 platform aims to enable companies to digitally transform themselves by removing the difficulty of managing complex, distributed IT services. SL1 uses patented discovery techniques to find everything in a network, so users get visibility across all technologies and vendors running anywhere in data centers or clouds. The vendor states the advantage of SL1 is that it collects and analyzes millions of data points across an IT universe (made up of infrastructure, network, applications, and business services), to help users make sense of it all, share data, and automate IT processes.

With SL1, the user can:

  • See everything across cloud and distributed architectures. Discover all IT components—–across physical, virtual, and cloud. Collect, merge, and store a variety of data in a clean, normalized data lake.
  • Contextualize data through relationship mapping and machine learning (ML) for actionable insights. Use this context to understand the impact of infrastructure and applications on business service health and risk, accelerate root cause analysis, and execute recommended actions.
  • Act on data that is shared across technologies and IT ecosystem in real time. Apply multi-directional integrations to automate workflows at cloud scale.

It is not that smooth. At times, it works very smoothly, but when it gets stuck, only engineering resolves such things, and that takes time, which negatively impacts customers and thinks of a migration scenario. PowerPack upgrade and ScienceLogic SL1 upgrade should be focused on properly because that is something ScienceLogic SL1 will have its importance in the market than other tools. Either it should be done by the ScienceLogic SL1 Team alone, or proper steps should be provided. Other SaaS solutions vendor does both as part of PoiwerPack feature availability.

A smooth implementation depends on the knowledge of the implementers. Our own company implements Sl1 on the different customer environments. When they encountered hurdles, they were dependent on other resources to help them figure out what the issues were, before they could continue. This puts a lot of strain on the project and the timelines they have to complete it in.

Implementation is smooth if we are to just support the out-of-the-box features available in ScienceLogic. For any custom requirement, having to go to SL1 Professional Services is the worst part of procuring this suite.
And more often than not, SL1 Professional Services also ask to raise feature request.
So, you subscribe to Professional Services to only hear back from them that "This feature is not supported and needs to have a separate feature request". At times frustrating.

ScienceLogic SL1 implementation is very straightforward and has never been an issue. Deploying the architecture easy to implement if going to be on-prem. On SaaS, it reduces the risk of maintaining the DB. Collectors can be deployed based on the environment. Based on the load and device counts, the collectors' HA can be configured for a SaaS environment.

Basically I am deploying SL monitoring for multiple customers. Here most of technology-monitoring is covred by PP, but some must be still developed. The selfmonitoring is a problem, ie. as agentless monitoring you sometimes find the device is not monitored for a longer time - there is no warning / event / alarm which could be detecting that.

Love to use Science logic tool as our first monitoring tool to provide services to the customer. Auto restart feature in Sl1 will allow us to get event when those crucial services has not started after server reboots and also minimize the P1's that we have as a result of that.

For our implementation we had their support team assist with getting the intial collectors setup and our cluster group as well as providing the additional training we need to be able to carry on with the rest of our customers. They helped to create rules that we had on our old system
