Keeping Secure with Secret Server
We use Secret Server not only as a place to store passwords but also as a tool to rotate our passwords on a consistent basis on multiple platforms. We also use it as a "jump host" via RDP and SSH. Mainly our IT department uses it, but we also have other departments using it as well. Hopefully, in the future, Secret Server will allow you to use HTTPS as one of its proxies.

We tried using 1Password, and they have a great mobile app, but they weren't able to do the password rotation on our devices. Secret Server was basically our top option after reviewing.

Secret Server: more than a password manager.
Serves as a password vault and rotates credentials on schedule. It helps solve problems with managing and remembering where your service accounts are running.
- Works well with RBAC, workflow for access requests, and approvals for third parties.
- Allows monitoring and recording of remote sessions.
- Available for on-premise and cloud.
- Implementation can take some time to get everything running.
- Does not actually find all your service accounts.
- Helps keep up with compliance.
- Reduces complication when changing passwords and having unknown systems fail due to the password change.
- Makes things easy to decommission as you can tell what service accounts were used.
There were not very many solutions that provided the entire package of taking an account from creation and deactivating it when no longer needed, as well as providing the discovery of unknown service accounts. Other solutions like RoboForm and LastPass did not offer the ability to manage your service accounts and added layers of complication to ensure security.

Secret Server
Our IT department utilizes Secret Server to store our passwords for our privileged accounts. There are several departments we currently support the use of Secret Server for.
- Role-Based access. Users only have access to the secrets they need within their department based on their role.
- Secret Server authenticates with Active Directory for easy connectivity.
- It can be difficult at times figuring out how to architect a new group within the solution. Often times it takes a couple attempts to get it right.
- Privileged Password Safe. Great for keeping those super important passwords all in one place.
- The solution has amazing logging reports. As an admin you can see what actions users take, whether they view a secret or display the password.
We've used Secret Server for years and don't have a valid reason to go away from it.
