We use Securly Filter in our K-8 educational institutions to keep students safe online from both active and passive online threats. Part of the challenge is ensuring a safe online experience for students using school-issued Chromebooks - both on AND off-campus. This is accomplished by an easy one-click install certificate. Securly Filter is therefore able to filter both on campus and off-campus, using Securly Filter DNS servers. We are easily able to set different keyword/category blocks and whitelists for both students, staff, and the administration using Securly Filter Google Classroom LDAP integration. By assigning different policies to different OUs, we can ensure each of our clients has the necessary access to online materials, while ensuring a baseline security policy. Securly Filter historical browsing logs have also proven useful in cases where a teacher or administrator has needed to review student online activities.
  • Blocks objectionable content
  • Customized profile management by OU.
  • Logging
  • Occasional issues with SSL conflicts
  • Our smartboards do not function unless placed on guest (open) filtering.
  • Better stability on Chrome OS
Securly Filter is well-suited to educational environments with heavily customized internet filtering policies for multiple parties. For example, it may be desirable for teachers to have access to streaming sites such as Youtube. A policy can specify blanket access to sites or Securly Filter allows for temporary whitelisting (logged by the system). It is exceptional for compliance due to its extensive activity logging features. We have been asked on multiple occasions to provide browsing history logs for students in disciplinary proceedings. We have also received requests to monitor for online bullying, for which Securly Filter features some basic out of the box features. It is also reasonably priced and therefore financially suited to many smaller public or private schools.
  • Blocking objectionable content
  • Uptime/Speed
  • Policy customization
  • An increase in client loyalty due to our ability to offer exceptional products for critical needs.
Securly Filter integration with Google Workspace for education makes it an ideal pairing for K-12 institutions. It has a friendlier portal and more intuitive UI, particularly when retrieving activity logs. The policy customization is also far easier and responsive. That being said, it does not provide a full-fledged firewall like Untangle NG (nor many of the other useful features from NG, such as simple-to-deploy VPN).

We have Securly Filter for our whole organization. We are an independent preK-12 school that has iPads in all classrooms K-5, and 1 to 1 in 6-12. Securly really does a wonderful job filtering content on the internet and keeping us inline with COPA conformity!
  • For education, it is setup for blocking the right type of sites, we do not want students on, right out of the "box".
  • The management is easily integrated with Google for Education users.
  • You do not have to have an Active Directory to use Securly effectively!!
  • If you have mobile devices 1 to 1, this is your best filter period!!
  • Really nothing comes to mind. Everything about this product I love!!
As I stated earlier, if you have iPads in a 1 to 1 usage, [Securly Filter] is your best filter. Students cannot break it or mess with any settings on a device that has an MDM setup.
  • No work around or internet proxy filter bypassing.
  • Students have no ability to remove the filter from device
  • It gives us insight into the things students are searching for in search engines and alerts us to things that are not appropriate.
  • It just works with limited management input!!
Securly [Filter] is designed with Education in mind and the other products I have used are not that way. I had to block porn and adult content on all other setups. Securly has those blocked from the start. Education web-sites are complex and and Securly handles that with ease!

  • Content filtering
  • Inappropriate searches on search engines
  • Ability to flag and send alert from a keyword search
  • none come to mind

We've deployed Securly Filter at dozens of schools using Chromebooks and iPads, and especially with the take-home use of devices over the last year, it has made off-site filtering much easier, and certainly more secure and controllable for school staff. It also helps track down students getting into trouble with school equipment.
  • Easy management of blocked sites.
  • Not easily bypassed on Managed devices.
  • Excellent reporting of web activity.
  • Delegated management is sometimes difficult to get working, requiring undocumented changes.
  • Pricing has gone up for Chrome devices.
  • Syncing is a manual process.
Securly Filter works great in schools with Managed devices, especially if you have a one to one take home program. If you don't have Managed devices, it's possible to work around or disable. If you're not in a school environment, it will still work, but it doesn't seem to be designed with work environments in mind.
  • Easy to use filtering.
  • Easy setup.
  • Solid reporting.
  • Securly has reduced our workload managing filters.
  • Securly makes it quick to respond to user audit requests.
  • Securly is quick to set up.
Securly has a huge advantage over network filters when dealing with the past year of at home learning and take home device programs. It works as well as other device based filters, and it's an exceptionally good deal if you were able to lock in reduced pricing from previous years.

We use Securly to help protect our students and comply with CIPA. We use this across our whole organization and it has allowed us to get away from the physical internet filtering appliances. This has not only saved us from energy consumption but has removed a potential break-point by removing the extra hoop in the network topology.
  • No physical appliance required.
  • Simple deployment for Chrome Books.
  • Simple Windows deployment by forwarding external DNS and pushing certificates via GPO.
  • URL lookup tool not available.
  • Would be nice to have a scheduling feature to change filtering policies/profiles based on time.
Awesome for the education environment, which this was designed for.
  • Fulfills CIPA compliance for K-12
I don't like giving a 10 since everyone always has room for improvement, and while Securly is doing an awesome job, there is still room for improvement across the board.
