SEMrush has proven to be an invaluable tool for users across various industries, helping them improve their SEO strategies and achieve measurable results. With SEMrush, even those without prior knowledge of SEO have been able to boost their rankings and organic visibility over the last 16 months. The software is widely used for campaign management and competitor analysis, particularly in the organic SEO space. Users rely on the Projects feature to track keyword visibility, identify site problems, and monitor link tracking. The Organic Research tab is a favorite among users for analyzing domain rankings and keyword rankings. SEMrush also excels in keyword research, providing users with valuable insights into volume, competition, and difficulty. It aids in determining article topics, optimizing headers, title tags, meta data, and body copy for informational landing pages. Tracking and reporting on rankings for high-value keywords as well as monitoring competitors' rankings are common use cases of SEMrush. The platform also serves as a powerful tool for higher-level industry research and gaining insights into the competitive landscape. Additionally, SEMrush is occasionally utilized for site health metrics and other technical data. Following an extensive adoption by SEO agencies, SEMrush has become the principal tool in their toolbox. This software provides unparalleled information to agencies and clients alike through its advanced features like competitor analysis reports. SEMrush enables agencies to benchmark their SEO campaigns, track progress over time, and gain a competitive advantage in the market. It plays a pivotal role in conducting website audits, formulating solid SEO strategies, creating content marketing plans, and training new SEO professionals on best practices. Furthermore, SEMrush offers comprehensive insights at a reasonable price when compared to other tools available in the market. Its rapid innovation and frequent updates add more functionality regularly, ensuring that users stay ahead of the curve and continue to benefit from cutting-edge features. 2. Consider SEO requirements and compare with other tools. Reviewers emphasize the importance of considering SEO requirements before choosing SEMrush. While they believe SEMrush is a great tool for competitor analysis, users suggest evaluating other options if comparable or superior tools are available at lower costs. They mention that SEMrush is a basic, free tool that does the job, but other tools may be more sophisticated, including the paid version of SEMrush.

Overall, users highly recommend using SEMrush for obtaining large amounts of data on competitors and keywords. We use it for our Earned Media/SEO department specifically. We use it to perform keyword research and perform competitive analyses.
  • Keyword research, ideation, and organization (with the Keyword Magic tool). The way this tool works really helps with our own internal process too
  • Process support - meaning it's very easy to incorporate SEMRush's various tools into a team's process. We are a new team and still building processes and find the workflows within SEMRush to be intuitive and helpful in building our team's processes
  • Competitive information - there are a lot of ways to dive into competitive research, which is great because that's always a big question from clients and from our team as well- what are competitors doing, how are they doing, etc.
  • I wish there was a way to upload a list of keywords you already have and see search volume, etc. This can be achieved through Site Audit or Projects (forget the exact terminology) but it's clunky to do it that bc there's a lot of other things you have to fill out
  • I just need to explore the features more, honestly! I know I'm not using SEMRush to its fullest potential
SEMRush is probably most useful for performing audits, especially during the sales process. Although we still use it for our ongoing clients, it seems less suited for retainer clients within an agency (where there are many clients). It seems to work much more "one-off" versus being able to wrap up a bunch of information for a client and save it.

Semrush provides a comprehensive suite for SEO and digital marketing analysis. I particularly appreciate its intent-based keyword research option, enabling users to align content strategy with specific user intents. With robust analytics and competitor insights, it's a powerful tool for enhancing online visibility. Its user-friendly interface makes it accessible for both beginners and seasoned marketers. Highly recommended for strategic digital campaigns.
  • Keywords Research
  • Backlinks Analysis
  • Pillar topic research
  • Local Grid
  • Accurate Position Tracking
Semrush excels in aiding competitive analysis, enabling businesses to understand their market positioning and identify strategic opportunities. It proves valuable for optimizing content strategies based on user intent, enhancing overall SEO performance. However, it may be less appropriate for businesses with limited digital marketing budgets, as its premium features may not be cost-effective for smaller scale operations.

Semrush is used by both our Marketing team and our Editorial team. Reviewed's Marketing team uses Semrush for paid and earned marketing research, competitive analysis, and tracking performance. Our Editorial team uses multiple research and writing tools that help them make decisions about SEO.
  • Competitor Reporting
  • Keyword Research
  • Ranking Tracking
  • The trend graph in the Keyword Magic report is confusing and should stay static (showing in Jan-Dec order no matter what the month currently is)
  • Most of the data is a day delayed. That seems to be more related to Semrush data sources than anything else
  • Excited about the Top Stories tracking feature, but it's not without its errors. Looking forward to improvements there
Semrush is a great general Marketing tool with a strong focus on SEO and Content Marketing.

In this role, I used Semrush for keyword research to help determine Article topics for the editorial team Headers, title tags, meta data, and body copy for "core" informational landing pages on the site Keyword-rich templated title tags and headers for e-commerce pages I also used it to track and report on rankings for high-value keywords and those we selected/incorporated. Additionally, I used it to track our competitors' rankings for those same keywords. I also used it for higher-level industry research to get a better idea of the competitive landscape. Occasionally I used the platform to look at site health metrics and other technical data, but not on a super consistent basis.
  • Great visuals for keyword position tracking, love that you can see the page that is ranking
  • Enjoyed the auto-generated reporting feature (specifically in the context of keyword position tracking)
  • Shows many different and useful views for competitive research
  • Great templated keyword research tools for those who are not as hands-on with SEO
  • I LOVE the Keyword Magic Tool for honing in on longtail, high-opportunity keywords
  • The auto-generated reports don't get nearly as specific with drilled-down info as I would like. It seems the options are broad but shallow. Especially compared to how good some of the visuals and tables are in-app.
  • Some of the views/research features (like Organic Research/Keyword Gap) are a little redundant in my opinion.
  • I wish keywords for Position Tracking weren't so expensive
  • Some of the keyword data from Google - like volume - is slow to update, so you may be seeing data that is weeks old, which in certain scenarios can be a hindrance.
Semrush is not perfect, but in my experience, it's the one-size-fits-most SEO tool I would recommend to almost anyone (who works on a team/does not mind upgrading to a paid version). It's great for diverse teams - there are features that are basically plug and play, like the Content Marketing tools, that may be good for some team members, while more experienced SEOs can find a lot of value as well from research tools like the Domain Overview tool to take a deep dive into competitors. I'd say research and tracking functions are where Semrush shines. The reporting features will get the job done, but a lot of the data views are much more restricted in the generated reports than they are in-app, which I found annoying. I got a lot of questions in meetings about what some reporting data meant because the options were limited - ie, a "competitor organic performance" metric that was only month-over-month, and super vague, whereas in the app you could look at week-over-week, drill down on metrics, etc. The free version is just okay. I recommend this more for someone whose team is willing to pay for at least the Business level. A lot of the better, more unique functions, like Position Tracking for more than 10 keywords, costs more.

I use Semrush as a college student to practice discovering marketing insights and running SEO campaigns. I have never had an inside view of the software that helps companies run digital marketing strategies before, so having this opportunity with Semrush was amazing. One business problem that Semrush addresses is that many of the great features that they offer are only available through their Trends Subscription plan. I did find that this prevented me from exploring many of the tools and features that they have but at the same time I understand why I didn't have access to them because I did not pay any money for the subscription I currently have which is Pro.
  • Creates Simplified Reports
  • Easily Monitor and Manage Traffic Analytics
  • Allows you to Perform Advanced SEO Tasks with Ease
  • Semrush Only Provides Data for One Search Engine, Google
  • Some Competitive Analysis Features Cost an Additional $200 per Month Extra
  • Their Site is Hard to Use on a Mobile Device
Semrush is well suited for marketers that work in services like SEO, PPC, SMM, Keyword Research, Competitive Research, PR, Content Marketing, Marketing Insights, Campaign Management. As well as for college students in marketing who are learning the what it takes and what it means to be a marketing analysts.

I used Semrush for my Marketing Analytics course at Dean College to better understand Search Engine Optimization. Semrush is a fantastic tool that would be extremely beneficial to any company that wants to improve its marketing.
  • I love how easy it is to use Semrush. It is very use friendly.
  • I also loved the Competitive Analysis and Keyword Research course. That is a great tool to use when comparing your company with your competition.
  • The knowledge that you gain from each individual section of Semrush is truly fascinating.
  • I also am a big fan of the different keyword research knowledge that Semrush shares with you.
  • I only have one suggestion. Semrush was awesome.
  • The tests in the Competitive Analysis course were a little bit difficult at times so I would try to improve them a little bit but honestly, I really enjoyed using Semrush.
I think that Semrush is best suited for any business because Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is absolutely necessary for the success of a business and Semrush really can help improve SEO.

Semrush is used by our entire team of over 150 individuals from 8 different SEO teams, including analysts, project managers, content creators, and website developers. We mainly use Semrush during pre and post-migrations. The 3 main features we use are market research, competitor analysis, and on-site SEO elements.
  • Organic research
  • Domain overview (trends, pages, competitors, keywords)
  • Site audits
  • Toxic backlinks - Semrush shows “toxic backlinks" meanwhile Google does not show them as harmful in Google Search Console.
Semrush is best suited for quick analyses of competition and current trends of overall keyword movement. It is not so appropriate for any conversion or revenue tracking.

Semrush is used in our Marketing Analytics paper, meant for second-year undergraduate students. The tool is used to illustrate how data from third-party platforms can be used to inform marketing decision-making.
  • Easy to use.
  • Great support.
  • Certifications that complement the use of the platform.
  • Highly-recognised industry-level tool.
  • Access to students was a little limited, perhaps providing access that corresponds to the certification videos would be helpful.
  • The duration of the access for students could be extended.
The tool is great to use and provides students with the much-needed hands-on experience. The online certification courses complement the use of the Semrush platform in the classroom and provide students with an advantage in the job market. The Semrush team was very helpful throughout and provided us with great support.

Our organization uses Semrush to assist us in the daily tasks and managing our clients in SEO programs. My favorite features are the reporting system that automatically sends out reports, the organic search research, and the position tracking. This system has made it easy for us because we can automatically schedule reports for the first of the month and can trust our clients are getting monthly results. Their other tools make it easier for us to reach our goal and complete their monthly SEO work. They are constantly updating and adding new features to keep up with the industry, which makes it an ideal tool for us.
  • Reporting
  • Organic research
  • Tools
  • No archiving for Projects
  • Difficult if multiple people need to log in to the same account
  • Great Features are added, but for more cost
Semrush is great for organizations looking for a tool to help them manage the daily tasks for their SEO Clients. Their projects management system is great for multiple clients. The only downside to their client management is there is no way to archive work if a client is seasonal. There are also additional add-ons for competitor research or more Google ads information, which is helpful for clients with SEM. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a good SEO tool.

It is an absolutely critical tool in our organization. We rely on it heavily and use it on a daily basis. Especially the ability for us to track positions. We also use the client portal feature, however we are not very impressed with their lead generation tool. It needs a lot of improvement we believe.

Semrush has been the principal tool in our SEO Agency Toolbox for years now. So much so that we have recently upgraded to a higher package due to our growth. The information that Semrush provides for our clients is unsurpassed, particularly the competitor analysis reports. Clients have referred to this as 'industrial espionage' and one or two have asked "is this info you are getting legal?" Semrush allows us to benchmark and record the success of our SEO Campaigns. Plus, their support is top-notch. The company is uber-accessible. Quite frankly, we could not run our business without Semrush as it gives us such a competitive advantage. Anyone claiming to be an 'SEO Expert' who does not use this software, is an amateur.

We use Semrush in a couple of different ways. First to qualify prospects by identifying what keywords are driving traffic to their websites and where there are areas of opportunity for SEO for those prospects. We also use it to research keywords, difficulty, and what features of Google are associated with that particular keyword so that we can create content that will rank on Google.
  • Keyword research: Enter any term and get all keywords and questions associated with it.
  • Historical trends: You can easily see how a site has fared over time.
  • Competitors' research: See how sites stack up against one another in the digital ecosystem.
  • So many features: It can be a little overwhelming and I know that I'm not using the tool to its fullest extent
  • Can be a little bit tricky to get out of Semrush once you're in.
  • Can only break down search traffic by country, not state.
I spend quite a bit of time in Semrush when I'm trying to diagnose whether or not a business is a good fit for our services. Prospects are always shocked to see their positioning for high volume discovery search terms, which 9 times out of 10 are pretty poor. I especially like the keyword magic tool which shows what questions are associated with the topic I'm looking into so we can identify which long-tail keywords to target.

It is used to manage the entire online presence of our sites. From SEO, to content, social media, and competitor research. I especially like how you can sort through competitor keywords and filter results by volume and difficulty. It allows you to target search phrases that others may not have thought of that still drive significant traffic. Another feature I love is the backlink analysis. You'd be surprised to find the different strategies that are used as well as opportunities for your own business. Semrush is an easy-to-use solution that allows small operators to find opportunities to build their brand and online visibility. It helps even the odds vs larger competition in your industry.
  • Backlink analysis
  • Keyword research
  • Content strategy
  • Social media management
  • More internal linking/site structure suggestions
If someone is looking to get traffic to their website Semrush is a no-brainer. Where it is less appropriate is when the user is absolutely clueless about websites or ranking and doesn't know the difference between Google and social media They don't have to be pros or even technical. They just have to understand why a website is important and the fundamentals of driving traffic to that site.

As a small digital agency, SEMRush plays a pivotal role in how we support our clients. There are very few functions of our business where we do not use SEMRush to help us do our job.

It is our go-to tool when we're onboarding a new client, researching to develop a digital/content/SEO strategy, identifying an action plan for our SEO work, reporting on our progress and more.
  • I love that they appear to be continually looking to improve their product. For example, the Site Audit adapts its checks as SEO best practice evolves. The content tools such as Topic Research, while not perfect, are improving.
  • The SEMRush reporting function is particularly strong. It's really easy to create custom and branded reports by dragging and dropping widgets.
  • They are not alone in that they are contributing research to help the industry but I believe they go beyond some of their competitors in getting out to SEO Meetups and hosting awards.
  • I'd love for them to continue to improve their content based tools. The Topic Research, Gap Analysis, and SEO Content Template tools are all great but are not quite best-in-class.
  • There would be a huge benefit if they could start to improve on their backlink offering.
  • It'd be really hard to improve on what they have already, and I'm sure they have plans in place as the knowledge is available, but I'm hoping they stay in front of the pack regarding snippet optimisations.
First and foremost SEMRush is a fantastic SEO tool. I believe it's well suited to SEOs, either in-house or agency side, small business or large enterprise. If SEO is not a focus for your business or agency, then it may not be that appropriate, despite the PPC, content, and social tools.

morphsites use Semrush every day and it's super useful for informing and supporting our SEO work for clients. We not only use Semrush in the digital marketing team, but our copywriting teams use it on a daily basis to gauge keyword volumes and related keyword topics.

When working with new clients, Semrush is very useful for finding out accurate and quick data on the strengths and weaknesses of a client's website and we are quickly able to contrast this against competitor's websites and share this info with clients in our initial meetings.

We also use Semrush to track keyword positions on an ongoing basis, so we can track and report on agreed KPI's for our client base.

Based on the figures provided by Semrush and customer insights, we can extrapolate potential ROI for Google Ad campaigns. Clients can then see potential measurable business benefits, often making it an easy sell.
  • Excellent SEO site audit tool
  • Keyword volumes & content recommendations
  • PPC keyword research
  • Domain keyword history goes back many years
  • Simple to use
  • Proactive and are always adding new tools and functionality and soliciting feedback from users
  • Extra seats can be expensive, as [an] agency with multiple team members this can be frustrating
  • Backlink data is not great, misses out a lot of backlinks (better off using a specialist backlink tool like Link research tools LRT)
  • Tracking multiple keywords, across multiple clients can be costly
We perform domain analytics reports before meeting with customers which provides valuable insights into the customer and their industry. This is often information the customer doesn't have themselves and allows us to be viewed as [a] trusted advisor by our clients.

For domain and keyword analysis and domain history, Semrush is excellent. It really helps you find and resolve key issues holding back clients' websites from ranking quickly and effectively. We also find it very useful for providing reports for our clients. The content writing help tool in Google docs is also very good for assisting our copywriters.

Many of the tools have got better and better over the years and Semrush [is] always pro-actively adding more.

The backlink tool is ok but does need some work, a lot of other tools discover many more links. We simply don't use it for backlinks. However, for all your other SEO needs Semrush is great.

Overall value for money-wise 8/10 is fair. Would recommend.

We use Semrush on a weekly basis for keyword research and to track our competitor's progress. We also track ranking progress using visibility and keyword position. The sheer power and visibility Semrtush gives you is phenomenal, it certainly gives you an advantage over competitors not using this tool. I would recommend this tool without hesitation.
  • Keyword Research
  • Progress Tracking
  • Topic research
  • Writing assistant for content optimization
  • The link building tool only gives you 1000 emails with contacts
  • Once domains are in the progress tab you have to manage them individually
  • No way to sort domains in link building tool for only ones with contact info
Semrush is well suited to all SEO efforts. It is an all-in-one platform and makes the need for another SEO tool unnecessary. The only thing you would need aside from Semrush is a dedicated link-building tool such as Postaga. The link-building tool within Semrush is great but doesn't send automated emails or personalized ones.

  • I don't like some of the pricing structure especially as it relates to the On-Page SEO Checker.
  • It could use a little more work in the keywords area.
  • The Social Content Poster could be more robust!
There are many tools in the SEO world and I had a subscription to several of them over the last year. In my opinion, this product is well suited for organizations of all sizes, large or small like a one-man band such as myself. I do not know of any scenarios where Semrush would be less than appropriate.

Semrush has been an incredible tool. It easily and effectively allows us to audit and perform SEO tasks across multiple client websites. It also is an easy reporting tool, letting you set up and automate reports for various types of clients. We also manage our clients organic social media through Semrush as well. The insights and posting abilities are a a huge help to our social media team.
  • SEO auditing
  • SEO content Ideas
  • Social Media posting
  • First comment on IG ability
  • Very limited Social Media reporting metrics
  • Very limited Google Ads reporting metrics
  • Not extremely helpful on the paid side of things (GA)
Any SEO manager needs Semrush.

We use Semrush in the marketing department for our own site and client sites. Our organization covers multiple services, but we only use it for marketing/SEO clients. It helps us perform site audits, look at competitors, plan our PPC campaigns, and evaluate site performance. It's helped us out a lot.
  • Keyword Research
  • Competitor Research
  • Dashboard changes often and isn't the most fluid.
  • Can be hard to navigate.
  • While it doesn't crash often, it crashes more than I would have thought.
It's great if you're trying to get the overall feel and take a top-down approach to a website. It's the first tool we use when starting a site audit or want to examine a competitor.

It's not that great if you want to look at your site from a developer's perspective. There are better tools out there that provide more detail and insights than Semrush does.

We use Semrush for all of our own SEO needs and we also use it as a service we provide for our clients. It helps bring organic traffic by making informed decisions. We are currently trying out the writing assistant and so far it helps out writing out blog content.
  • Good Website Audit tools
  • Easy keyword research
  • Helpful writing assistant
  • Would like a better way to save on screen, multi-keywords for doing related keyword research.
  • Writing assistant mistook our own site's post as an originality flaw on a blog we are updating. Could maybe get a domain white list for the assistant.
  • Not sure yet if the tool exist[s] in Semrush, but would like a paid keyword difficulty or any other metrics to use for advertising guidance too.
Semrush is helping us offer new services with improved quality. Understanding SEO is easy with Semrush if you already have [an] understanding of SEO. Writing out content on your own is a guessing game without Semrush. It is a great tool, especially if your website or your clients' is under performing traffic-wise. The backlinks features are also great.

Semrush is our go to SEO and SEA research tool, we use it to analyze the competition, make keyword lists.
With all the SEO tools out there I find Semrush easy to use and complete with all the functions you need (sometimes to much), to do everything around SEO for your website.

The main thing I really like is that you can make a fast list of SERP features of specific keyword, and make a short list of it for easy snippet spots in Google, we where able to win many top positions this way. :)
  • Fast list of SEP Features for easy snippet positions.
  • Spying on competitions keywords and make a quick list of them (know what you are missing!)
  • Spying on advertisings of the competition, know what works for them!
  • Pricing model can ramp up fast, they have all this small add on packs that are $$$.
  • Keyword research often shows keywords of other languages even when you filter it out.
If you look into SEO tools there are many players in the market. And 1 is not really better then the other in my opinion but does specific things better. If you look at the top players you get Semrush, Ahrefs and SERanking is getting there.

For me Semrush does a good job at competition analyses, and finding those nice snippet keywords to grab.
But if I want more in depth link building research I tempt to use Ahrefs more.
If I have many small projects, want to give my costumers position tracking and nice reports, I use SERanking (with Semrush there is a project limit and you have to break bank if you want to use white label reports....).

I work for an internet company, so understanding SEO and SEM is of extreme value to us. While our core competency and product delivery has been website design and development for nearly 20 years, we've recently made a huge push toward digital marketing for clients. As the digital strategist on the team, it's necessary for me to be able to track SEO progress, competitors, etc. This tool is only used by our digital marketing team.
  • The ability to crawl every tiny detail of a website is great. Not only that, but SEMRush breaks down problems by Errors, Warnings, and Notices. By prioritizing technical issues and content needs, it makes it very easy to know where to start optimizing a site.
  • The competitor analysis feature in SEMRush is extremely robust. In fact, we switched to SEMRush from another program specifically for how robust the competition feature is.
  • SEMRush covers a wide range of needs. If you need social media insights and a tool to schedule content, this does it. If you need comprehensive website audits, it does that too. From keyword tracking to backlink audits, this tool has everything.
  • The report builder feature is extremely helpful. It allows you to drag and drop certain features from your project and build out a report.
  • Since several areas of SEMRush are still in the Beta phase, it can be quite buggy at times. However, their customer service team is very quick to respond and resolve any bugs you find.
If you need to audit backlinks, this tool does it. If you want to analyze your keywords and assess content page by page, it does that too. Essentially, any need you run into in the digital strategy world, SEMRush has a solution. It can be time-consuming, as the learning curve is pretty steep. But it's an excellent resource.

We use Semrush at several different levels. Two departments benefit the most from it, the SEO planning department and our editors. Of course, our writers use Semrush writing assistant as well. The most important use of Semrush is as a great time saver. It helps us cut down on onboarding new employees for multiple tools and just allows us to teach them how to use this one Suite instead. It is a great time saver.
  • Saves time
  • Great Keyword Research
  • Takes feedback into consideration and changes things accordingly.
  • Their Brand monitoring tool needs work.
We started using Semrush for their Writing assistant. It's helpful, it works well, and it's very easy to use so our writers had a really easy time getting used to Semrush. Month after month we started using other functionalities and now we can't really imagine working without Semrush and still keeping up with our client base.

It's maybe not perfect for people who are looking for individual tools. If you just want a single tool, maybe it's easier to find a dedicated tool. No need for longer onboarding then.

We use Semrush across our whole organization. It offers us a quick way to do keyword research, search competitors, and review domain authority.
  • Identify keyword gaps
  • Identify useful backlink opportunities
  • CPC estimation
  • Better rank tracking
  • Too much data shown - could be more digestible
  • More customizable dashboarding
Semrush is helpful for looking up quick stats such as keyword volumes, but it may not be a large enough tool to manage full websites. If you'd like to track rankings for a set of keywords, Semrush is limited.
