I've used it mostly for keywords research to find new relevant keywords and to see which keywords our competitors running so I can make sure we are not missing anything. Also, it great tool to see competitors landing pages and creative for each keyword.
  • Competitive research
  • Creative Analysis
  • Budget planing
Cons
  • Keyword volume estimation
  • Social media Information
  • Backlink reports is not good enough competing to similar tools
It's suited to get intelligence on relevant competitors, it's less good to define search volume. You can use it to find out where your competitors spending their budget on Google but keep in mind that the search volume and other sink parameters are not 100% accurate.

We have used SEMRush in our search engine optimization and pay per click advertising projects to accomplish three goals: 1. Keyword research. SEMRush provides a powerful suite of tools to perform keyword research. 2. Competitive Analysis. SEMRush provides keyword rankings for competitor sites and estimates the traffic those keywords are sending to help assess the level of competition for a specific group of keywords and to help estimate the benefit that optimizing for those keywords will produce. 3. Reporting. SEMRush provides automated reporting tools for multiple clients.
  • Keyword research. SEMRush provides a powerful suite of tools to perform keyword research.
  • Competitive Analysis. SEMRush provides keyword rankings for competitor sites and estimates the traffic those keywords are sending to help assess the level of competition for a specific group of keywords and to help estimate the benefit that optimizing for those keywords will produce.
Cons
  • Free version is significantly limited.
  • Pricing is steep for occasional users.
Best suited for agencies or in-house digital teams that rely heavily on search ranking and traffic data to make marketing decisions. May not be the most appropriate tool for a small team who is merely curious about their stats, or who don’t have a clear search marketing strategy in place.

Used for keyword/topic research, SEO reporting, and monitoring.
  • Distilled, smartly organized action points for site health/technical SEO aspects.
  • A wide variety of tools— it can do almost everything to some degree at least.
  • Keyword Magic Tool is a great one-stop shop for keyword permutations and research.
Cons
  • Navigation controls within the product could be better.
  • Can be slow at times.
Semrush has been great for all of the following scenarios:
  • Identifying any technical development opportunities to CMS and websites to help content rank better.
  • Keyword research for a new content strategy, as well as for overhauls to key product pages,
  • Competitor/gap research on others who rank in our space, helping us to learn common or standard search terms and the SEO competitive landscape.

We use Semrush for keyword research and monitoring keyword performance. This helps us justify organic search campaigns (new website content ) and measure the effect our campaign had on improving our representation in organic search results. We also use Semrush in the sales process to show prospects all of the keywords for which their competitors are ranking but they are not. This helps them see the opportunity in terms of organic search volume and potential organic traffic/leads.
  • Tracks keyword changes on a trend line
  • Analyzes organic keyword profile for any domain
  • Measures featured snippets better than any other tool
  • Intuitively allows users to sort and segment keywords
Cons
  • The keyword that you're researching isn't always included in the data export
  • Reports are emailed to users by default (you have to opt out rather than opt in)
  • Mobile search volume seems to be incomplete or less accurate
We use Semrush at the beginning of website projects. We refer to this as our Analytics-Informed Sitemap. As part of this process, we identify existing content gaps and then propose new pages on their sitemap to close this gap. This enables us to launch a website that adds organic traffic instead of suffering a dip in organic traffic, which has become so common that it's expected.

SEMRush is a great starting tool for anybody working in the search space

SEMRush is being used to keep our company in the know about our organic search rankings, keyword performance, and page performance in the SERPs. SEMRush is specifically used by myself to get a better handle on which pieces of content are ranking for the most search terms, which pieces of content are ranking highly for said search terms, and what percentage of our traffic is coming from specific landing pages and/or search terms. It's an incredibly valuable tool for any marketer that's interested in the organic or CPC health of their website.
  • SEMRush does an excellent job of providing insights into every keyword your site ranks for, individual pages rank for, and how much traffic each of those keywords is driving
  • Keyword/competitive research is a strong point of SEMRush, from being able to analyze competitors' search positions and traffic, to finding new keywords your site can rank for, there's a myriad of possibility within SEMRush to get the upper hand on competitors.
  • The whole interface is very user-friendly, so the crossover features between SEMRush and Google's products that offer similar functionality are much easier to pick up on.
Cons
  • A very minor thing, but it's not as easy as clicking a link to view a page that ranks for a certain term. The links are always internal and point to the page analysis for a particular page. It would be nice to just click on that link to view the page, but the reasoning for the current UX makes sense.
  • It would be nice to see what percentage of the total search volume for a query ends up on your site. For example, a query with 15k searches/month might yield 10% of my business's organic traffic, but I have to calculate what that percentage equals in sessions and then find that as a percentage of the total search volume. Easy to do on a one-off scenario, but a pain to export and do formulas every time you want to do that analysis in bulk.
SEMRush is very well suited for anybody looking to do keyword research and keep an eye on their site's organic/paid health/traffic. For raw search/keyword research it is my favorite tool on the market, especially for the price. For those looking to mine backlinks and that are more focused on growing a backlink portfolio, a tool such as Ahrefs would be more appropriate as it's competitive analysis across all dimensions and it's backlink indexing is much more robust.
